RENEWABLE ENERGY CAN BE BEAUTIFUL
The Land Art Generator Initiative (LAGI) has brought together a
network of artists, architects, scientists, landscape architects, and
engineers in a first of its kind collaboration.

The goal of the Land Art Generator Initiative is to design and construct
public art installations that uniquely combine aesthetics with utility
scale clean energy generation. The works will serve to inspire and
educate while they provide renewable power to thousands of homes
around the world.

www.landartgenerator.org

LAGI has held three free and international design
competitions in partnership with private & public
entities. There is now a portfolio of over 600 submissions
representing more than 60 countries.

In order to get the broadest and most comprehensive set

of submittals the design sites are chosen based on their
international place recognition.

LAGI 2016 Partners + Team LAGI 2016: Southern California
The City of Santa Monica Interdisciplinary teams will be invited to design their ideas for large-scale

USGBC LA and site-specific public art installations that generate carbon-neutral

electricity and/or drinking water for the City of Santa Monica. The site
Green Public Art Consultancy offers the opportunity to utilize wave energy as well as wind, solar, and
other technologies.
Shawati’ Magazine (Media Partner)
Throughout 2016, LAGI will hold numerous events showcasing the
submissions and the design ideas they contain. Public programming will
reach a broad demographic throughout Los Angeles County and beyond
with exhibitions, panel discussions, lectures, publications, and more
related to the science of energy as experienced through art.

Programming in Southern California throughout 2016 will show how

interdisciplinary collaboration is playing an important role in defining the
design influence of renewable energy on our constructed environments
and point out the reciprocal role of society in defining the aesthetics of
renewable energy infrastructure itself.

The LAGI 2016 Design Guidelines will be available on January 1, 2016.

Bringing LAGI to your city.
SITE SELECTION CRITERIA
One of the first steps in the planning process is to establish the most suitable site for the competition,
establish a project boundary, and obtain extensive survey information.

The ideal sites should:

• provide good exposure to renewable energy resources

• contain a rich conceptual or historical background about which artist teams can be inspired
• be located in a space that is visually interesting and inspiring
• be owned by an entity that will be a good partner for the project
• provide enough space for a distinction between public and secure areas
Funding Mechanisms for Building Land Art Generators

• 1% for the arts

developers can provide some portion of their onsite energy
with the art budget

on large projects this can be more than sufficient to construct

a high output LAGI project

public art that helps to fulfill LEED or Living Building certification

• Foundations
• Crowd-sourcing (cooperative installations)
• City, provincial, and national public funds earmarked for arts and/
or the environment
The capacity of public artwork (especially large-scale and high profile
works) to increase economic activity is well documented

According to the NYC Economic Development Corporation, NYC Waterfalls by

Olafur Eliasson, cost $15.5 million to install (privately funded) and brought an
estimated $53 million in incremental spending from visitors who came to see
the installation over the nearly four months that it was in operation.

That’s an extra $483,000 per day to Manhattan businesses

as a direct result of a public art installation.

Imagine a permanent work of art of a similar scale and with

similar economic stimulus benefit.

And now imagine that this work of art educates hundreds of visitors every
day about the technology that it employs, while contributing clean energy
NYC Waterfalls to the electrical grid equivalent to the energy consumed by hundreds or

even thousands of homes. It may be that sustainable cities of the future
will seize on the opportunity and efficiency that may come from the
fusion of renewable energy infrastructure and public art amenity.
