- One of the personal characteristics of a teacher is being patient. It is often expressed as being
conscientious and steadfast. Learners are unique individuals that have different personalities, skills, and
abilities. There are some who could easily learn the topics that we are teaching, but there are also some
who are struggling. Thus, being patient is necessary for us to better understand the situation of each
learner and try to come up with strategies to cater their educational needs. Other characteristics of an
effective teacher includes engaging presence, knowledgeable, virtuous, and passionate towards
teaching.
2. Among the presented philosophy, what school of thought do you think that yourself can best fit?
Why?
- Among the various philosophies in education, the school of thought that I prefer is Existentialism.
Existentialists believes that the knowledge that one needs to pursue, is the knowledge about the human
condition and the personal choice one makes. I believe that as an educator, we should recognize that
every student is a free, unique, and sentient being with personal fears, hopes and aspirations.
Moreover, we must create a learning environment where both teachers and students are free to reflect,
ask questions and engage in philosophical dialogue about issues and moral choices in life.
3. Do you agree that teachers are unfairly treated compared to other profession?
- I don’t think that teachers are unfairly treated compared to other professions. Each one of us is free to
choose what we want in life and what we want to become. Teaching is not an easy profession because it
is us, who molds the mind and life of our young learners. We have so many responsibilities that
sometimes, we don’t have any more time for ourselves or even our families. However, it is part of being
a teacher, and we just have to be flexible and adaptive to it. In addition, I believe that laws are created
to protect the rights of every human being regardless of social status and profession.
- I think that there is nothing wrong about teachers joining and participating in anti-government rallies.
Teachers also have the right to be heard and the right to establish and join organizations of their
choosing, whether local or national to defend their interests. However, we must remember that in every
right is a corresponding responsibility. Thus, we must do these protests in a peaceful manner and not to
be done during class hours, so that the learning of our pupils will not be affected.
5. What are the things that must be improved in the professional life of teachers?
- The things that must be improved in the professional life of teachers is the utilization of various
technologies. We must not only stick to the traditional means of teaching but must also try to
incorporate new ideas and techniques, to make learning more fun, engaging, and meaningful, and this
can be possible with the use of ICT skills and ideas in the teaching process.
Another is to be more collaborative with the parents and other stakeholders to make the educational
process more productive and successful especially this time of pandemic.
