Read the dialogs below

Dialog 1
Robby : Hello Anna, will you come to Rita’s house tonight?
Anna : I am afraid I can’t.
Robby : Why? Do you want to go to with your boyfriend?
Anna : No, my father is sick. I have to make sure that somebody can take him care before I go.
Robby : I am so sorry to hear that and I hope your father gets better as soon as possible.
Anna : Thank for your hope.
Robby : You’re welcome Anna.

Dialog 2
Mrs. Tary : Lina, because you are the winner of the story-telling competition in this class, you will
represent this class for the story-telling competition of our school next month.
Lina : Okay, Miss.
Mrs. Tary : Prepare your best for the competition, will you?
I hope you will win the first prize, too. Good luck.
Lina : I hope so too, Miss. I’ll do my best.

Kalimat “I hope your father gets better as soon as possible”; “I hope you will win the first prize, too”,
yang terdapat dalam dialog diatas merupakan beberapa contoh kalimat yang digunakan untuk menyatakan
ungkapan-ungkapan Hopes and Wishes, sedangkan kalimat “Thank for your hope”, “I hope so too”,
merupakan respon dari ungkapan-ungkapan Hopes and Wishes.

Activity 2.
Definition of Hopes and Wishes

 Hope: Hope is the expression of someone want something to happen or to be true, and usually have
a good reason to think that it might or the feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will
turn out for the best

 Wish: Wish is the expression of someone’s feeling that one would like to have or do something or to
see something happen; a desire, longing, or strong inclination for a specific thing

Hope and wish are the expressions about expectation that someone want something to happen.

Luis : Oh, This is a ticket to a music concert.
Jean : What concert?
Luis : “Maroon 5” concert.
Jean : Really?
Luis : Yeah. Why? You look surprise.
Jean : I am a huge fan of them. Is the ticket expensive?
Luis : Yes, it is. It is quite expensive, because this is a VIP ticket.

Jean : What a shame! I really want to watch their concert. I hope I can watch them next time.
