CHAPTER ONE
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Student industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) was establish in
1973 to solve the problem of inadequate practical skills preparatory for
employment industries commence by graduate from tertiary institution in
Nigeria.
Participation in SIWES has become a necessary pre-condition for the
award of Diploma and Degree certificates in specific disciplines in most
institutions of learning in the country, in accordance with the education
policy of government. The SIWES is for four months, SIWES is operated by
the ITF, the coordinating agencies (NUC, NCCE, NBTE),employers of labor
and the institutions concerned (universities and polytechnics and college of
educations).Funded by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Moreover, it is to set standard of excellence and effectiveness and
after direct training of professionals, technicians. Technologies and
entrepreneurs to meet the human resources needs for rapid industrial nation
and sustainable economic development of Nigeria, relying on crop of high
motivated and competent professional staff using best of breed training
technique and modern technology. The School of Vocational Education,
Federal College of Education, Okene produced this technical handbook as a
field-took for SIWES candidates’ supervisors and stakeholders in the
programme. .
It provides the learners with invaluable consulting tools both in the
field and the classroom however emphasis in vocational technical education
without adequate actions to develop qualitative and quantitative educational
programme is chasing the wind, because of the death of textbooks for

SIWES. The school expanded the scope for the student’s guide to include
technical references in agriculture, computer science, business education,
fine and applied art, home economic and music.

WEEK 1
Orientation introduction to computer, how to photocopy and how to use a
photocopy machine, how to type with or using Microsoft word for typing a
document, using Mavis Beacon to learn typing, introduction to internet, how
to use a scanner to scan (scanning machine)
WEEK 2
How to use a laminating machine, introduction to Corel draw, source of
input and output devices, basic element on Ms word, how to edit in ms
word.
WEEK 3
Application of water mark in a document typed in Microsoft word,
how to encrypt a document I Microsoft word, how to continually save a
document using F12 in ms word, how to use a text box in ms word, how to
use word art in Microsoft word document, how to pick and drop items in
Corel draw.
WEEK 4
how to find and replace word in Microsoft word document, how to insert
page boarder in a document in ms word, how to highlight two items or
words in different place in ms word, website and web browsers (internet),
function of a web browser and list of website.
WEEK 5
Making use of a giant stapler, how to minimize a document using a mouse
and also using shortcut key, how to switch between document using shortcut
key or short strokes (switch between open documents), how to refresh a

window and also shortcut key (F5), how to open a new tab in a browser,
function of the U.P.S, (computer system).
WEEK 6
How to pimp a search page (internet browsing), how to pimp a
homepage (internet browsing), how to configure a modem (internet
browsing), making use of screen keyboard (computer operation), function of
a microprocessor.]
WEEK 7
How to backup a system (computer operation), how to auto scroll
down in an text using the mouse, functions of the functional keys (computer
operation), function and how to change the screen resolution on pc/laptop,
how to insert a screen garget
WEEK 8
Maintenance of the computer system garget, how to print on an
envelope, how to register an email, how to configure a browser, how to sleep
and also how to hibernate a system.
WEEK 9

share a network connection, what is PDF and its functions, function of adobe
flash reader.
WEEK 11
Ways or how to create a cover page, how to print and design a card, how to
sleep, shutdown, and hibernate a system with a keystroke and function key,
function of the control panel, functions of a biometric scanner and the uses,
how to scan and send scanned document in an email.
WEEK 12
The architecture of a computer, the memory and its function, the
input/output device, the hardware level, the software level, BUSES.
WEEK 13
Data processing, basic data organization method, source of data, data
capture, input method in data capture.
WEEK 14
Database administration and her functions, data table, network
database management system, computer based organization method, data
capture forms, data models.
WEEK 15
Database management introduction/practice, types of database
management system, steps to setting up a database file, database
management terms, data security and integrity, other safeguards (software
safe guard).
WEEK 16
Microsoft access (introduction), creating an access 2007 database,
how to save work done on ms access, opening access database again,

designing of certificate in Corel draw, editing of photo’s an document on
Corel draw.

4.1 RECOMMENDATION
I recommend this (SIWES) that government should try to pay for the
I.T students and also provide equipments for them to aid effective learning
and more learning experience.
4.2 CONCLUSION
Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) was organized
by federal government of Nigeria to give much experience and exposing of
higher institution in various fields of life. This programme is mainly
organized for higher institution students in much department to acquire the
students with practical music experience on the field, to prepare students
towards the possible challenges after graduation, and also to be exposed to
some equipments or instruments that may not be available in the school
which develop our practical form of learning.
