MARKETING
Lesson
PRESERVED/
1
PROCESSED FOOD

What’s In

Based on your experience in preparing simple recipes of preserving foods, what are
the qualities to consider in selecting fruits and vegetables for preservation? What
are the benefits of preserving foods?

What’s New

When you are watching TV, you will come across varied advertisement programs
about different products - from food, home appliances, clothing and many more.
What do you think is the reason why most business owners are paying TV stations
just to air their product? This is the first step to make potential customers buy the

2
product. Promoting the product aims to create awareness and interest of potential
customers to the product and this is the goal of advertising.

What Is It

Producing and selling preserved or processed food has a high success rate and can
provide additional income for the family. It is also the most purposeful activity that
anyone can do. Like any product or service, however, a good marketing strategy and
program can help create awareness of the product or service and boost sales. We
market our products to be able to get prospective buyers.

Success in the marketing of your preserved products needs hard work and
persistence. There are some tips to serve as your guide to help succeed in this
livelihood:

Place- make sure that you are accessible to your market. If your place is not easily
accessible or difficult to find, offer free delivery for bulk orders or charge a minimal
delivery fee for smaller orders. You might want to join trade fairs to bring your
products closer to prospective buyers or visitors.

Quality product- no amount of marketing will succeed if the product is of poor

quality. Before launching your product, conduct a product tasting among friends,
family members and neighbors. Take note of their comments and suggestions to
improve quality. Try them out until you come up with the best quality product.

Efficient Worker/Helper- once the orders begin to come in and you start to get
swamp, you will need to hire and train someone to help in production, marketing
and delivery. You may lose customers if you are unable to deliver and your product
quality suffers just to keep up with volume orders.

Capital- in order to operate even in a small business, there should be sufficient

capital or money to buy the tools, equipment and ingredients. Registration of
business and getting the necessary permits from the city government, Bureau of
Internal Revenue and others would also require payment of fees. Even the place of
business or storage facility should be maintained and kept clean and orderly. These
would also require additional expense on your part.

Management-a good manager is creative, decisive and an excellent planner. You

should also know how to relate with your buyers, suppliers and helpers.

Packaging Aside from clay pots and bottles, your finished products can be placed
on traditional baskets, sacks or trays. Dried grass, palm leaves, bamboo and paper
3
can also be used as packaging materials. As much as possible, plastic materials
should be avoided in packaging products. Collapsible card boxes, fiber, wood,
paper or sacks can also be used when the products need to be transported.

Packaging is important for all kinds of products. It is one of the first touch points
to the consumer and makes them want to buy the product. In the era of variety
when every product has multiple variants and as many brands, it is necessary to
stand out from the competition. This is where packaging design comes into the
picture.

Guidelines in designing packaging:

i. Make several studies of designs to choose from.
ii. Make sure that the cost of the packaging does not exceed 15 to 20 percent
of the cost of the product itself.
iii. Make the packaging attractive to showcase your product but make sure
that it does not become too expensive.
iv. Label the packaging with the name of the product. If it is a food item, put
the ingredients used in the label.

There are few factors that are considered as key in product packaging design, they
can be listed as:
1. Shape
2. Printed images or designs
3. Packaging materials
4. Practicality
5. Environmental impact
6. Printed information

Packaging Design Examples:

http://gg.
1. Togo Burger

The design of Togo burger is one of the best examples of creative as well as
convenient food packaging design.

4
2. Nikita http://gg.gg/pictures_marketing

Nikita design agency creatively made use of the strands and shapes of pasta to
create an engrossing and fascinating series of pasta packaging that capture
attention on the shelves. Creating shelf impact is truly a matter of creativity and
exploration of packaging design templates and makes it a huge difference in
product sales.

3. Molocow Milk

Molocow milk packaging uses

the common meme about cow
abduction and turned into a
quirky milk packaging
concept that looks like UFO
abducting a cow. The
triangular shaped glass bottle
resembles a beam of light
coming out of a UFO-shaped
bottle cap made of plastic
material.

4. Honey package made of beeswax

It focuses on using 100%

beeswax to produce a
sustainable packaging which
can be burnt down as a
candle, making it completely
waste-free. It is an
aesthetically pleasing
packaging concept for food
and cosmetic products.

5. Heat pressed hay for eggs packaging

Sustainable egg boxes made of

hay that are heat-pressed into
carton shapes. Creating an egg
packaging that is veritable, eye-
catching and that will make
sure that the egg doesn’t break.

5
6. Chip can which blooms into a bowl

Bloom chips is a wrinkled

packaging that spreads out
to create its own bowl. Bloom
Chips concept won a Red
Dot award for its discernible
artistry and was designed by
designer Dohyuk Kwon.

There are packaging techniques that will help you in planning your own packaging
designs:
● Use category imagery. If your
product is popular with an
icon, use it along with the
product name to create
instant recognition.
http://gg.gg/pictures_marketing

● Iconize the product. Instead

of a photograph, create
stylized icons of the product
itself, which can be used in
multiple formats. http://gg.gg/pictures_marketing

● Make it comical. Cartoons

are not just for kids; some
products can carry off fun
imagery even if it’s not
exclusively meant for
children.

● Keep it minimalist. Sleek,

minimalist designs are not
going out of fashion anytime
soon. This packaging works
especially for health-related
products.

6
● Show the product. Instead of
a simple and clear showcase,
use the product innovatively
with the design to highlight
the use of the product.

http://gg.gg/pictures_marketing

● Make it collectible. The

entire range of products
can be made in a collection
so that the consumer
would want to collect all
the versions.
http://gg.gg/pictures_marketing

● Just go bizarre. Take the

packaging and turn it on its
head. Completely change
the traditional packaging to
something more functional
and unique.

● Make it functional. Make

the packaging designs
useful by completing a task
related to the product itself,
so the consumer does not
need anything else.

● Make it elegant. A daily

product does not have to be
boring and unoriginal, use
imagery that can change
the look from boring to
elegant.
http://gg.gg/pictures_marketing

● Remove the excess. Both

paper and plastic are
detrimental to the
environment, remove the
excess and showcase your
product at the same time.
http://gg.gg/pictures_marketing

7
● Make it appealing. Some
products are consumed
from the packaging like
bottled drinks, making
them appealing to drink
from.

● Create a color theme.

Certain colors remind us
of certain things. For
example, blue goes to the
sea and green for trees.

● Be inspired by nature.
Get imagery and
inspiration from nature
related to your product,
you can highlight this
with beautiful
illustrations and images.

Cost Effectiveness of the Packaging

The use of packaging represents an added cost in marketing and the price of the
marketed product. On the other hand, presentation and the quality of the product
may make it more desirable. Moreover, the marketable life of the product may be
extended because of good packaging.

Computing for the Cost and Profit

How would you know if you earned or not from your project? First, you must
compute the total cost of the product. Then, compute the markup for you to
determine the selling price and to compute for the profit earned. Deduct cost from
the total amount sold. The excess amount less the cost is the profit.
Example:
Product
50.00 – is the cost
x .20(20%) – is the mark
up

thus,
50.00 - cost
+ 10.00 - profit
60.00 - selling price

What’s More

Compute for the cost, profit (20%) and selling price of the following:

What I Have Learned

Remember:
1. No amount of marketing will be successful if the product or service is of
poor quality.
2. Find ways to keep cost and expenses down without sacrificing quality.
3. Accessibility is important because you will not be able to sell anything if
your customers cannot reach you.
4. Make your packaging more attractive and functional by making sure it
does not cost too much.
5. Make use of recyclable or reusable packaging as much as possible.
6. Make sure that important product information is found in the packaging.

9
What I Can Do

Instructions. Choose one preserved food product available at home and show your
creativity by creating a packaging of that product by using recycled materials.
Document yourself while doing the activity by taking pictures. Post the pictures on
the group chat/messenger. For those who do not have internet access, please pass
your output as you get your next module.
