Language function : Conjuntions

1. Coordinate Conjunctions
Coordinate conjunctions join equal sentence parts. They are use to join any parallel elements of the
sentence.
 She is beautiful but lazy (two adjective)
 Which one do you like, coffee or tea? (two objects)
 My brother sang and danced on my birthday party. (two predicates)
 Swimming and reading are my hobies ( two subjects)
 There are seven coordinate conjunctions : for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so (FUNBOYS)

For dan so shows reason.

 I did not join the trip, for my mother was sick


 The dress was so expensive, so I did not buy it
 I could not come to your party, for I hadsomething important to do in the office
 His doughter is so cute, so everyone wants to kiss her.

And shows argumentation

 He is a smart boy, and he is also friendly


 I did my homework in the bedroom, and my mother cooked in the kitchen.

Or and Nor show contrast or alternation

 Will you join me to visit grandpa’s house or are you going to stay at home?
 I do not like watching romantic movie, nor do I like reading romantic novel
 What kind of music do you like, pop or electronic?

But and yet show contrast. Yet is sometimes considered as conjunctive adverb like however, rather
that a coordinate conjunction

 His mother moves to London, but he stays in Jakarta.


 Bobi likes to watch football match, yet he cannot play football
 She always studiest at night, yet she never gets good score

 Notice that after nor the sentence pattern takes question word order (the verb or auxiliary
before the subjects)
I am not good at playing guitar, nor is my brother.
 When a coordinateconjunction joins two sentences, the conjunctions is normaly preceded by
a comma
She will move to Jakarta next week, but she has not packed all her stuffs.

2. Correlative Conjunctions
Correlative conjunctions are used in pairs. They may be used to join two basic sentence patterns or
two parallel elements. They are
Either ….. or….
Neither …. Nor ….
Both …. And ….
Not only …. But also ….

Here are the examples correlative conjunctions use to join both sentence parts and whole
sentences.
 Either you will tell me the truth, or I will suc you
 She is neither smart nor diligent
 Both my mother and my father like cooking
 She is not only smart, but she is also diligent
 Not only she is smart, but she is also diligent

 Two subjects connected by both … and …. Take a plural verb.

Both my mother and my father are here


Both my sister and my brother are so cute

 When two subjects are connented by not only… but also…., either …. Or…., and neither …. Nor
…., the subjects that is closer to the verb determines whether the verb is singular or plural.
Neither my sister nor my mother is here
Neither my brother or my parents are here
Not only my mother, but also my father is here
Not only my brother, but also my parents are here

Exercise 1 . Coordinating Conjunction
Directions : combine the sentences using a comma and coordinating conjunction.
1. He has a lot of friends. He is very friendly
He has a lot of friends, for he is very friendly
2. I want to get a good grade. I will study hard
3. I had a cute rabbit. I lost him
4. She studied really hard. She got a good grade
5. Jean is beautiful. Jane is smart
6. He can cook spaghetti. He can cook fried rice
7. He didn’t want to be late. He hurried.
8. He is not really smart. He is very diligent
9. She wants to get a good grade. She didn’t study at all.
10. His mother lives in Bandung. He lives in Jakarta

Exercise 2. Correlative Conjunction

Directions : fill in the blanks using the appropriate correlative conjunctions.
