“Teaching is not a lucrative profession. It doesn’t guarantee financial security. It

even means investing your personal time, money, and resources. Sometimes it means
heartaches, disappointments, and pains. But opening the minds of children and
touching their hearts, give me joy, and contentment which money could no buy. There
are the moments I teach for … these are the moments I live for ”

A. Module Number /Title : Module 1: Course Overview

B. Time Frame : Three (3) hours
C. Materials : Syllabus, textbook, references, online resources

I. Overview

The C-GEC4 course is good for 3 hours lecture per week. The first week of this module begins with
the discussion of the course syllabus and overview. It aims to introduce the course coverage, course
outcomes, expectations and class rules, the course requirement, how the evaluation of performance shall
be done, the grading system and references and videos for further understanding and clarification of the
course of study and to guide you in synthesizing/ summarizing the concepts learned; describing your
realizations/ new discoveries about yourself as you went through this module;identifying the soft skills/
life skills that you may need to be a well-rounded professionals in your chosen field of endeavor.

II. Desired Learning Outcomes

At the end of this module, the learner should be able to:

(1) Read and understand thoroughly the information provided about the Course (C-GEC4)
(2) Challenge their selves to change their negative outlook in Mathematics;
(3) Accomplish the first activity for this section.

III. Content / Discussion / Learning Resources / Links

This section of Module 1 intends to introduce you to the Course C-GEC4. This will also serve as your
copy of the Syllabus of the Course. It is expected that you read through and do the activity for this section.

I. Course Code : C-GEC4

II. Course Title : MATHEMATICS IN THE MODERN WORLD
III. Pre-requisite(s) / Co-requisite(s) : None
IV. No. of Credit Units : 3 units Lecture
V. Required No. of Hours : 54 hours lecture
VI. Course Description :
This is a course deals with nature of Mathematics, appreciation of its practical, intellectual
and aesthetic dimensions, and application of mathematical tools in daily life. The course begins with
an introduction to the nature of mathematics as an exploration of patterns and as application of
inductive and deductive reasoning. By exploring these topics, students are encouraged to go beyond
the typical understanding of mathematics as merely a set of formulas but as a source of aesthetics
in patterns of nature and a rich language in itself governed by logic and reasoning. It emphasizes
how concepts and formulas are seen and used in the field of Engineering, Architecture and
Information technology. The course then proceeds in several ways in which mathematics provides
a tool for understanding and dealing with various aspects of present-day living since engineers and
architects are very strict with measurements and dimensions while IT focuses more on
understanding codes used in data transmission and security, and dividing limited resources fairly.
These aspects will provide opportunities as a way of knowing, and test the student’s understanding
and capacity.

VII. Course Outcomes :

Expected accomplishments after the completion of the Course (C-GEC4)

Important: For an easier understanding of this section, the following operational definition of terms is to
be read first:

 Outcomes. These are the expected results after going through the learning process that are
manifested in measurable forms, classified based on the domains (areas) of learning: cognitive,
affective and psychomotor.

 Cognitive outcomes. These are the expected accomplishments by the students that focus on the
use of thinking processes to produce required outputs or manifest progress. [Associated with
BIASA/ Scientia].

 Affective outcomes. These comprise the feeling aspect of learning in which values expected to
be applied are manifested by the students as they perform the activities. [Associated with
MAGANACA/ Virtus].

 Psychomotor outcomes. These are those that require the actual doing of activities with the use
of physical movements and application of skills. [Associated with BIASA/ Scientia].

At the end of the semester, students enrolled in C-GEC4 should have completed the accomplishment of
the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor outcomes as indicated.
A. Cognitive Outcomes (Scientia)

1. Discuss and argue about the nature of Mathematics; what it is, how it is expressed,
represented and used.

2. Use different types of reasoning to justify elements and arguments made about mathematics
and mathematical concepts.

3. Summarize gathered data and present them in tabular and graphical form.

4. Evaluate the given data with precision and accuracy.

5. Explain in detailed the language of Mathematics and the symbols used.

B. Affective Outcomes (Virtus)

Displayed proper self-management, trustworthiness, and social responsibility in performing
all assigned activities as indicated in their prompt submission of quality and relevant outputs.

1. Recognize the importance of Mathematics by applying it in daily life.

2. Affirm honesty and integrity in the application of Mathematics to various human endeavor.

3. Discern to utilize only the valid, reliable, credible and ethical procedures in assessment of
student learning.

4. Recognize the importance of using accurate and authentic information by means of using
statistics and research.

5. Develop critical thinking and sound judgment in solving problems to augment one’s
analytical ability and to help the students realize the importance of knowing the correct
facts to come up with the right decisions.

B. Psychomotor Outcomes (Communitas)

Submitted promptly all requirements/ outputs with qualities that meet the set course standards.

1. Use variety of statistical tools to process and manage numerical data.

2. Analyze codes and coding schemes used for identification, privacy and security purposes.

3. Draw inferences or generalizations about any given information based on the observations.

4. Use technical application (Geo-Gebra) in graphing linear inequalities and in finding the
feasibility region in the Cartesian Plane

5. Perform some exercises with speed and accuracy.

IX . Course Requirements

 Passing all Major Examinations: Prelims, Midterms & Finals

 Passing at least 60% of the Online Quizzes, Online Assignments, Online Activities, Online
Assessments

 Portfolio (Collation of the Assignments, and other Activities on the Subject)

 Online Attendance

 Active participation in the on-line/ synchronous activities.

 Participating actively in class interactions and group sharing by reciting at least once per
meeting

 Performing at least 90% of the conducted performance-based evaluation in the course as

indicated in this syllabus with an average grade of at least 80% per period.

 Incurring not more than five (5) absences unless duly excused.

 Submitting required outputs in specific topics

X .Expectations and Class Rules (founded on Self-Regulation)

The mode of learning which is mostly home-based is anchored on “self-regulation”—which means

that you, as student, are trusted with the responsibility of accomplishing the tasks required honestly, even
with lesser supervision from your Teacher. As a future colleague of your teachers then and now, you are
trained to make self-management and self-control your way of life. This Module and the rest of the learning
materials that would be shared to you as the UA School of Education’s means of providing you quality
education during this non-meeting-in-person time, are meant to promote the development of such virtues
in you. Expectedly, you are to go through the lessons sequentially, undertake the accompanying
requirements, and to do your best to submit tasks on time. Hence, it is strongly advised that you adhere to
the time allotted per section of the module to avoid unnecessary delay and backlogs.

Going along with self-management is the practice of intellectual honesty and honor system in
fulfilling tasks required in C-GEC4, in particular, and in all other courses, in general. Intellectual honesty is
best manifested in acknowledging accurately the sources of the information that you would cite in your
written works.

Meanwhile, the honor system is about living up to one’s integrity and dignity as a person and as a
Christian. Concretely, it can be manifested by doing all tasks competently and honestly even without
somebody checking on you. Consultation with your classmates to answer examination questions, for
example, is one violation of the honor system.

The same virtues are expected of you when you do online activities.
