STEM Classes

Junior Forms (S.1 – S.3): Design and Technology, and Computing

Senior Forms (S.4 – S.6): Technology and Living, and Information

and Communication Technology
Recently, it has been found that Hong Chi students can self-learn by
watching and following YouTube videos.

7
Mission of the Service Project
Self-learning: Practice, Learning, and Teaching
through
i. Forming a team with your classmates
ii. Preparing for the Service
iii. Interacting with your groupmates and service recipients
iv. Overcoming challenges

8
Challenges of the Teaching Team
The teaching team has to overcome the following challenges
due to the COVID-19
• Safety concern of service recipients, students and
colleagues
• Arrangement of distance teaching/learning
• Distribution of materials
• Unexpected change of schedule

9
Theme of the Service Project
“One Person, One Flower” One Group, One Plant

10
dianthus chinensis 石竹

11
One Group, One Plant
• Use planting to deliver STEM concept and promote self-learning
• Science:
Basic elements for planting
The effects of weather, insects, water, and nutrition
• Technology:
Techniques and devices used in planting
• Engineering:
Development of methods and design for planting with consideration of ‘science’
factors
• Mathematics:
Calculation, measurement, control, analysis, and prediction, e.g. calendar for
planting.

12
One Group, One Plant
• Practice self-learning
• Set a successful “self-learning” example for Hong Chi
students
• Develop their self-learning habit

13
Activities and Deliverables
• Each group grows at least one plant (we shall make it for you)
• Each student develops one set of self-learning package (one of the four
standard topics) including a DIY project for Hong Chi Students
• Each group and each student prepare the Service Proposal
• Identify Hong Chi students’ learning hurdles and help them to overcome these
hurdles
• Strengthen Hong Chi and PolyU students’ self-learning ability and self-
confidence

14
The Four Topics
1. Closing a Möbius loop 2. Water cycle for plants

Water is
vital for
3. Capillary action all 4. Light reflection in water

plants
