Published April 2021

Polypropylene (PP) has the second-largest market for commodity thermoplastic resins in
the world after PE, and PP homopolymer is the most consumed single-grade plastic.
Over the years, polypropylene resin has gained popularity in all spheres of day-to-day
usage and niche applications. A perfect combination of light weight, excellent chemical
resistance, relatively high rigidity, and high cost-competitiveness make it a preferred
choice to cater to multiple requirements. With new technology and catalyst
advancements, and its ability to blend with other chemicals to further refine its
properties, PP is successfully replacing other nonpolymer materials such as paper,
metals, and wood in conventional applications.
The following pie chart shows world consumption of polypropylene resins by region for
2020:

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has created short-term demand destruction in some PP
resin applications. With the shift in consumer behavior, coupled with the economic
fallout, PP end-use segments such as injection molding faced headwinds, while other
applications such as fiber and films flourished because of dramatically increased
demand for face masks and medical wearable devices. Extrusion applications, which
represented more than half of total PP consumption in 2020, saw an increase in demand
from 2019. At the same time, demand in molding applications, which are primarily used
in the automotive industry and other durable goods and are directly impacted by the
discretional income of consumers, fell from the previous year.
