Hagia Sophia.

It is one of the main tourist attractions of Turkey and as well as the most iconic
structure of Istanbul. It has millions of visitors per year and is a must visit destination of Istanbul if
one visits Istanbul.

Many of us might be unaware of the real story about Hagia Sophia. Originally constructed during the
reign of Byzantine emperor Justinian I in 537 AD in the then called city of Constantinople (now
known as Istanbul) it was one of the magnificent structures of that time both in marvellous design
and unique architecture. It originally served as an Eastern Orthodox Cathedral and a seat of the
Orthodox patriarch of Constantinople. It continued to be a church until 1453. During this course, the
dome of the church cracked and collapsed several times due to earthquakes but was repaired and
restored shortly each time.

In 1453 when Constantinople fell into the hands of Ottoman army, the then Ottoman Emperor
Mehmet II ordered to capture Hagia Sophia and later transformed it into a mosque in the same year.
It was during the Ottoman rule only that the four minarets were added to the mosque by various
emperors during the course of time. It served as a mosque until 1935.

In 1923 Turkey became a republic and the Ottoman empire had already been dissolved in 1920. In
1935 the first president of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal converted Hagia Sophia from a mosque into a
museum.

Till date it is a museum and most importantly an UNESCO World Heritage Site and is open to the
tourist and the common people.
