Week 2
UNIT I:
LESSON 1

CONSUMER HEALTH
CONSUMER HEALTH – refers to the decisions you
make about the purchase of product and use of health
information and services that will have direct effect on
your health. This is also about developing person’s ability
to evaluate health information, products and services
wisely and effectively.
We are all consumers. In order for us to improve and
maintain our health we acquire health information,
purchase health products and avail health services.

REPUBLIC ACT NO. 7394 or the CONSUMER ACT of the Philippines came into effect on July 15, 1992.
This has three objectives (Galvez Tan, et.al., 2009)
1. Protect the interest of the consumer
2. Promote his/her general welfare
3. Establish standards of conduct for business and industry.
Eight Basic Rights of a Consumer
1. Right to choose 5. Right to representation
2. Right to basic needs 6. Right to health environment
3. Right to information 7. Right to safety
4. Right to redress 8. Right to Consumer

HEALTH INFORMATION
 Plays a big role in the life of individuals because it may alter the health conditions of a person.
 It also refers to the data and facts about health products and services you can get from media and people
including professionals and agencies.
 Any concept, step, or advice that various sources give to aid the health status of an individual.

People acquire health information and products from various sources like people, media, and technology. It
is important to identify the reliability of these sources. Licensed professionals who took up specialized and
intensive studies in the field is one of the reliable sources of health information and products. Licensed
professionals are the ones who have qualified educational background and can give scientific explanation to
validate information. Another reliable health information comes from health books, and accredited online sources.

Types of information depends on the following;


1. Diseases 6. Eating disorder 10. Depression/Mental Illness
2. Sexual health 7. Acne/skin care 11. Violence
3. Weight loss/gain 8. Local clinics 12. Smoking
4. Drugs and alcohol 9. Sexual assault
TAKE TIME TO REFLECT!!!
One of the reasons why there are misleading health information is due to lack of knowledge by
people concerned. There are also some instances that people care less about the welfare of others and care
about their own.

LESSON 2
HEALTH PRODUCTS
Products may purchase from various places like supermarkets, pharmacies, and hospitals.
 It is defined as those substances which gives energy or makes the person healthy.
 Health products can also be foods, medicines (vitamins, minerals and herbal medicines) homeopathic
preparations, probiotics and even some traditional medicines are also prescribed by doctor or any
equivalent physician.

Examples of Health Products


Foods marketed as health foods is actually part of one or more
categories such as;
1. Natural foods – these are foods that are not processed and
whose ingredients are all natural products.
2. Organic foods – produced by methods that comply with the
FOOD standards organic farming. Organic products may restrict
the use of a certain pesticides and fertilizers in the farming
methods used to produce such product.
3. Whole foods – these are plant foods that are unprocessed and
unrefined or processed and refined as little as possible. (e.g.
whole grains, tubers)
4. Vegetarian foods – food that meets vegetarian standards by not including meat and animal tissue products.
5. Dietary supplements- this is intended to supplement the diet when taken by mouth as a pill, capsule, tablet
or liquid. It provides nutrients either extracted from sources or synthetic.

Cosmetic product is any substance or mixture intended to


be placed in contact with the various external parts of
human body. Cosmetics are part a part of everyday life for
both men and women. We need to seek out beauty COSMETICS
products that are formulated from healthy and nontoxic
ingredients.
MEDICINE is a field of health and healing. It is a rug used
to diagnose, cure, treat or prevent disease.

Medicines often come in some of the following preparations:


1. LIQUID
2. TABLET
3. CAPSULES
4. TOPICAL MEDICINES
5. SUPPOSITORIES
6. DROPS
7. INHALERS
8. INJECTIONS
9. IMPLANTS OR PATCHES
10. VACCINES

In- vitro diagnostic products (IVD's) are


those reagents, instruments, and systems
intended for use in diagnosis of disease or
other conditions, including a determination of
the state of health, in order to cure, mitigate,
treat, or prevent disease or its sequelae

What is the importance of health products?

Medicines and health products are important for addressing health problems and improve
quality of lives. They form an indispensable component of health systems in the prevention,
diagnosis and treatment of disease and in alleviating disability and functional deficiency.
