1. Introduction to Optical Fiber Communication (3 hrs)

Ray theory for optical fiber communication, Numerical aperture, acceptance angle

2. Electromagnetic Theory for Optical Communication (5 hrs)


Review of Maxwell's equation
Wave equation for slab and cylindrical wave guides
Modes in the planar and cylindrical wave guides
Phase and group velocity

3. Optical Fibers (6 hrs)


Introduction, types
Mode propagation in SI and GI multi-mode fibers
Mode propagation in SI and SI single-mode fibers
Characteristic properties of optical fiber: attenuation, dispersion, bend loss
Introduction to optical fiber cable, properties and application
Concepts of near-zero dispersion fibers

4. Optical Fiber Connectors and Couplers (6 hrs)


Optical connectors: Introduction, principle and types
Characteristic losses in optical connectors
Optical couplers: Introduction, principle and types
Characteristic properties of optical coupler

5. Optical Transmitter (5 hrs)


Introduction, types and requirements
Laser: Principle of lasing, types, characteristic properties and application
LED: Principle, types, characteristic properties and application

6. Optical detector Amplifier and Integrated Optics (6 hrs)


Introduction, Types and requirements
Principle of different types of optical detectors and their applications
Characteristic properties of optical detectors
Introduction to optical amplifiers, types and uses
Rare earth doped fiber amplifier: Introduction and principle
Introduction to some integrated optical devices

7. Optical Modulation (2 hrs)


Introduction and types
Analog modulation
Digital modulation

8. Optical Local Area Network (LAN) (11hrs)


Introduction to LAN and its types
Introduction to single fiber and double fiber optical LANs
Design of simple passive fiber optic LANs

Laboratories:

1. Familiarization with optical fiber laboratory, safety and precaution.


Demonstration of the concept of light propagation in optical waveguide with the
help of polymer rod and water spout
2. Determination of fiber numerical aperture and fiber attenuation
3. Plotting a power-current characteristic for LED
4. Determination of different optical fiber connector losses
5. Determination of coupling efficiency/loss from source to fiber, fiber to fiber and
fiber to photodetector
6. Digital optical transmission
