SOIL: ITS TYPES AND CHARACTERISTICS

Q4_W1_Science 4

Compare and contrast the characteristics of different types of soil. S4ES- IVa-1

Introduction:
SOIL is a very important natural resource on earth made up of tiny particles of
rocks and decayed plants and animals. It also contains water and some gases found at
the uppermost layer.
There are three main types of soil namely: CLAY, LOAM and SAND. Different
types of soil have different have different physical characteristics. Clay is made up of
very fine particle of rocks. Particles are packed together tightly. It is sticky when wet
because it holds much water. Sand particles are coarse and loose. It is not good for
planting because It cannot hold water well. Loam contains right mixture of sand and
clay. It can hold enough water and oxygen which are needed for plant growth.
Layers of Soil: TOPSOIL (uppermost layer of soil); SUB – SOIL (just below the
topsoil) ; PARENT ROCK ( composed of rocks that are slowly breaking apart ;
BEDROCK ( lowest layer of soil, made up of undisturbed large boulders and gravel)
Characteristics of the Soil CLAY LOAM SAND
1. It contains minerals from dead plants and
decayed inorganic matter.
2. It has the smallest particles among all the soil
types.
3. It has the biggest particles among all the soil
types.
4. It is considered to be the perfect soil for plants.
5. It is used as growing medium for cactus plants
6. It feels sticky when wet.
7. It drains water quickly.
8. It poorly drains water.
9. It has a fine texture.
10.It is used in pottery.

describes the texture, particle size, water holding capacity, and uses of soil.

ACTIVITY C: Let’s Think it Over!

DIRECTIONS: Write TRUE if the statement is correct. If NOT, change the
underlined word to correct it.
__________1. Sand feels grainy and is made up of big particles.
__________2. Soil that has bigger particles than sand is clay.
__________3. Clay soil is heavy and holds less water.
__________4. Loam is a mixture of clay and sand.
