INTRODUCTION
Literary criticism, the rational consideration of literary works and problems. It refers, as a
phrase, to any argumentation about literature, whether or not particular works are examined.
Thus, Plato's precautions about the dangerous effects of poetic inspiration in his Republic in
general are also taken as the earliest significant example of literary criticism. The word, more
narrowly interpreted, encompasses only what has been called "practical critique," the interpretation
of meaning and the quality judgment. In this narrow sense, criticism can be differentiated not only
from aesthetics (artistic merit philosophy) but also from other matters that can affect the literature
student: biographical questions, bibliography, historical information, sources and influences, and
process problems.
Criticism will be used here to encompass all stages of literary comprehension, but the focus
will be on evaluating literary works and the positions of their authors in literary history. For another
basic element of literary review.
How do you accept criticism? Is it heartily accepted or with mixed emotion? For Example: you
will ask you best friend to evaluate your literary writings then, s/he gives you several correction and
gives you tips how to improve your work.
Literary Criticism – according to Wikipedia- is the study, evaluation, and interpretation of
literature. Modern literary criticism is often influenced by literary theory, which is the philosophical
discussion of literature's goals and methods.
According to lumenlearning.com - refers to a genre of writing whereby an author critiques
a literary text, either a work of fiction, a play, or poetry. Alternatively, some works of literary
criticism address how a particular theory of interpretation informs a reading of a work or refutes
some other critics' reading of a work.
- When it comes to any kind of critique: it has to be “practical”. Criticism meant to see what has not
seen before, to say what has not been said before, and to change what needs to be changed”.

FUNCTIONS OF LITERARY CRITICISM

The purposes of literary criticism vary greatly, ranging from reviewing books to systematic
theoretical debate when they are written. While reviews can often decide whether a given book will
be widely sold, despite poor reviews, many works succeed commercially.
1) To give a simple review of books that you often read online.
2) To reevaluate any given text.
3) To invoke discussions, reassess society, and redefine culture based on a literary text.
4) To dip it toes into social and political arguments, especially if the literary work is
social or political in nature.

That much, however, is true of criticism: when it comes to novels, stories, poems, and the like, critics may be seen as
lawgivers. Based on their insightful critical lenses, they can make judgement and can build or break a writer. Even if
authors are owners of their own work in the true sense of the word, reviewers can still convince the audience, based on
how they see fit, to impose their own opinions on the work. In culture, that's how strong criticism is.

WHY Literary Criticism is important?

- Literary criticism aims to analyze, interpret and evaluate the texts created by humans at a
particular moment in time and in a specific cultural ambience. Analysis and interpretation
are acts of intellect and rationality.

Types of Literary Criticism

New Criticism Emphasized close reading, particularly of poetry, to discover how a

work of literature functioned as a self-contained, self-referential
aesthetic object.

Historical Criticism It emphasizes to seek to establish a reconstruction of the historical

situation of the author and recipients of the text.

Reader-Response It analyzes the reader’s response and its role in the production of
Criticism meaning.

Historical Criticism It emphasizes the historicity of a text by relating it to the

configurations of power, society, or ideology in a given time.

Deconstructive Criticism It emphasizes to seek out the contradictions in the context to prove
that the text lacks unity and coherence.

Feminist criticism It emphasizes to inform by feminist theory, or more broadly, by the

politics of feminism. It uses the principles and ideology of feminism to
critique the language of literature.

Marxism Criticism It emphasize to views literary works as reflections of the social

institutions from which they originate.

“Every day we learn more about Covid-19. Information to date suggests

that people with heart disease, or are at risk of heart disease due to factors
such as high blood pressure, diabetes or being severely overweight with a
body mass index higher than 40, are at an increased risk of complications
caused by the virus.
“If you have one of these conditions you should be taking all precautions
possible to reduce your chance of catching the virus.
“Viruses can cause significant inflammation which can injure the heart
and can worsen a person’s existing heart condition even if the virus does
not enter the heart directly.
“Evidence shows that people with higher levels of a protein used to
measure heart injury in their blood are more likely to die after contracting
Covid-19.
“However this kind of observational evidence can’t tell us why some people
suffer heart damage, whether this is caused by the virus or how exactly this
may lead to worse outcomes. It is now crucially important that we continue
to research coronavirus, and how it affects the heart, to help us to save and
improve as many lives as possible.”
