A thought from your Real Estate Professionals

Ashland offers so much more than just charm and the “high” real
estate prices that so many like to talk about. People are always
commenting that there seems to be a sense of small community
but with the culture and amenities you can find in the larger
cities. What makes Ashland such a community ? Simply put, “It’s
the people.”
There is always tremendous support from our community on
so many levels and people step up to help out, whether they
are directly affected or not. Our town supports and helps each
other, understanding that in the big picture there is a benefit
for everyone. We have many organizations throughout our
community that enhance the quality of life Ashland has become
known for so let’s remember to support these organizations.
In particular, the Ashland Family YMCA is beginning it’s annual
scholarship fundraiser. The funds raised enable many of our
youth to attend summer camps and year round programs that
they otherwise would be unable to participate in. Over the last
several years we have been active in fundraising for the YMCA
and feel strongly that it greatly benefits our community.

Movie Review—Color Me Kubrick: A True…ish Story by roguewriter
I’m Stanley Kubrick. No, John Malkovich is Stanley Kubrick, or rather he portrays Alan Conway who pretends
to be Stanley Kubrick. Successful as a confidence man, he convinces scores of people that he is indeed the
director of such classic films as Dr. Strangelove and 2001: A Space Odyssey. The humor lies in his blatant ignorance
in regards to Kubrick’s filmography. Even still, people buy his claim on Kubrick’s identity. Although he mostly uses
Kubrick’s fame to find men to bring home, he eventually sets his sights on greater scams.

The Vision by Sheryl Grunde 44 45

Ben and I had been driving around in my rusty

46 47
truck through California for over a month looking
for a nest for my pregnant belly, and somehow
Ashland felt like the landing place. I was in search
of a close community; families and close friends
to celebrate life with. I envisioned a place where
children run free and play at each others houses,
meals are shared, gatherings are informal and
frequent. The dream had potential here, but after
baby number two, I realized that a yoga teacher
married to a massage therapist could not afford
to buy a house and stay here. We were priced
out of even a “fixer upper” cottage, but I set my
intention to find a way.
I had lunch with a friend one day who had been
telling me about the co-housing development
she was a part of. It sure sounded like my vision.
In co-housing, you buy your own home, but there
are shared gardens and a common house. You
have your own kitchen, but community meals
are frequent. People are committed to sharing
resources, so you only need one lawn mower,
weed wacker, hot tub, sauna… Although
she said it was “affordable,” I knew it would be
impossible to get a mortgage in our situation,
and my family wasn’t coming through with a
big check, but the City of Ashland had approved
the plans with a stipulation that they had to
include two “low-income” houses. It felt like
divine intervention when community members
decided to switch things around and make one
of those units a three bedroom, to accommodate
our family, and we qualified for a loan through USDA Rural Development.
It’s been over a year now that we’ve been planning, meeting, and playing with our co-
housing friends as we watch the buildings go up. There are seven families with children
and four single women in the group, and they feel like family already. The vision really is
taking shape at this point. Our beautiful energy efficient neighborhood will be born in a
few short months. www.ashlandcoho.com
