Low Level Iron [Fe (II)]

DR 900 Analytical Procedure AP-22/900

SPECIFICATIONS
Method: Colorimetric (DR 900)
Range: 10 to 150 ppb as Fe(II)
Testing Time: 15 minutes

DESCRIPTION
Boiler systems are typically constructed of steel and
other iron-based alloys. The Fe(II) test measures the
fresh products of corrosion reactions in low oxygen
environments. The Fe(II) test does not react with
iron in the Fe(III) oxidation state or iron in the
form of oxide particles. Oxide particles are often
returned to boilers from the condensate system
and are very likely to cause deposits on the heat
transfer surfaces. The total iron test digests iron
oxide particles as well as reacting with Fe(II). The
amount of iron in the Fe(III) state and the iron

contained in oxide particles can be determined by
subtracting the Fe(II) value from the value of the
total iron test.
