16. Assertion: A ray of light travelling from a rarer medium to a denser medium slows down
and bends away from the normal. When it travels from a denser medium to a rarer
medium, it speeds up and bends towards the normal.
Reason: The speed of light is higher in a rarer medium than a denser medium.
Choose the correct option: [1 Mark]
(a.) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.

[1 Mark]
(a.) Heterotrophs (b.) Necrotrophs (c.) Autotrophs (d.) Exatrophs
4. Assertion : The twinkling of stars is due to the fact that the refractive index of earth's
atmosphere fluctuates.
Reason : In cold countries the phenomenon of looming ( ship appears in the sky)
takes place because the refractive index of air decreases with height.
Choose the correct option. [1 Mark]

Case Study 1 -
According to the "Law of Conservation of Mass", mass can neither be created nor destroyed in a
chemical reaction. That is, the total mass of the elements present in the products of a chemical
reaction has to be equal to the total mass of the elements present in the reactants. In other words,
the number of atoms of each element remains the same, before and after a chemical reaction. Hence,
we need to balance a skeletal chemical equation.
2. Which of the following steps are involved in writing a balanced chemical equation?
[1 mark]
(a)Word equation is written in formula form.
(b)Boxes are drawn around each formula and nothing is changed inside these boxes.
(c)Number of atoms of different elements present in unbalanced equations are listed.

Case Study 2-
Ram was suffering from stomach pain for a number of days. He consulted a doctor who
advised him to take two antacid tablets after each meal for about a week and avoid spicy
food. Ram followed the advice strictly and was cured.
