WHAT I KNOW
DAY 1

Let us see how much you already know about visualizes

multiplication of fractions using models, multiplying fractions by whole
numbers and multiplies mentally proper fractions with denominators up to
10. Solve and analyze each problem. If you are through, check your answers
in the Answer Key Sections so you could be able to assess where you got
wrong.

1
1. 3 x 2

3
2. 2 x 4

2
3. 4 x 3

1
4. 3 x 1 2

5. 1 x 2
5 3

WHAT’S IN?
In multiplying fractions, we first must know where our numerator and
denominator are. Then how to multiply whole numbers. Let us first review.
Looking at the illustration, how can you write this in a fraction form?

3
3
We read this as (three fourths). It is divided into four and there are
4
three parts shaded. The upper number is the NUMERATOR, and the lower
number is the DENOMINATOR.

Let us go beyond the illustration. What if we have this problem, what is

1 3
of ? What is the number sentence?
3 4
Study the illustration below.

3
First, let’s divide this into 4 to show
4

3
We already have illustration above wherein we can see 3 shaded part from
4
the whole that is divided by 4 parts.

1
From this illustration, let’s divide again this horizontally that will show inside
3
the thick border

1
The portion with mark X is the portion that shows
3

4

Then count the parts with shaded part and with mark X. Therefore there
𝟑
are
𝟏𝟐

SOLUTION:

1 3 1𝑥3 𝟑
X = =
3 4 3𝑥4 𝟏𝟐
3
The next step is to simplify by getting the GCF of 3 and 12. The
12
3 3 1
greatest common factor (GCF) is 3. So, ÷ =
12 3 4
SELF-CHECK: Give the product of the following fractions mentally. DAY 2

2. X = _______
4 9
2 1
3. X = _______

WHAT’S NEW?
Amidst the upbringing of technology into this modern world, a lot has
been changed. It is true to say that many things that are to be done have been
easier and convenient. That includes quest with regards to the world of
Mathematics. With this, computations can be done virtually and use of
gadgets can be of great help. But we should remember that not all the time
we are to have this. Still in school, we need to know how to manually compute
for us to find the answers to the problems asked. Therefore, our skills can be
further enhanced, and we can be ready also in times where technological
measures are unavailable.

In this present time, we can use calculator to solve problems. In

addition, there are software and programs in our computers that can do
computations as well. An example of this would be the Microsoft Excel, etc.
But then again, it is important that we also have knowledge to do it in our
own pace, manually.

WHAT’S IN IT?
Multiplying fractions is just like multiplying whole numbers.
Remember the following steps to multiply fractions:

1. To multiply a whole number by a mixed number or a fraction, write

the whole number as a fraction with 1 as the denominator. Then,
cancel the numerators and denominators with common factors.
Next, multiply the remaining numerators and denominators. Lastly,
express the answer in lowest term.
2. To multiply mixed numbers, change the mixed numbers into
improper fractions.
3. To find the product of two or more fractions, divide or cancel out the
numbers with common factors, then multiply the remaining
numbers. Simplify the answer.

Example No. 1:
2
In the office with 24 employees, are females. How much of the population
3
are females?
2 24 x 2 48
24 x = = or 16
3 3 3
There are 16 females in the office with 24 employees.

6
Example No. 2:
There are 36 pupils in Mr. Steve’s class. One day, one sixth of the learners
were excused to undergo training. How many were left in the classroom ?
5 36 x 5 180
36 x = = or 30
6 6 6
OR
1 36 x 1 36
36 x = = or 6
6 6 6
36 minus 6 = 30

There are 30 students who were left in the classroom or have not
undergone training.

WHAT’S MORE?
DAY 3
1. The toddler weighed 25 kg. last year as per the nutritionist in the
1
barangay. This year, as per recent data, he has gained more. How
5
many kilograms did the toddler increase in weight?

2. There were 40 medals in a game which were gold, silver and bronze.
1 2
Out of the forty medals, of these were the gold ones. were the
4 4
silver ones. The rest were the bronze ones. How many medals were
bronze?
1
3. Pedro can paint 5 square meters per hour. At the same rate, how
2
1
many square meters can he paint in 1 hours?
2

1 1
4. Mila received slice of a hotcake from her friend. She gave of this to
2 4
her sister. What part of the hotcake did Mila share to her sister?

7
5. Kyle owns 330 square meters of strawberry field land. She grows
1
beans on of the land. On how many square meters of land does Kyle
3
grow beans?
