INTRODUCTION

This compendium is especially designed for Physical Education Grade 7


Fourth Quarter to facilitate easier teaching-learning processes. It is a brief but
concise information about Exercise Programs in Festival Dance..

The objective of this compendium is for the learner to demonstrate


understanding of how festival dances play an essential role in developing one’s
personal fitness .

This compendium will help learners identify the nature and origin of a
festival dance and identify the importance of being physically fit.

The basis of this compendium is the Most Essential Learning


Competencies ( MELC ) in Physical Education Grade 7 Fourth Quarter and as
follows:

1. Undertakes physical activity and physical fitness assessments


2. Reviews goals based on assessment results
3. Describes the nature and background of the dance

FESTIVAL DANCES

Basic Concepts of Festival Dances

a. Festival dances are cultural dances performed to the strong beats of percussion
instruments.
b. Festival dance may be religious or secular in nature.
c. Festival dances are performed by people of various walks of life for entertainment
fun, and merrymaking purposes.

1. Why Festival?
Festival dances are cultural dances performed to the strong beats of drums
by a community of people sharing the same culture. It is usually done to honor a
certain Patron Saint or as a thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest. Festival Dances
draw the people’s culture by portraying the people’s way of life through
movements, costumes.
Filipino do festivals primarily to celebrate unity amidst diversity of culture.
Festivals have been a consistent crowd-drawing activity which in a way uplifts the
economy of one’s place due to its tourism and entertainment value.

2. Nature of Festival Dances

a. Cultural with Religious influence


These are dances characterized by movements showing reverence to a
religious icon believed to have interceded in their personal life

❖ Ati-atihan Festival is a feast held annually in January to honor Santo


Niño. The name Ati-atihan means “ to be like Aetas” or “make
believe Atis”. The festival is cons-st of tribal dance, music,
accompanied by indigenous costumes and weapons, and parade
along the streets.

❖ Dinagyang – is a religious and cultural festival in iloiol heald on the
fourth Sunday of January, or right after the Sinulog in Cebu, and Ati-
atihan in Aklan.

❖ Sinulog - the traditional and ritual dance in honor of Santo Niño.

❖ Peace of our Lady of Peñafrancia – is celebrated on the third Sunday


of September in Naga City. The feast is preceded by a novena, nine
days of prayer, in honor of Virgin Mary.

❖ Pahiyas Festival – one of the most colorful festival in our country to


honor San Isidro Labrador, the patron saint of farmers.

b. Non-Religious Festivals
❖ Lanzones Festival – an annual thanksgiving celebration for Camiguin
Island’s bountiful harvest. The province of Camiguin is known for
having the sweetest lanzones in Mindanao.

❖ Ibalong Festival – a non-religious festival in Legazpi, Albay. The


festival celebrates the epic story Ibalong who was accompanied by
three legendary heroes namely: Baltog, Handyong, Bantong.

❖ Kalilangan Festival - is an annual festivity that is celebrated in


General Santos City. The Kalilangan festival celebrates the tradition
of sharing, hospitality, altruism, that is part of the cultural heritage
of Mindanao.

c. Film - This festival is a gathering of artist, film makers, directors, scriptwriters, and
other people involved in film making

❖ The Metro Manila Film Festival- is an annual film festival held in


Manila.

d. Flower Festival
❖ Panagbenga Festival – is a month-long annual flower festival in
Baguio. The festival is held during the month of February. It was
created as a tribute to the city’s flowers and as a way to rise up from
the devastation of the 1990 Luzon earthquake.

3. Fundamental Skills
These are practical skills that a child need for living and being which are
sometimes considered basic or functional. The designation of fundamental skills is
preferable to other labels because the skills are simple. Characteristics and
attributes are necessary to function in the environment.

These are movements that allow us to move from one point in space to
another.

6. Manipulative Skills
These are skills developed when handling an object. Most of these skills
involve the hands and feet but other parts of the body can be used like catching,
kicking, throwing, etc.

7. Healthy Lifestyle Habits


❖ Participate in a lifetime physical activity program
❖ Do not smoke cigarettes
❖ Eat right
❖ Avoid snacking
❖ Maintain recommended body weight through adequate nutrition
and exercise
❖ Sleep 6 to 8 hours every night
❖ Lower your stress levels
