CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

According to Tony Robbins, “To effectively communicate

we must realize that we are all different in the way we

perceive the world and use this understanding as a guide to

our communication with other’’

21st century communication has been more complex than

it was in the past. The appearance of language has been in

constant growth has been the appearance of language. It is

by no means null, though minimal time with grunts and

sounds, and movements. The exchange of information has

traversed time and space with materials available.

Information can now be transmitted and retained not only

through oral history, but also through materials. When

communication was able to reach distances without physically

moving for it to take place, technology was established.

Technology helps make it easier for all individuals to

connect with each other throughout their lives. In addition,

it also offers both individuals who are searching for jobs

and individuals who want to speak to their loved ones

outside the country a lot of opportunities. In human lives,

purposeful communication is very important. It is the best

way to connect people and interact well with each other.

Communication is central to both the life and survival of

individuals and an organization. It is a process of

exchanging people's ideas, knowledge, opinions, facts and

feelings to achieve a shared understanding. Purposeful

communication is a course that builds communication skills

for students and strengthens their cultural and

intercultural knowledge through multimodal tasks that

provide them with opportunities to communicate effectively

and respectfully to multicultural audiences in a local or

global context, with an emphasis on the effective use of the

English language, the Lingua Franca of the world. It

provides learners with tools for critical assessment of a

range of texts and focuses on the power of language and the

influence of images to highlight the value of responsively

transmitting messages. In their other academic endeavour,

their chosen discipline, and their future careers, the

information skills and perspectives that students acquire

from their course can be used as they write and generate

related oral, written, audio visual, and/or web-based

performance for different purposes. It also aims to

familiarize learners with the variety of English and

lexicons for successful global communication from various

English-speaking countries.

The world is now facing a huge disaster, the COVID-19

pandemic. Because of this, people suffer financially,

emotionally, mentally and physically. The educational

institutions put a pause in educational programs and later

on continued with a different means, which are modular and

online classes. Face-to-face learning is now prohibited to

avoid the further spread of the virus. With regards to

educational scenarios, face to face classes were suspended

and teachers were therefore required to find and implement

immediate yet effective ways to continue delivering the

mandatory curricula in order to conclude the academic year

satisfactorily.

In the Philippines, the colleges and universities have

different ways to inculcate learning to students. The Iloilo

State College Of Fisheries, in particular, chose to use the

blended-modular learning. The use of technology in form of

software such as smartphones or computer application for

learning is a great help for teachers and students during

this pandemic.

Using learning media based on information and communication

technology in English learning is an innovation in learning

that helps teachers and learners optimize learning process.

Specifically communication is a platform that is very

often used in teaching learning in the world of education

its users are increasing along with the initiation of health

protocol regulations caused by covid-19 virus, resulting in

a global pandemic.

Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study is to determine the students’

experiences and influence on the use of Purposive

Communication amidst to this pandemic.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:

1. What are the experiences of the students in studying

Purposive Communication despite of this pandemic?

2. What are the influences of Purposive Communication in

student’s learning despite of this pandemic?

Theoretical Framework

Everett Rogers’ model of the diffusion of innovation This

research is focused on the model of diffusion of innovation

by Everett Rogers (Rogers 1995). In the innovation decision

process, Rogers modeled five phases: Awareness, Persuasion,

Decision, Implementation, and Confirmation. Our research

revolves around the first two phases of the model of Rogers,

Information and Persuasion. For these two stages, we adapted

Rogers' three constructs, prior conditions, characteristics

of the decision-making unit, and perceived characteristics

of the innovation, to match our research domain. We call our

modified constructs (1) prior educational conditions, (2)

characteristics of students, and (3) perceived

characteristics of distance and on-line learning.

Constructivist-interpretative Theory. The constructivist-

interpretative approach relies on the sample studied to

generate data to understand participants’ backgrounds and

experiences. In that approach, a researcher develops

patterns of meaning from data and usually relies on

qualitative data collection methods and analysis (Mackenzie

& Knipe, 2006). For the current research, a constructivist

interpretive approach was justified because it included

ILOILO STATE COLLEGE OF FISHERIES-SAN ENRIQUE CAMPUS
College of Education
6

analyzing context patterns in order to understand how

learners perceived their interactions in online courses. A

positive interpretive approach was chosen because it

provided a detailed interpretation of online students'

perspectives and expectations at Iloilo State College of

Fisheries- San Enrique Campus and reporting the findings as

it were. That is, through looking through their lenses,

studying and recognizing how the participants made sense of

their experiences and perceptions. (Binder, Redstrom, &

Wensveen, 2011, Koskinen, Zimmerman). The article reflects

the views and viewpoints of the participants in an

interpretive analysis and clearly demarcates the

researcher's subjectivity.

Significance of the Study

The result of this study will be beneficial to the

following:

Students. In view of this pandemic crisis, this research

will decide what student attitudes and expectations are, and

also how they cope with this new normal learning

communication.

Parents. The result of this study would concentrate on how

parents support their children to be more independent of

their studies and functional learners in society.

Teachers. The result of this study will give teachers some

insight into how they will come up with the concept of using

various kinds of techniques to draw attention from students

and also encourage students to develop their communication

with their fellow classmates. The instructor should provide

the students with high quality materials.

School Administrators. The result of this study will provide

a source of knowledge and feedback about how teachers will

be advised to enhance learning communication and to provide

students with adequate learning in light of the reality of

this pandemic crisis.. Thus, a new normal learning purposive

communication will improve students’ performance in

learning.

Future Researchers. This study will serve as a reference for

potential researchers, give them an opinion about what is

correct and better outcome in order to enable teachers and

students in particular to surpass learning despite the

improvable problem in the future, and will also be able to

generate a good result for their research.

emphasize the understanding of the students and their

perceptions of this new normal learning communication,

striving to be productive students using accurate learning

materials in purposeful communication.

An in-depth use of their methods and interactions to deal

with these new learning abilities. In this study,

qualitative data analysis will be applied.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter deals with the literature and studies

relevant to the present research.

Nature of Communication

Communication can be described as the exchange of

information or the transfer from one person to the other or

from one end to the other of information, ideas or thoughts.

Communication is, according to McFarland, "a method of

substantive human interaction." More precisely, it is the

mechanism by which meanings are interpreted among human

beings and understandings are achieved.

” Newman and summer defined communication as “an exchange of

facts, ideas, opinions or emotions by two or more persons.”

Communication is the process of transmitting information

from one person to another and exchanging it. The object of

communication is to understand each other's transmitted

data. It should be clearly understood by him/her whatever

one wants to tell others, or else the very meaning of the

conversation will be defeated. Communication enables the

exchange of information within an organization. Using all

platforms and networks, understanding between various people

and departments through different media resources. This

knowledge flow is important for the quality and decision-

ILOILO STATE COLLEGE OF FISHERIES-SAN ENRIQUE CAMPUS
College of Education
11

making of education and management in general. By reducing

ambiguity and providing consistency of ideas and language,

communication helps to better understand other people. It

educates individuals as well. Written or oral, formal,

informal and upward, downward, horizontal, diagonal,

interpersonal, intrapersonal, Intra-organizational, inter-

departmental. The interaction brings individuals together,

closer to each other. It bridges the distance between people

and communities through the flow and interpretation of

knowledge between them. The most critical aspect of

communication is knowledge. It is the data that is conveyed,

evaluated, analysed and interpreted and processed.

Therefore, the instructor must spare time for day-to-day

lessons to compile, evaluate and store the data for

decision-making.

Purpose of Communication

Teachers handle the classroom in various ways and the most

significant part of it is communication. Management, by

others, is getting things done. Therefore, individuals

working in an institution such as a classroom should be

taught how to perform the job assigned to them in the best

way possible. The communication is essential in any

organization. The purpose of the communication can be

summarized into the following:

ILOILO STATE COLLEGE OF FISHERIES-SAN ENRIQUE CAMPUS
College of Education
12

1. Flow of Information - Significant information must flow

continuously from top to bottom and vice versa. The people

involved in the classroom must be kept informed about the

organizational objectives and other developments taking

place in the classroom and in the school. A care should be

taken that no one should be misinformed. The information

should reach the ones in particular position in the language

he or she can understand better. The use of difficult words

should be avoided. The right information should reach the

right person, at right time through the right person.

2. Coordination - Through communication, the efforts of all

the people involved in working in the organization can be

coordinated for the accomplishment of the organizational

goals. The coordination of all the people involved and their

efforts is the essence of management which can be attained

through effective communication.

3. Learning Management Skills - The communication

facilitates flow of information, ideas, beliefs, perception,

advice, opinion, orders and instructions etc., which enable

the teachers and students to learn skills through experience

of others. The experience of the sender of the message gets

reflected in it which the person at the receiving end can

learn by analyzing and understanding it.

4. Preparing People to Accept Change - The proper and

effective communication is an important tool in the hands of

management of any organization to bring about overall change

in the organizational policies, procedures and work style

and make the people involved to accept and respond

positively.

5. Developing Good Human Relations – Teachers and students

and other school personnel exchange their ideas, thoughts

and perceptions with each other through communication. This

helps them to understand each other better. They realize the

difficulties faced by their other people at school and their

happy experiences. This leads to promotion of good human

relations in the organization.

6. Ideas of Students are Encouraged - The communication

facilitates inviting and encouraging the ideas from students

during lessons. This will develop creative thinking.

Honoring students’ ideas will further motivate them for hard

work and a sense of belonging to the classroom will be

developed. It will provide them with the encouragement to

share information with their others without hesitation. The

teacher must know the ideas, thoughts, comments, reactions

and attitudes of their students.

Importance of Communication
ILOILO STATE COLLEGE OF FISHERIES-SAN ENRIQUE CAMPUS
College of Education
14

Effective communication is vital for efficient classroom

management and to improve social relations among teachers

and students. In modern world the growth of

telecommunication, information technology and the growing

competition and complexity in production have increased

importance of communication in organizations, large and

small, irrespective of their type and kind. The following

points can illustrate the importance of communication in

human resource management:

1. Foundation for Action - Communication acts as a

foundation for any action. Starting of any activity begins

with communication which brings information necessary to

begin with.

2. Planning Becomes Easy - Communication facilitates

planning. Planning is made easy by communication.

3. Means of Coordination: Communication is an important tool

for coordinating the efforts of various people involved in

the organization such as school.

4. Aids in Decision-Making - The information collected

through communication aids in decision-making. Communication

facilitates access to the vital information required to take

decisions.
ILOILO STATE COLLEGE OF FISHERIES-SAN ENRIQUE CAMPUS
College of Education
15

5. Provides Effective Leadership - A communication skill

bring the teacher near to his students and exchange ideas

and submits appropriate information, knows their opinions,

seeks advices and make decisions. This enables a teacher to

win confidence of his/her students through constantly

communicating with them and removing probable

misunderstandings. In this way he/she leads them to

accomplish the lesson objective.

6. Boosts Morale and Motivation - An effective communication

system in stills confidence among teachers and students

ensuring change in their attitude and behaviour. The main

cause of conflict and dissatisfaction is misunderstanding

which can be removed through communication skills. The

removal of misunderstanding makes the teacher and the

students understand each other and create good relations.

This boosts up the morale of the people and motivates them

to work harder.

Principles of Communication

Effective communication will make any organization to fully

grow to something productive. So to have effective

ILOILO STATE COLLEGE OF FISHERIES-SAN ENRIQUE CAMPUS
College of Education
16

communication certain principles are to be followed. They

are as follows:

1. Clarity - The principle of clarity means the communicator

should use such a language which is easy to understand. The

message must be understood by the receiver. The words used

should be simple and unambiguous. The language should not

create any confusion or misunderstanding. Language is the

medium of communication; hence it should be clear and

understandable.

2. Adequacy and Consistency - The communicator must

carefully take into account that the information to be

communicated should be complete and adequate in all respect.

Inadequate and incomplete message creates confusion and

delays the action to be taken. The adequate information must

be consistent with the organizational objectives, plans,

policies and procedures. The message which is inconsistent

may cause confusion.

3. Integration - The principle of integration portrays that

through communication the efforts of people involved in the

organization should be integrated towards achievement of

organizational objectives. The very aim of communication is

to achieve the set target. The communication should aim at

ILOILO STATE COLLEGE OF FISHERIES-SAN ENRIQUE CAMPUS
College of Education
17

coordinating the activities of the people involved to attain

the goals.

4. Economy - The unnecessary use of communication system

will add to cost. The system of communication must be used

efficiently, timely i.e. at the appropriate time and when it

is necessary.

5. Feedback - The purpose of communication will be defeated

if feedback is not taken from the receiver. The confirmation

of the receipt of the message in its right perspective from

its receiver fulfills the object of communication. The

feedback is essential only in case of written communication

and messages sent through messengers. In case of oral type

of communication the feedback is immediately known.

6. Need for Communication Network - The route through which

the communication passes from sender or communicator to its

receiver or communicate refers to communication network. For

effective communication this network is essential. The

effectiveness will also depend upon the availability of

adequate network.

7. Attention: The message communicated must draw the

attention of the receiver and ensure action from him in the

right perspective. The efficient, sincere and prompt manager

ILOILO STATE COLLEGE OF FISHERIES-SAN ENRIQUE CAMPUS

18

succeeds in drawing the attention of his subordinates to

what he is conveying.
