It's go time for the Far East's most
formidable fusion reactor!!
China's 'artificial sun' fusion reactor which is
now a days in news for setting a world
record….
Introduction:
China’s Experimental Advanced
Superconducting Tokamak (EAST),
which mimics the energy
generation process of the sun, set a
new record after it ran at 216
million degrees Fahrenheit (120
million degrees Celsius) for 101
seconds, according to state media.
For another 20 seconds, the
“artificial sun” also achieved a
peak temperature of 288 million
degrees Fahrenheit (160 million
degrees Celsius), which is over ten
times hotter than the sun.
So, What is ‘Artificial What is Tokamak?

Why Artificial Sun?
The next decades are crucially important to putting
the world on a path of reduced greenhouse gas
emissions.

By the end of the century, demand for energy will

have tripled under the combined pressure of
population growth, increased urbanization and
expanding access to electricity in developing countries.

The fossil fuels that shaped 19th and 20th

century civilization can only be relied on at
the cost of greenhouse gases and pollution. A
new large-scale, sustainable, and carbon-
free form of energy is urgently needed.
How Artificial Sun Works….?
It is based on the Nuclear Fusion Process
that is carried out by the Sun and the Stars.
-
For nuclear fusion to occur, tremendous
heat and pressure are applied on hydrogen
atoms so that they fuse together.
-
The nuclei of deuterium and tritium - both
found in hydrogen - are made to fuse
together to create a helium nucleus, a
- neutron along with a whole lot of energy.

The gaseous hydrogen fuel is heated to

Temp. of over 150 million degrees Celsius
so that it forms a hot plasma (electrically
- charged gas) of subatomic particles.

With the help of a strong magnetic field,

the plasma is kept away from the walls of
the reactor to ensure it does not cool down
& lose its potential to generate large
amounts of energy.
What is the purpose
of Artificial Sun?

The purpose of the artificial sun is to

. replicate the process of nuclear fusion, which is the
. same reaction that powers the sun.

This is part of the International Thermonuclear

Experimental Reactor(ITER) facility, which will become the
world’s largest nuclear fusion reactor when it becomes
operational in 2035.

The ITER Members include China, the European Union,

. India, Japan, Korea, Russia and the United States.
. International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor
. (ITER).
What Current Energy lacks?
The Sun in our galaxy produces energy through a
nuclear fusion reaction. During this process, part
of the mass of the hydrogen atoms becomes
energy. Nuclear Fusion process used in sun can
produce very high levels of energy without
generating large quantities of nuclear waste. But
the energy we use today is obtained in the form
of fission in which energy is produced by dividing
the nucleus of a heavy atom into two or more
nuclei of lighter atoms. Fission is easier to
achieve but it generates a lot of nuclear waste
which is the major problem with the today's
energy which we use.
Advantages of Fusion over other sources:
✓Abundant Energy
✓Sustainability
✓No CO₂
✓No long-lived radioactive waste
✓Limited risk of proliferation
✓No risk of meltdown
✓Less Cost
