TEMPERATURE TESTING PROCEDURES

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Determine and test appropriate temperature for heat tolerance of
client.
This section covers the temperature testing procedures in performing
hand spa….

Procedure in Testing Paraffin Wax Temperature

Paraffin waxes are renowned for their healing and pain-relieving

properties. The wax was first used by doctors to help relieve arthritis pain
but has since become a standard in nail salon services.
“It has a low melting point, which means that it melts into a liquid at
a temperature that is not too hot to immerse onto the skin,” says Shapiro.

The following steps are to be followed when testing paraffin wax

temperature.

1. Wax is at an ideal consistency and temperature when it resembles

honey and glides easily over your skin. After heating your wax, test it
on the inside of your wrist before use.

2. Test the wax with your fingertip to make sure it's the right
temperature. If not, adjust the temperature.

3. The wax should not be uncomfortably hot on your skin.

4. If it feels too hot, leave it cool for a couple of minutes and test again
on your wrist.

5. If wax is not spreading easily and has a stringy texture, it is too

cool and will need a bit more heating time.

Heat Rash

Paraffin melts at a lower than normal temperature, meaning that the

skin can be submerged in the wax without causing burning or blistering.
However, if you have highly sensitive skin, you may experience heat rash
from a paraffin application to the skin. This rash, also called prickly heat,
looks like tiny red bumps on the face, neck, and upper torso. It can be itchy
and uncomfortable

What are Paraffin Wax Treatments?

Paraffin wax treatments are luxurious spa treatments that are

intended to moisturize and soften the skin. Paraffin wax treatments are
most often applied to the hands and feet as components of manicures and
pedicures respectively. Paraffin wax is unlike more common spa wax that is
used for hair removal on the face and body. That type of wax is much more
viscous and bonds to the skin.

Paraffin wax is a softer wax because of the paraffin oil component.

Because it is a soft wax, it melts at a lower than normal temperature. This
means that the skin can be submerged in the wax without causing burning
or blistering. Spa specialists melt blocks of paraffin wax in special vats.
During these treatments, beauticians have their clients dip their hands or
feet into the melted wax one or more times to coat the skin in a generous
layer. The hands or feet are then wrapped in plastic, or some other non-
absorbent material and left to "soak" in the layer of wax for up to half an
hour.

Paraffin wax treatments are particular popular in the winter because

they are warming and because they help moisturize dry and cracked skin.
During these treatments, the skin is bathed in warmth, which helps the
pores to open and the skin to soften. Because the treatments are meant to
be soothing, calming oils are often added to the wax in order to add a
dimension of aromatherapy to the experience. Lavender treatments are
common in posh spas.

Once the skin has been allowed to soak in the wax and the layer has
hardened, it can be pulled off in one solid piece. Because the wax is soft and
contains oil, it does not become very stiff and does not adhere to the skin.
Rather, after a paraffin wax treatment, the skin is left slick and soft.

People who experience seasonal dry skin often find these treatments
to be helpful and relaxing preventative measures. Dry, cracked heels and
knuckles can make cold weather unbearable. One or two moisturizing
paraffin wax treatments can help a great deal during snowy months. If you
are interested in purchasing paraffin wax treatments for yourself or as gifts,
get in touch with the spas in your area to see if they are offered.

How to Use a Paraffin Wax Machine

There are several at-home remedies for all types of mild health
concerns from headaches to muscle aches and joint stiffness. Paraffin wax
can be used to help treat joint stiffness, ease pain and loosen hand and foot
joints before exercise. You can use paraffin wax at home in a machine that
heats the wax in a shallow well. While there are several types of paraffin wax
machines, there are basic instructions for how to use one.

Set up

 Set the paraffin wax machine on a flat, steady surface near a wall
socket.

 Put the unmelted paraffin wax into the machine and, if it comes with
a plastic grill, place it on top. Be sure to place the designated amount
of wax into the machine, as directed in the operating instructions that
came with it. Place the lid on top.

 Plug in the machine and let sit for as long as the instructions say. The
paraffin is ready when it has completely melted.

 Add paraffin as needed to the machine. There will be an indicator on

the machine to tell you how much to add and where the limit is. Be
careful not to overfill the machine.

Using the Machine

 Wash and dry the area of the body you want to be treated. Treat small
areas such as a foot, elbow or hand. Be sure to take off any jewelry
from that area of the body.

 Test the wax with your fingertip to make sure it's the right
temperature. If not, adjust the temperature.

 Dip the selected body part into the paraffin. Repeat three to 10 times.

 Cover the body part with a plastic liner that came with the machine.
Place an insulated mitt onto the area to retain the heat of the wax.

 Let the wax sit on your selected body part for 10 to 15 minutes.
 Remove the insulated mitt from the treated body part. Dispose of the
used wax and liner.

 Refill the paraffin wax machine if necessary using Step 4 of Section 1.

Tips & Warnings

 Consult your physician before using a paraffin wax machine.

 Never apply paraffin that has been used.
 Before using the machine, test some of the paraffin wax on a small part
of your body to be sure you aren't allergic to it.
 Never apply paraffin to skin with wounds or cuts or is irritated.
 Don't touch the side of the machine because it may cause a burn.
 Don't use the machine if you have poor blood circulation.

How to Use a Paraffin Wax Machine

A paraffin bath machine contains a heat source and tank that holds paraffin
wax. The machine melts the wax and maintains it in a liquid state. When
you immerse your hand, foot or other body part in the liquid paraffin, the
wax coats the body part completely. The warm temperature from the wax
penetrates the skin, muscles and bones to provide a soothing effect that can
help relieve the pain of arthritis, bursitis, joint inflammation or muscular
strains or spasms.
Step 1

Place the paraffin bath machine on a flat and stable surface. Place the
paraffin provided with the machine into the tank of the machine. If the
machine comes with a plastic grill, place that on top of the unmelted
paraffin. Position the lid on top of the grill and the paraffin.

Step 2
Plug the machine into an electrical socket. Leave the machine plugged in for
eight to 10 hours to allow the paraffin to melt completely. Leave it plugged in
at all times to keep the paraffin liquid ready for use.

Step 3

Remove any jewelry from the body part to be treated, then wash and dry the
skin. Apply a liquid sanitizer to the body part and allow the sanitizer to dry
completely. Apply a lanolin-based lotion to make the removal of the
hardened paraffin easier.

Step 4
Touch the edge of your palm to the melted paraffin to test that the
temperature is comfortable.

Step 5

Immerse your hand, elbow or foot slowly into the paraffin. Remove the body
part and wait for several seconds to allow the paraffin to cool and harden.
Repeat this step from three to 10 times to build several layers of wax.

Step 6

Cover your hand or foot with a plastic liner and a hand mitt or boot,
available as an accessory to the paraffin bath machine. Allow the paraffin to
remain in place for 10 to 15 minutes.

Step 7
Remove the mitt or boot, then take off the plastic liner and peel the paraffin
from around the treated body part. Dispose of both the plastic liner and the
used paraffin.

Step 8

Add more new paraffin to the bath machine to bring the level of paraffin up
to the fill level mark.
Things You'll Need

 New paraffin wax

 Sanitizer

 Lanolin-based lotion

 Plastic liners

 Foot boot

Tips

 Therabath recommends removing any clothing from around the body

part to be treated to avoid staining it with wax.

Warnings

 The Homedics Paraspa Instruction Manual recommends that

individuals with diabetes not use a paraffin wax machine. Do not apply

paraffin to skin that has cuts or other open wounds, is inflamed or irritated,

or has decreased sensitivity. Stop using the paraffin bath machine if the wax

feels too hot or not hot enough. Consult with your physician concerning

your experience with the machine to determine whether continued use is

warranted.
