The jali allows light and air while minimizing the sun
and the rain. Also when the air passes through these
openings, its velocity increases giving profound
diffusion. The holes are often nearly of the same width
or smaller than the thickness of the stone, thus
providing structural strength.

material for construction and also finer hand crafts. The city has a
rich legacy of ornately carved stone architecture, which acts as a
source of inspiration for the craftspersons of today. Much of the
newer construction carries forward the traditional design
language. Chhatris (carved cupolas), stone fretwork, geometric
and floral carvings – are all employed in new homes and hotels.

PROCURING & PREPARING THE

SANDSTONE
The famous yellow sandstone of
Jaisalmer is found in areas
surrounding the city. It comes from
mines like Jethwai, Cipla and
Moolsagar. Heavy machinery is
required to extract and break the
rock. Large blocks of it are trucked
to factories in the industrial area of
town, where they are further cut
into smaller pieces.

Iron wedges are hammered

into the rock to facilitate its
cutting.
The blocks are loaded into trolleys
and transported to factories where
they are further cut into slabs and
smaller blocks.
While small blocks are used like bricks
for construction, architectural
elements like pillars and doorways
are carved using basic hand tools
and simple electric machines.

Slabs of stone at the factory

await further transportation and
processing. This stone can also
be obtained as floorplates, facing
bricks, wall stones, skirting stones,
and cobblestones.

Jaisalmer Sandstone is a sedimentary rock formed in the city of
jaisalmer in the extraction . Composed of sand mineral particles
(such as quartz or feldspar), this natural stone is very tough and
resistant to weathering. It is a popular building and paving
material from ancient times.
This natural stone usually forms where sand is laid down and
buried. For instance, The famous red rocks of the Grand Canyon
were formed in a desert setting. The sand grains in sandstone
give information about the past such as the kind of countryside
that produced the sand or how far they were transported.
SKETCHES FOR MATERIAL USE :

Stone walls are usually made of local materials

varying
from limestone and flint to granite and sandstone.
However, the quality of building stone varies
greatly, both in its endurance to weathering,
resistance to water penetration and in its ability to
be worked into regular shapes before construction.
Worked stone is usually known as ashlar, and is often
used for corners in stone buildings.

Coursed ashlar stone masonry is a construction

built from tooled and dressed ashlar stone with
uniform properties throughout. High in cost,
labor, and waste caused by the tooling
processes, coursed ashlar masonry is laid with
equal heights and joints between every
consecutive layer of construction.
