Portal frames
Portal frames are the structures which are
design with no intermediate columns , as a result
Large open areas can easily be created within the
Structure.
--portal frames are usually made from steel but
can also made from Concrete or timber.

Steel concrete timber

-portal frames are made in variety of shapes and
Sizes. These are generally used for single storey
Construction which require a large unobstructed floor
space.

ie , 1.factories

2.shopping centres

3.warehouses
Advantages:

1.speed and ease of erection.

2.site work such as drainage ,roads etc can be carried out until
Ready for erection.
3.low self weight
4.can be used for multiple purposes.
5.no weather hold up during erecting the frame
work.
6.cost effective.
7.lighter foundation than the traditional construction.
8.large spans can be achieved.
Disadvantages:

1.low fire resistance.

2.higher maintenance cost.
3.requires high skilled labours.
4.high upfront cost.
5.susceptible to corrosion and requires frequent treatment with
Special paints and other methods.
6.relatively short life span
7.on-site alteration in design can’t be done.
8.susceptible to brittle fracture when its ductility is lost.
Basic composition of portal frame structure:

1.the portal frame structure is designed in such a way that it has no

Intermediate columns.
2.A portal frame building comprises a series of transverse frames braced
Longitudinally.
3.the primary steelwork consists of columns and pitched roof
4.the light gauge secondary steelwork consists of side rails for walls and
Purlins for the roof.
5.the roof and wall cladding separate the enclosed space from the external
Environmental as well as providing thermal and acoustic insulation.

Geodesic principle:
A geodesic dome is a thin shelled arrangement
made out of triangles connected together to form true
sphere.
Space frame is the three dimensi
onal framework that makes the dome
Stabled.
The triangles are put as hexagons
And pentagons to eventually form the
dome.
Planning the construction:
Designing the dome is the first step to start with . the size and amount of triangles and their
calculations to form the dome is needed . for ex:the basic dome has equilateral 20 triangle, which then
further divided into smaller triangles to form the sphere. More triangles results bigger and more
complex domes.
Struts: these are the framework for the dome which are made up of rods normal geodesic domes
have same length of the struts where as complex once have struts of different sizes.
Material selection should be made as different materials create different kinds of dome.
Finalizing the structure:s several things should be kept in mind while putting all the pieces
together, such as, the struts and their dimensions ,their edges flattened so that they fall on the same
plane when attacked, and to make sure that flattened edges bend slightly.
The calculation differs by class of the
Dome,like 2v,3v,4v etc
Materials used in construction

There are options when building the geodesic dome ,you can
choose to cover the triangular panels with either plastic ,
wood, drywall or plastic, you get decide the material according to
the different categories geodesic domes.
But the most common material
used to build a geodesic dome is steel as thri connect the
network of the beams/struts together.
