ACTIVITY 1

1. What is the difference between the historic Rizal and symbolic Rizal?
The difference between the historic Rizal and the Symbolic Rizal is that the historic Rizal is the history we all
know where in Rizal living out his life and being killed at Luneta and that because of his execution, Filipinos
started a revolution to overthrow the Spanish colonizers, and the symbolic Rizal is the one we use to show
what a Filipinos and what a hero is thus making him a symbol of hope for us Filipinos.
2. What is a text? A sign? A symbol?
Text - In literature, a text is any object that can be read, whether this object is a work of literature, a street
sign, an arrangement of buildings on a city block, or styles of clothing. It is a coherent set of signs that
transmits some kind of informative message.
Sign - a sign is anything that communicates a meaning that is not the sign itself to the interpreter of the sign.
The meaning can be intentional such as a word uttered with specific meaning, or unintentional, such as a
symptom is a sign of a particular medical condition.
Symbol -are often characters, settings, images, or other motifs that stand in for bigger ideas. Authors often use
symbols or symbolism to give their work more meaning and to make a story be about more than the events it
describes.
3. What instances in the past show that Rizal’s image was manipulated by people?
An instance that shows Rizal’s image was manipulated is where Andres Bonifacio addressed Rizal as the
honorary president of the secret society, by often, leaving a picture of Rizal hanging during the meetings of
the Katipunan.

STUDENT’S JOURNAL

Reflect on the concepts of text. It can be deduced using the definition of text that it is impossible to establish a
single meaning since all things viewed as text are open to many interpretations. Applying this in the study of history,
the past may be considered a text, especially when it has been put into writing. Is it really impossible to come up with
a single historic fact?

I think it is impossible to have a single historical fact because there are many theories of fact in the history of
the past, the elders from the past have many stories about the past of their generation. As students today it is inevitable
that we study the history of our own country, especially how lives were in the past and how it changed. It can be
inferred using the meaning of the text that it is impossible to establish a single meaning because all things viewed as
text are open to many interpretations. Applying this to the study of History, the past can think of many texts to
interpret facts. Just like the book made by Rizal so that he could boldly reveal the truth about the evil deeds of the
Spaniards in the Philippines in the text that he made, it has meaning and it is also one of the ways to defend the
Filipinos in the past from the oppression of the Spaniards. Many text facts are included in our history in the past that
included in the textbooks, like by preserving each information in the documents, so that many of our professionals are
study about it and in education, the works, of writings and journal of Rizal are always included to study in our
education and they abide it by the law of our government.

ACTIVITY 3

1. How can History contribute to the process of nation-building?

History education has often been associated with the inculcation of citizenship values, especially in the
forging of national identity. In instilling a sense of pride in the common past, the teaching of a nation's history
contributes to the creation and strengthening of nationalism and national identity.
2. How can the study of life, works, and writings of Jose P. Rizal contribute to the process of nation-building?
It is important to study the life of Jose Rizal because of his input towards the independence of Philippines. He
chose to fight for his country through knowledge and the power of letters. By studying the lives of heroes such
as Rizal, we are supposed to become more aware of the ideals that our country is founded upon.
3. What are the crucial infinitives in life according to Gemino Abad?
Amidst all of these, the faculty should inspire the students that that they can be like Rizal who participated in
the social and political processes through what University Professor Emeritus Gemino Abad referred to as the
crucial infinitives in life which are “to read, to think, to write”.
STUDENT’S JOURNAL: Reflect on Rizal’s role as a symbol of nation-building. As student, how can you become a
herald of nationalism?

He served as a model of nationalism, Filipino's strength, activism, and many more, that truly inspire Filipino

countrymen - most especially the youth. With these, I think as a student, I can contribute to the country by

internalizing the spirit of nationalism in my heart, in everything that I do. As a student, I have to be a good role model

to inspire our fellow Filipino to study the life, works, and writing of Rizal it must be well established in every

Filipino’s soul. Lessons about his life his education, lovers, past time, etc. are all useless if not applied in real life.

Rizal is a hero for us for serving and protecting our history for writing about the past and how his nationalism on those

people who make Filipinos down. We must learn to love our nationality and talk about how are we educated about

history. Because Rizal fought hard to educate himself and protect our nationality. As a student who is standing now as

a future educator I do believe because of education, we can educate our future students about being strong and how to

be a good role model for our nationality we must be proud and stand for ourselves to protect and love our nationality

and country even there are struggles we must go with the flow for our future to be good and to be better.
