CASE SCENARIO:
Marco, 65-year-old male, rushed to the Emergency Department of FUMC after complaining difficulty of
breathing and shortness of breath. He is currently diagnosed with Renal Failure and is undergoing
dialysis sessions twice a week. The incident happened after the patient attended a birthday party and
have consumed more than the allowed fluid per day for his condition.
• +2 bipedal edema
• Chest X-ray: hazy opacities on both lungs consistent with pulmonary edema
• Blood tests: Serum Creatinine 3 mg/dL, BUN 8 mg/dL, Hematocrit 29%, RBC 3.5 cell/mcL,
Hemoglobin 9 mg/dL, WBC 6000/mcL, Serum Sodium 133 mEq/L, Serum Potassium 5.6 mEq/L.
The doctor ordered furosemide (Lasix) 40 mg TIV STAT after insertion of Foley-catheter. Increased urine
output was observed after the diuretic infusion and the patient was endorsed to the hemodialysis unit for
STAT dialysis. Captopril 6.25 mg tab BID was ordered and a strict fluid restriction and mild sodium
restriction. Neuro-vital signs check every 4 hours, strict input and output monitoring every hour, and daily

• Based on the given case scenario, Create a visual presentation (Power point) with the following
contents:
o Pathophysiology
o Describe the importance of diagnostic and laboratory test in the given scenario.
o Nursing care plan (2 priority actual diagnoses and 1 potential/risk nursing diagnosis)
o Drug study in the following format (6 columns)
▪ Generic name, brand name, classification, dosage, frequency, and route
▪ Mechanism of action
▪ Indications and drug rationale (why the drug is being given to patient)
▪ Contraindication
▪ Common side effects
▪ Nursing considerations while taking the drug.
o In 1 slide, discuss the importance of monitoring the neuro-vital signs, input and output,
and daily weight of the patient.
o In 1 slide, discuss the appropriate diet for the patient and give examples.
