The Effects of Being Monolingual
People who are able to speak only one language are at a disadvantage to bilinguals in
many areas. Monolingualism has some negative effects. Being monolingual may cause some
problems in job opportunities and it causes insecurity and difficulties in the interaction with other
cultures.
If you are someone who can speak only your mother tongue, probably you won’t be able
to find a job so easily. Every employer prefers to have bilingual or multilingual staff. Because, in
this century, language is more important than anything else when it comes to businesses.
Especially if you are in a country which has a lot of tourist interaction, it is almost impossible to
find a job with only one language. Moreover, it is impossible to find a job in international
companies. So, if you are monolingual, you cannot get the job that you want to have. You cannot
have a good career in a proper company unless you are bilingual or multilingual. So, the lack of
job opportunities is one of the negative effects that monolingualism has.
The second reason why monolingual people are at disadvantage is that the difficulty in
interacting with other cultures. What I mean by that is, you cannot interact with foreign people
from other cultures unless you know the language. Assume that you meet a group of foreign
people while traveling. You cannot communicate and interact with them because you don’t know
their language. That’s why you need to be able to speak another language than your native
language. Especially if you are traveling to other countries with different cultures, you are at
disadvantage to bilinguals. So, being monolingual makes it difficult to interact with foreign
people.
Another effect of being monolingual is that it may create insecurity. If you are abroad,
you feel insecure since you don’t know the language. It makes you feel uncomfortable and
causes asociality. Assume that you are in a place with a group of foreign people. Since you
cannot speak their language, you won’t be able to communicate with them. As a consequence of
this, you will start to feel insecure. This situation gets worse if your mother tongue isn’t English.
Because most of the population knows English. But only English is not enough either. That’s
why being monolingual makes you feel insecure.
Consequently, being monolingual has negative effects such as insecurity, difficulty in
interaction, and finding a job. To find a good job, interact with people, and feel confident you
need to learn at least one new language. Being monolingual will not bring you these.
