Activity I: Understanding the Text

1. How can you describe the Filipinos in the digital age?

Social media has completely consumed the Filipinos to the point where the
Philippines has been dubbed “the social media capital of the world”. They are
living in an era obsessed with selfies and vanity.

2. What nature and culture do Filipinos exhibit when using social media?

Filipinos enjoy taking photographs and simply documenting their lives - what
they do, what they wear, what they eat, where they eat, and so on. They also
enjoy posting and sharing their daily activities on social media.

3. What Filipino values are represented by these nature and culture?

Filipinos are nostalgic, which is why we enjoy taking photos. We want to

capture every single moment in order to preserve it for all time. We enjoy
looking at photographs to remind us of the joys and excitement of being in that
particular moment.

Furthermore, we Filipinos are genetically predisposed to "chismis." We're

all eager to hear the most recent gossip about everyone, even strangers. We
all want to express our thoughts on these and other issues.

4. What is the author’s attitude towards these Filipino cultures and values? What
criticisms are discussed?

The author expressed her wonder and concern about the current dilemma
caused by Filipinos' growing addiction to social media. She is concerned that
our current obsession will breed a generation of conceitedness, that we
Filipinos will no longer be concerned with anything other than ourselves. She
criticizes us for getting involved in trivial issues in society, mostly involving
celebrities.

5. How can you associate yourself with the Filipino culture and values illustrated
in the text?
The article demonstrated that excessive use of social media can have
negative societal consequences. The Filipinos, particularly the youth, are so
enamored with the power of social media that they are oblivious to its negative
effects on their mental and physical health. The youth, the hope of our nation,
is slowly forgetting their identities, lack nationalism and appreciation for our own
diverse culture as they continue to follow the latest westernized trend and
aesthetic.

6. What do you think are the pros and cons of technology and social media for the
Filipino community? How can we take advantage of the digital world?

When used correctly, technology and social media can be extremely powerful tools in
this modern age. With a swipe of our fingertips, it can connect us Filipinos to the rest of
the world and can make communication easier. It has the potential to open doors to
global opportunities and learning. Social media can be a beacon of hope, creativity, and
inspiration. It can be a platform to promote and share our diverse and unique culture to
the rest of the world. In contrast, if used incorrectly and for the wrong reasons, it can
also have a negative impact on society. Oversharing can result in invasion of privacy,
identity theft and other cybercrime. Not only that, excessive use of social media and
gadget can also impact us users, physically, mentally, and socially. Internet addiction
may result in isolation, depression, anxiety, and other health-related
