INFORMATION SHEET No. 6.2

WINDOWS SERVER

Learning Objectives:
After reading this Information Sheet, you should be able to:

 Define Server,
Install the Windows Server 2008 R2,
Identify and install the missing drivers in the computer after Windows
Server installation

What is a Server?
- is a software or hardware device that accepts and responds to
requests made over a network. The device that makes the request, and
receives a response from the server, is called a client. On the Internet, the
term "server" commonly refers to the computer system that receives requests
for a web files and sends those files to the client.
- servers can provide carious functionalities often called “SERVICES”,
such as sharing date or resources among the multiple clients, or performing
computation for a client.

Types of Servers
1. File Server – a computer and storage device dedicated to storing files. Any
user on the network can store files on the server.
2. Print Server – a computer that manages one or more printers.
3. Web Server – are computers that deliver (or serve up) Web pages. Every
Web server has an IP address and possibly a domain name. There are
many Web server software applications, including public domain software
and commercial packages.
4. Proxy Server – a server that sits between a client application, such as a
Web browser, and a real server. Proxy servers have two main purposes: to
improve performance and to filter requests.
5. Dedicated Server – is a single computer in a network reserved for serving
the needs of the network. For example, some networks require that one
computer be set aside to manage communications between all the other
computers.
6. Application Server – is a program that handles all application operations
between users and an organizations back-end business applications or
databases. This type of server is typically used for complex transaction-
based applications.
7. Cloud Server – are services made available to customers on demand via
internet. Rather than being provided by a single server or virtual server,
cloud server hosting services are provided by the multiple connected
servers that comprise a cloud.
8. Mail Server – A mail server (sometimes also referred to an e-mail server) is
a server that handles and delivers e-mail over a network, usually over the
Internet. A mail server can receive e-mails from client computers and
deliver them to other mail servers. A mail server can also deliver e-mails to
client computers. A client computer is normally the computer where you
read your e-mails, for example your computer at home or in your office.
Also an advanced mobile phone or Smartphone, with e-mail capabilities,
can be regarded as a client computer in these circumstances.
9. Game Server - is a server which is the authoritative source of events in
a multiplayer video game. The server transmits enough data about its
internal state to allow its connected clients to maintain their own accurate
version of the game world for display to players. They also receive and
process each player's input.

Windows Server 2008 R2

- is a server operating system produced by Microsoft. It was released to
manufacturing on July 22, 2009 and became generally available on
October 22, 2009. It is the successor to the Windows Vista-based Windows
Server 2008, released the previous year.
Enhancements in Windows Server 2008 R2 include new functionality
for Active Directory, new virtualization and management features, version 7.5
of the Internet Information Services web server and support for up to
256 logical processors. It is built on the same kernel used with the client-
oriented Windows 7, and is the first server operating system released by
Microsoft to exclusively support 64-bit processors.
Seven editions of Windows Server 2008 R2 were released: Foundation,
Standard, Enterprise, Datacenter, Web, HPC Server and Itanium, as well as
Windows Storage Server 2008 R2. A home server variant called Windows
Home Server 2011 was also released.
Windows Server 2008 R2 was succeeded by Windows Server 2012.

INSTALLATION OF MISSING DRIVERS IN THE MOTHERBOARD USING DRIVER PACK

Steps to follow;
1. Identify the missing drivers of the motherboard. Go to “Device Manager”.
Click start, select computer and right click, select manage.
(See pictures below)

The following are the common missing drivers in the motherboard after
the installation of Operating System (OS):
a. Ethernet controller - is hardware inside a computer that
communicates with the wired networking technology called
Ethernet. It's usually either a circuit board called an Ethernet card
or part of the computer's motherboard, and it includes a connection
to the rest of the computer, some microchips to handle Ethernet
communication and an Ethernet port where an Ethernet cable can
be plugged. If the Ethernet controller driver is missing or is not
installed correctly, the computer will not be able to connect to the
Local Area Network (LAN). In that case, you need a LAN driver
installer and installed it to your computer to fix this problem.

b. SM Bus Controller - also known as the SMBus or System

Management Bus is a set of integrated circuits, or chipset, located
within a personal computer. It provides a two-wire interface that
allows system and power-related components to communicate with
other parts of the computer. The SMBus monitors voltage and
temperature and can send a limited number of error messages when

problems occur. Computer owners usually don't need to worry about
this low level hardware device unless it stops functioning.

c. Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller - Universal Serial Bus (USB)

is basically a newer port that is used as a common interface to
connect several different types of devices such as keyboards,
printers, media devices, cameras, scanners, and mice. It is designed
for easy installation, faster transfer rates, higher quality cabling and
hot swapping. It has conclusively replaced the bulkier and slower
serial and parallel ports. A yellow exclamation mark next
to Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller means the device driver is
not installed correctly. In that case, your USB devices cannot be
recognized by PC. To fix this problem, you need download and
install the Universal Serial Bus controller driver.

d. PCI simple communications controller - is a software component

found on a computer that controls the PCI connected devices
plugged into that computer. PCI (Practical Communication
Interface) is a hardware component built into the computer that
allows a wide variety of devices to physically connect to the
computer via individual card slots. While the PCI allows the devices
to be connected to the computer, the simple communications
controller is responsible for managing the actions each device takes
and how software interacts with those devices. In other words, it is
used to manage a variety of PCI connected devices such as modems,
USB ports, SD card ports, and network adapters. Generally, the PCI
communications controller is used with devices that are not
compatible with standard ports, cables, and/or drivers. While these
devices may not work with the computer’s usual programs or
hardware, the user can install PCI devices by simply plugging them
into an available PCI slot.

The fastest solution so fix all these missing drivers is to use a DriverPack
Solution.

DrivePack Solution - is software which within few clicks, help you to

download all the required and competitive drivers to your computer. It allows
you to download and install the required drivers for your computer without
going through several processes. You just need to download the setup from
the website and run it. After that, the remaining work will be done by
the Driver Pack Solution. It is a very light software and highly compatible
with all versions of Microsoft Windows including Windows XP, Windows Vista,
Windows 7, Windows 8 and 10. It is very easy, handy and portable software.
It can be run from any folder or drive of the computer. Furthermore, it saves
you a lot of time by installing all the necessary drivers at once. It consumes
the very low amount of disk space. It also allows you to know about the
current version of all drivers on your computer and the latest versions
available of that driver.
