“END VIRGINITY TESTING” and the “END OF FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION”

I agree with the movement of the World Health Organization to call out a stop to “virginity
testing” and “female genitalia mutilation”. These actions scream immorality and lack of respect for
women’s rights. WHO has claimed that virginity testing, also called “two-finger testing” is unscientific,
harmful, and a violation of women’s and girl’s rights. Also, according to WHO, healthcare providers need
to know that female genitalia mutilation is a violation of human rights and must never be performed,
not even by a healthcare provider.

In our today’s society, where everyone could easily access information to everything, do we still
need to tolerate these actions? In just a click, we could justify that there is no such thing as “virginity
testing” that could define a woman’s morality and dignity. Also, the rationale claimed by people who
practices “female genitalia mutilation” can be easily argued with, and there are other solutions to
problems stated as to why they practice such a thing. As members of this society and future healthcare
providers, we should stand with the WHO campaign to put an end to virginity testing, female genitalia
mutilation, and other immoral and unethical acts done to women/girls. Let us be one with protecting
women’s rights and make our world a better place for every one of us.
