Business Statistics (PGDM – BKFS)

Assignment Guidelines and Format

Objective

The assignment included in the Business Statistics course is a project designed to evaluate the
application of the classroom learning into practice. We are living in a data-driven world and our
decision making is based on some or other statistical analysis. The most successful managers and
decision makers understand the information and know how to use it effectively. In this project,
students are expected to apply the concepts learned in the classroom to the real-life situation and
present it in a detailed managerial report.

Scope of project report: - Sampling Techniques & Sampling Distributions, Interval estimates for
population mean and proportion, Normal with variance known and
unknown, Confidence interval estimation, Hypothesis testing for single
population proportion and mean (Variance known and unknown),
Inference about the difference between two population means
(Variance known and unknown; Matched sample), Test for
Independence (Chi-square test - one sample, F test - two samples, Z
test for large sample).

Brief Explanation

This is a group project. Each group should choose one online or offline, real-life, industry dataset
related to finance. The dataset may be for a single organization or of an entire industry. The dataset
must contain an adequate number of observations (elements) required for the analysis. There
should be one paragraph justification for the size of the dataset.

Having chosen the dataset, the group must use one or more of the analytical tools given in the scope
statement above. The results and the insights obtained must have decision-making utility. Concise
reports should be then prepared in the format given later in this document.

Students are encouraged to integrate the managerial concepts they have learnt in the Term 1, in
specific those related to the finance area. The idea is to extract insights needed for business
decision making from raw finance data using the statistical tools learnt in the course.

Please read the following instructions carefully and follow them meticulously while writing the
project report.

 The evaluation weightage for the project is 20%.

 There will be an interim report. This report should contain up to Section 2 – Methodology
(see format below). The interim report needs to be submitted by 10 AM on the day of
session 15 of the course as per the PGP timetable.
 The title, and the first two sections may be revised for the final report based on the feedback
given for the interim report.
 Plagiarism of any kind and to any extent would attract penalties. The assessment would be
‘zero’, with no further opportunity to improve
 Reports should be prepared in MS-word. The file name should be “Group name_2020” for
example “AA_2020”.
 All the data used for writing report should be submitted in an MS-Excel file along with the
file. The naming conventions for the excel sheet are same as of project report.
 The deadline for the report is 10.00 pm on the day of session 25 of the course, as per the
PGP timetable
 The evaluation of the project will be communicated before session 30.
 Please adhere to the deadlines given. These are strictly non-negotiable
 The format of the project report is given below. Please do not deviate from this format. The
deviation will attract negative mark. Let the word count be closer to the lower
specifications. Let the numbers speak for themselves as much as possible.
