Activity 2. Guided by the lessons on the introduction of reading visual, it is best to note
that you can articulate the sub-topics in a manner of explanation. Now, it is your chance
to explain the following succinctly.
1. Text and Genres
Text and genres refers to the structure or the types of visual text being used. It
determines a specific purpose of how it was presented and function when seen by
audiences. Genres serves as guidelines or references when a person is evaluating,
seeing, analyzing, and negotiating a visual text. The genre of a particular visual is
identified through its content, qualities, characteristics, worldviews, and discourses that
are presented. Genres also allows audiences what to expect and helps in interpreting
what the visual text wants to portray.
2. Text and Intertext
This refers to the use of text in order to create another text. The existing texts are
used as reference and associated with each other in which the connection among these
texts are evident. Text and intertext allows audiences to analyze and identify the
relationship between them. This serves as a reference which influences the audiences
way of interpretation of visual text. This may depend on the audience prior knowledge,
background, and understanding.
3. Seeing as Reading
Having the ability to see helps us to interpret, analyze, and perceive of what is
happening around is. Seeing is also the same as with reading because through it we
are able to interpret and formulate a meaning based on its characteristics, qualities,
signs, the views that it manifests, and the connection with other visual text as well. If a
subject is interesting our mind is capable of engaging us with the visual and with that
understanding and mental processing takes place in order to interpret it.
4. New Technologies of Seeing
Nowadays, innovation and technologies in visual arts are arising. Cameras,
software, digital art tools, and imaging strategies are new technologies which improves
our ability in seeing that leads to creativity and understanding. These technologies are
helpful in developing our skills, creativity and understanding through the ability of
seeing. These may alter, modify, or improved a visual to be pleasing to the eye,
interesting, and understandable.
5. Tacit Seeing
Visual texts had the characteristics of being understood even though it is not
expressed in words. Having the ability to see makes us interpret or analyze a visual text
right away especially if it is interesting enough to capture our minds. Through various
references, views, and prior knowledge, we are able to understand what a visual text
wants to portray even if its message is not directly stated to us. Tacit seeing is the ability
to understand the things around us even though it is not expressed in words since
visual text have their own visual language which enables us to understand it.
6. Techniques of Seeing as Reading
There are different ways of how people perceive and to create a meaning based
on what they have seen selectively. Cultural and historical interventions, dispositions,
prior knowledge, and worldviews are important factors that affects the way people in
determining the things that they want to see. The techniques of seeing includes the
selection of visuals in which you are going to focus, omission and frame, arrangement,
its differences and relationship with other visual texts, focus, and the place in which the
subject occurs or was taken.
7. Seeing as Literacy
Seeing as literacy refers to the ability of a person to see and at the same time
incorporating its mental capacity in understanding and analyzing the visual text on its
surroundings. Visuals also have their own language and it was shown through symbolic
representation, signs, characteristics, qualities, etc. However, this ability depends on
various factors which affects their ability to select a visual text and their way in
understanding it. As what we have discussed earlier, seeing is also a form of reading
which is a learning approach in understanding a visual text. Seeing as literacy enables
us to communicate, engage, and understand visual texts through seeing.
8. Arresting Reality
Arresting reality refers to the freezing of time and motion in a way that we are
focusing on a particular visual texts or were drawing our attention on to something that
captures our interest. Visual tools and technologies have the ability to arrest reality
especially cameras which captures a reality or a happening in which time and motion
freezes permanently on a specific material.
9. Seeing in Context
People have different techniques on interpreting visual texts. Seeing in context is
one of the techniques of seeing as reading. Some people have different ways on
perceiving a visual text and that is where the subject or the captured moment takes
places. The context will serve as a reference or a sign so that audience would easily
understand what the visual text wants to manifest. Context plays a huge role as it give
representations, information, and knowledge that are vital in understanding visual text.
The environment affects the way we see everything and that includes the color,
ambiance, lighting, and brightness as it may lead into different interpretation.
