My name is Jessika Smith; I am currently a senior with an associate degree in Health Science. I had to
make a tough decision to drop the nursing program due to my financial aid issues. I chose to pursue a bachelor
degree in Human Health Performance at Albany State University in Albany, Georgia. I will be graduating this
spring with a bachelor degree in Human Health Performance. My mother is a single parent with two children
and health issues. She tries her best to make ends meet. I can help myself by optioning to as many scholarships
as possible. This would help cover the outstanding amount I owe each semester even with my financial aid in
place.

I want to be considered for the Elberton/Gainesville District Laity Scholarship because of my

achievements in school, my church involvement, and my volunteer work. I have maintained a GPA of 3.75,
graduated Cum Lade in my degree program and was accepted in the nursing program Fall, 2018 and became a
Senior Resident Assistant of Village South. At Tabor’s Chapel CME Church in Ila, Georgia, I am an active
member. I participate in many activities and events on the local, district, and region level. Some of these
activities are: being an acolyte, usher, and a member of the youth/adult choir, Christian Youth Adult
Fellowship, and the (Missionary) Phyllis H. Bedford. I was elected as a Mattie E. Coleman delegate for the
Missionary Council Seventeenth and Eighteenth Quadrennial Assembly and the General Conference. Last
summer at the 2018, 6th Episcopal JAC Paine College Augusta, Georgia, I was elected the Phyllis H. Bedford
delegate to The Women's Missionary Council 19th Quadrennial Assembly in Shreveport, LA. I attended Christian
Leadership Training School at Paine College for several years. This year I volunteered as a chaperon for the
youth of my church at Christian Leadership Training School. On the district level, I have served as a hostess for
numerous missionary luncheons, and banquets; help prepare and deliver care packages for the families in need
in the community and patients in the nursing home; and helped to prepare and serve food at the homeless
shelter. My passion is helping others. My volunteer work does not stop there I have devoted my time to helping
children by volunteering at my neighborhood elementary school. I help tutor and mentor students there every
year. I also volunteer at the annual Indian Mound Festival in Macon, Georgia; and serve at various soup
kitchens in the community.

I am in need of financial assistance. I realize what has been a long-term goal for me will be a dream for
my mother. I would like to be considered for the Scholarship, because I display leadership, service to my
community and church, and academic excellence throughout my years in school and even in college. A college
education is quite expensive, but it is an investment that is certainly worthwhile. If selected for this scholarship,
I will continue to apply the same diligence to my collegiate studies as I have to this point. Doing great in my
education and servicing others is my top priority. I will continue to represent my church as well as my district
during my years in college and beyond.

Thank you for consideration,

Jessika A. Smith
To whom it may concern:

This is to recommend Jessika Smith for Elberton/Gainesville Laity Book Scholarship. Jessika was a
student in my Broadcast and Video Production (BVD) Lab Class. While enrolled in my classes she
completed the Broadcast and Video Production Pathway (currently Audio-Video Technology and
Film).

Upon completion of Broadcast and Video Production 1, 2, & 3, Jessika enthusiastically chose to
continue her concentration in the area of Audio and Video Technology. She pursued her passion by
enrolling in BVD Research and Lab classes. In addition, she was an active member of Central’s
Skills USA Career and Technical Student Organization.

Jessika Smith was a wonderful student and a terrific person. It is very evident that she leads by
example which is a very special quality. Jessika always completes her work in an often exemplary
fashion and is quick to volunteer to take on additional responsibilities.

What makes Jessika special too is her willingness to jump in and take on anything that her
classmates are involved with. During the times that she was not working on an independent project,
she was rolling up her sleeves to assist beginning students with challenges that arrive.

I whole-heartedly recommend her for the E Scholarship, and would be happy to provide additional
information to support her application if necessary.

Your favorable consideration will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Joe Finkelstein, Teacher
