Chapter I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter presents the background and the problem of the study.

This will also present the Purpose, Scope and Significance of this study.

Introduction

Social skills are the skills use to communicate and interact with each

other, both verbally and non-verbally, through gestures, body language and

our personal appearance. Human being are sociable creatures and we have

developed many ways to communicate our messages and feelings with

others. Developing social skills is about being aware of how we communicate

with others.Social awareness is the ability to understand and respond to the

needs of others. Understanding other people's feelings is central to emotional

intelligence. Awareness of social situations means carefully consider what

people want, and plan to communicate with them in a way that is intended to

meet that need. Others will be labelled uncaring and insensitive, but it can be

the reciprocal of it when they are able to understand and respond to the

needs and values of individuals.

Most people cannot advance far in life without strong interpersonal

relationships. Focusing on relationships will help you get a job, get promoted

and make new friends. Well honed social skills can increase your happiness

and satisfaction and give you a better outlook on life. In addition, Social skills

include things like initiating conversations, making friends, having good

sportsmanship and handling bullying effectively (Monica Luke 2018).

By developing your skills through ``social awareness program", you

become more charismatic, a desirable trait. Human life is predicted on social

interaction and the maintenance of a variety of interpersonal relationships.

People's effort to affiliate and to be accepted underlie a great deal of their

behaviour, and failures to be relationally valued and to foster desired

relationships have a strong impact on people's emotions, self-views, social

behavior, psychological well-being and physical health. Social Awareness is

very important to improve the socialization skills of an individual. An individual

must be aware on the diversity the world has. A human is uniquely different

from another. Thus, those diffences should not be a hindrance to improve

one's socialization skills.

Usually, HUMSS students in Lemery Senior Highschool were too

attached with the same people around them. HUMSS students were sticking

or staying to someone they already know. As the researchers observed, most

of the HUMSS students clearly interacting only to those people who had been

their classmate before or their classmate on the present. HUMSS students

are not that socializing or interacting well with any other students with different

strand, attitude, identity, and behaviour. HUMSS students are not that

interested on social awareness that will help them in socializing with others.

But it is important to control the socialization of HUMSS students so it will not

be a burden on them. Some of the HUMSS students find it really easy to

2
IMPROVING THE SOCIALIZATION SKILLS OF GRADE 12 HUMSS STUDENTS THROUGH SOCIAL AWARENESS PROGRAM

empathize with others. But the researchers cannot change the fact that there

are also students that are shy and quiet, they may only have one or two close

friends but not a large group of friends. They tend to feel awkward or

uncomfortable around people they don't know very well.

For the HUMSS students to improve their socialization skills, the

researchers came up with this topic. As what the researchers stated above,

this topic will help the HUMSS students to be more active in socializing with

different people around them. The researchers want every HUMSS students

to have social awareness so that there wouldn't be any conflict on their

socialization skills. Another one is that the researchers know how much it is

important to improve the socialization skills of the HUMSS students. The

researchers want to help every HUMSS students to lessen their difficulties in

socializing with other students.

The researchers are interested in improving the socialization skills of

Grade 12 HUMSS students.By this, the researchers and other HUMSS

students of Lemery Senior Highschool will be socially aware and will improve

their socialization skills.

Scope, Limitation and Delimination

This study focuses on improving the socialization skills of Grade 12

HUMSS students through Social awareness program in Lemery Senior

Highschool.

This study will include the ideas and perception of Grade 12 HUMSS

students at Lemery Senior Highschool.

This study will not include the ideas and perception of students in other

strands in Lemery Senior Highschool.

Significance of the Study

The Result of this study will benefit the folllowing:

To the School Administrators, by this study school administrators will

know what school activities and programs are applicable for the students to

enhance or improve their socialozation skills.

To the Teachers, they will be able to know the difficulties of their

students in terms of socialization. And by this teachers may help the students

to improve those socialization skills that should be improved.

To the Students, they will know the importance of improving their

socialization skills. And this will help them to contineously improve those

socialization skills.

To the Future Researchers, this will provide new directions for further

studies that can be explored, related to this topic.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the related literature and studies after the

synthesis of art, theoretical and conceptual framework to fully understand the

reseach to be done and lastly the definition of terms for better comprehension

to the study.

Improving the Socialization Skills of Students

Socialization

Broad and Narrow Socialization: The Family in the Context of a

Cultural Theory, Socialization is culturally specific, but this does not mean

certain cultures are better or worse than others. Socialization prepares people

to participate in a social group by teaching them its norms and expectations.

Socialization has three primary goals: teaching impulse control and

developing a conscience, preparing people to perform certain social roles,

and cultivating shared sources of meaning and value (Arnett 2015).

Other than that Horton and Hunt (2011) said that Socialization is

a continuous and life long process till to the end of life. An individual learns

language, culture, values, norms, attitudes and behaviors which molds his/her

6
IMPROVING THE SOCIALIZATION SKILLS OF GRADE 12 HUMSS STUDENTS THROUGH SOCIAL AWARENESS PROGRAM

personality and becomes a social-being. This is the only process which a

person develops his/her personality and self when an individual interacts with

other members of his/her family and community or groups. Individual learns

more about culture and they transmit these norms to the next

generation.Family is important to the socialization process because their

parents affect a child personality a lot. Parents are the source of social

indemnity of their children.

Socialization skills

Social skills are the skills we use to communicate and interact with

each other, both verbally and non-verbally, through gestures, body language

and our personal appearance. Human beings are sociable creatures and we

have developed many ways to communicate our messages, thoughts and

feelings with others (Eden 2011). Social skills simply refers to any and

different ways of human in socalizing or communicating with others. These

can be something that are natural to us humans.

In line with that Unley (2017) states that Social skills are vital in

enabling an individual to have and maintain positive interactions with others.

Many of these skills are crucial in making and sustaining friendships. Social

interactions do not always run smoothly and an individual needs to be able to

implement appropriate strategies, such as conflict resolution when difficulties

in interactions arise. It is also important for individuals to have empathy as it

7
IMPROVING THE SOCIALIZATION SKILLS OF GRADE 12 HUMSS STUDENTS THROUGH SOCIAL AWARENESS PROGRAM

LEMERY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

allows them to respond in an understanding and caring way to how others are

feeling.

Level of Social Awareness

Social Awareness

As mentioned by Airth (2018) social awareness is the ability to

comprehend and appropriately react to both broad problems of society and

interpersonal struggles. This means that being socially aware relates to being

aware of your environment, what's around you, as well as being able to

accurately interpret the emotions of people with whom you interact. In the

Environment we live in, we really need to be aware in every events and

different situation around us. There is a diversity on us but we should

understand and accept each other through our social awareness.

In addition, Goleman (2015) the competencies associated with

being socially aware are Empathy, Organizational Awareness and Service. He

also said that social awareness is the ability to understand and respond to the

needs of others. This is the third of the domains of emotional intelligence.

Awareness of social situations means you carefully consider what people

want, and plan to communicate with them in a way that is intended to meet

that need.

8
IMPROVING THE SOCIALIZATION SKILLS OF GRADE 12 HUMSS STUDENTS THROUGH SOCIAL AWARENESS PROGRAM

LEMERY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

On the other hand Lakhiani (2019) said that Humans are social

beings. Without social awareness, we simply won’t fit into any society. So, as

we are living in a society, we all must have a certain amount of knowledge on

social awareness definition. This states that we should really know what social

awareness is for us to have a good communication and social life with our

friends. And ofcourse this has something to do about being sensitive in our

actions and choice of words. We should always remember to be socially

aware so that we could fit in to the society we have.

Difficulties of students in socializing

Perhaps Bailey (2015) stated that there are students might be

distracted by too much socializing, and there are children that mingles mostly

in their age group which is considered a drawback by some. Some fear a

humanistic agenda in public schools which conflicts with certain religious

beliefs, bullying during socialization can have a long term negative effect on

children, student silence for most of the day including lunch breaks and

children spend too much time online and not enough time with face-to-face

contacts she added.

Along with Bailey, Andrysczyk (2018) said that some people are

socially awkward. No matter what educational setting they choose. Just

getting out of the house can be exhausting. Some days are hard. Sometimes

just getting out of bed or getting dressed is all some of us can manage.

9
IMPROVING THE SOCIALIZATION SKILLS OF GRADE 12 HUMSS STUDENTS THROUGH SOCIAL AWARENESS PROGRAM

LEMERY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Introverts, Depression and Chronical Illness can be considered as the causes

of this difficulties. She also said the trust issues of students, maybe they have

trust issues. Maybe they’ve been hurt before. It’s hard to trust again. It’s hard

to give others the benefit of the doubt. Or give another chance after a conflict.

It’s easier and safer to close yourself off, she added.

Improving the Socialization skills of students

Socialization

Based on the study of Kulterer (2015) Socialization has been

described as the process by which individuals learn and adopt the knowledge,

skills, values, attitudes, and expectations of a group in a particular community

or organization. They described socialization as a process, Socialization to

higher education is an important part of the preparation of future faculty as

well. Doctoral students begin to socialize into higher education and academic

careers during doctoral education.

Socialization skills

According to Elliot and Peabody (2016) basic social skills such as

taking turns, listening and simply being nice are just as important to children’s

academic success as the subjects they study, and that students can and

should be learning these skills in the classroom. If we increase social skills,

10
IMPROVING THE SOCIALIZATION SKILLS OF GRADE 12 HUMSS STUDENTS THROUGH SOCIAL AWARENESS PROGRAM

LEMERY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

we see commensurate increases in academic learning. That doesn’t mean

that social skills make you smarter; it means that these skills make you more

amenable to learning.

Level of Social Awareness

Social Awareness

As explained by Larroca (2017) social Awareness is the ability

to take the perspective of and empathize with others from diverse

backgrounds and cultures, to understand social and ethical norms for

behavior, and to recognize family, school, and community resources and

supports. Social awareness is a crucial component of appropriate classroom

behavior, which contributes to an environment conducive to learning. Social

awareness is also widely established as an important factor in workforce

success.

Difficulties of students in socializing

According to the study of Patino (2014) Making friends and fitting

in is an important part of a child’s life. It can be challenging at times, too. But if

connecting with others is a constant struggle for a child, it could be a sign of

learning and attention issues.Trouble with social skills may not be that

obvious in early childhood, depending on the cause, such as noticing that a

student doesn’t seem to get and understand when others look or sound

annoyed and maybe a student responds inappropriately in conversations.

Synthesis

The literature and studies related to the topic impose ideas that are

almost the same. Specifically Arnett (2015), Horton and Hunt (2011) and

Prout et al., (2015), stated that socialization means preparing people to

participate in social group which individuals adopt language, culture, norms,

values, knowledge, beliefs and attitude. It also molds and develop the

personality of a student. But Prout et al., explained that parents affect a child

personality a lot. Parents are the source of social indemnity of their children.

While Arnett specified that Socialization is culturally specific, but this does not

mean certain cultures are better or worse than others. Prout et al., explained

that parents affect a child personality a lot. Parents are the source of social

indemnity of their children.

The skills we use to communicate and interact with each other, both

verbally and non-verbally, this is vital in enabling an individual to have and

maintain positive interactions with others. Many of these skills are crucial in

making and sustaining friendships these skills are called socialization skills or

social skills, these are according to Eden (2011) and Unley (2017). While

Elliot and Peabody (2016) claimed that basic social skills such as taking turns,

listening and simply being nice are just as important to children’s academic

success as the subjects they study, and that students can and should be

learning these skills in the classroom.

12

LEMERY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Another related literatures and studies are from Airth (2018),

Goleman (2015), Lakhiani (2019) and Larroca (2017). They stated that Social

Awareness means being socially aware relates to being aware of your

environment, what's around you, as well as being able to accurately interpret

the emotions of people with whom you interact. Or commonly known as

Empathy. It is just about understanding each other and as a social beings,

humans should know how to accept differences and diversity to fit in.

Bailey (2015), Andrysczyk (2018) and Patino (2014) discussed

different difficulties of students in socializing with others. Bailey believes that

that there are students might be distracted by too much socializing, and there

are children that mingles mostly in their age group which is considered a

drawback by some. While Andrysczyk (2018) ) said that some people are

socially awkward no matter what educational setting they choose. She also

added that the personal experiences of students can affect the level of

difficulty of students in socializing such as Depression, Chronical Illness and

Trust issues. For Patino (2014) Trouble with social skills may not be that

obvious in early childhood, depending on the cause, such as noticing that a

student doesn’t seem to get and understand when others look or sound

annoyed.

Definition of terms

Attitude

-attitude is a dispositional readiness to respond to certain

institutions, persons or objects in a consistent manner which has been

learned and has become one’s typical mode of response, Freeman (2017).

-In this study, it is defined as one of the factors affecting the

socialozation of a student. This includes the personality of the student in

terms of emotions or feelings.

Behavior

-it is consists of an organism's external reactions to its

environment. Other aspects of psychology, such as emotions, thoughts, and

other internal mental processes, don't usually fall under the category of

behavior. Behavior may be modified according to positive or negative

reinforcements from the organism's environment or according to self-directed

intentions, Frye (2018).

-In this study, this term refers to the way of the student in

responding to different situations in life.

14

LEMERY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Communication Skills

-Good communication skills will help you get hired, land

promotions, and be a success throughout your career. Listening, Nonverbal

Communication, Clarity and Concision, Friendliness and Confidence are the

different communication skills according to Doyle (2018).

-In this study, this term means as the skills used by the students to

be more communicative with other students. These are skills that helps

students to easily understand each other when talking with each other.

Depression

-Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious

medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and

how you act. Fortunately, it is also treatable. Depression causes feelings of

sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. It can lead to a

variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease a person’s

ability to function at work and at home. This is based on Parekh (2017).

-In this study, this is defined as one of the reason why is it difficult

for the student to socialize with others. It may include different personal

problems and experiences.

15
IMPROVING THE SOCIALIZATION SKILLS OF GRADE 12 HUMSS STUDENTS THROUGH SOCIAL AWARENESS PROGRAM

LEMERY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Emotional Intelligence

-Emotional intelligence refers to the ability to identify and manage

one’s own emotions, as well as the emotions of others. Emotional intelligence

is generally said to include at least three skills: emotional awareness, or the

ability to identify and name one’s own emotions; the ability to harness those

emotions and apply them to tasks like thinking and problem solving; and the

ability to manage emotions, which includes both regulating one’s own

emotions when necessary and helping others to do the same, Ekman (2019).

-In this study, this term means on how students control and

manage their emotions during different scenarios and situations.

Ethical norms

-The term ethical norms refers to behaviors we as a society

expect from society at large. While some ethics and morals do fall under the

purview of law, most do not. Where ethical standards do overlap with legal

standards is where concern for fundamental rights comes into play with

regard to ethical norms (Harman 2014).

-In this study, this is defined as standardized ways of conduct and

behavior in a society, company, or other organization. Set of rules and

guidelines about what is right and wronh.

16
IMPROVING THE SOCIALIZATION SKILLS OF GRADE 12 HUMSS STUDENTS THROUGH SOCIAL AWARENESS PROGRAM

LEMERY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Interpersonal skills

-Interpersonal skills cannot be learned solely from a textbook.

They come naturally to some people, while other people have to work at

cultivating them and these are the qualities and behaviors a person uses to

interact with others properly, (Lim 2019).

-In this study, this refers to the skills that are used to interact

with others. Skills that helps everyone to have a better relationship with

others.

Introvert

-An introvert is often thought of as a quiet, reserved, and

thoughtful individual. They don’t seek out special attention or social

engagements, as these events can leave introverts feeling exhausted and

drained, Legg (2018).

-In this study, this is defined as a case where in students do not

really socializing with others. Students who have this, prefers to be alone

rather than having with others.

Language

-more specifically human language, refers to the grammar and

other rules and norms that allow humans to make utterances and sounds in a

way that others can understand, Nordquist (2019).

17
IMPROVING THE SOCIALIZATION SKILLS OF GRADE 12 HUMSS STUDENTS THROUGH SOCIAL AWARENESS PROGRAM

LEMERY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

-In this study, this is defined as a medium of communication and

it can also be a factor affecting the socialization of students like students may

have a confloct when they are not aware with the language use by the other

students.

Socialization Skills

-Social skills are about being able to flexibly adjust our behavior

to fit a particular situation and our personal needs and desires. Also refers as

the abilities necessary to get along with others and to create and maintain

satisfying relationships, Moore (2011).

-In this study, this simply means as the skills which are very

important in building the relationship of each students with each other.

Socialization skills talks about the ability of students to socialize with different

people around them.

Society

-Society is made up of individuals who have agreed to work

together for mutual benefit. It can be a very broad term, as we can make

generalizations about what the whole of Western society believes, or it can be

a very narrow definition, describing only a small group of people within a given

community, Edmonds (2019).

18
IMPROVING THE SOCIALIZATION SKILLS OF GRADE 12 HUMSS STUDENTS THROUGH SOCIAL AWARENESS PROGRAM

LEMERY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

-In this study. this refers to a group of individuals involved in

persistent social interaction, or a large social group sharing the same

geographical or social territory, typically subject to the same political authority

and dominant cultural expectations.

RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES

This chapter presents the different methods and procedures

used by the researchers in doing the investigation. It consists of the research

design, research environment and the subjects. This also includes the

research instrument used in data gathering procedure, as well as the

statistical tools used in processing and analyzing the data.

Research Design

Research is process that is the step combination that is

donesystematically and logically to get the solution of the problems or to get

theanswer from the certain question (Suryabarata : 2003).

The researchers chooses a quantitative descriptive research design

because the researcher wants to elaborate, describe and explain how to

improve the socialization skills of Grade 12 HUMSS students through Social

Awareness Program. Accroding to McCombes (2019) Descriptive research

aims to accurately and systematically describe a population, situation or

phenomenon. It can answer what, when, where, when and how

questions.Descriptive research is an appropriate choice when the research

aim is to identify characteristics, frequencies, trends, correlations, and

categories.

Research Environment

The researchers study was conducted at Lemery Senior High School

wherein the respondents are the selected Grade 12 HUMSS students.

Research Instrument

The instruments used in this research study were researchers made

questionnaire because it is an efficient way of obtaining large amounts of

information from a large sample of people.

Questionnaire is a research instrument consisting of a series of

questions for the purpose of gathering information from

respondents.Questionnaire studies can be used in the systematic collection of

information and may help to define the incidence of disease, identify

etiological factors and investigate quality of life, as well as predict some

aspects of behavior.. Despite these possibilities, only limited interest has been

shown by the medical profession in the further development of this

methodology. With appropriate attention, questionnaires can provide reliable

information. In addition, the researchers' questionnaire was checked twice

before the questions were validated.

Interview, we used this as a research instrument consisting of a

series of questions for the purposes of gathering information from the

respondents. The researchers asked questions to the interviewee or the

respondents about the topic.

22
IMPROVING THE SOCIALIZATION SKILLS OF GRADE 12 HUMSS STUDENTS THROUGH SOCIAL AWARENESS PROGRAM

LEMERY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Observation, we used this as a research instrument to gather some

information to our respondents and thrir environment. In observation only the

absence or presence of a property is noted and if a numerical value is

attached to the observed phenomenon by counting or measuring

Research Sampling

Sampling essentially involves a system of selecting a population

representation from the general population depending on the objective of the

study, availability of money, time and effort in gathering research data (David

2005 and Mercado 2006).

The researchers made use of simple or pure random sampling, in this

case each individual is chosen entirely by chance and each member of the

population has an equal chance, or probability, of being selected. One way of

obtaining a random sample is to give each individual in a population a

number, and then use a table of random numbers to decide which individuals

to include.

As with all probability sampling methods, simple random sampling

allows the sampling error to be calculated and reduces selection bias. A

specific advantage is that it is the most straightforward method of probability

sampling.

Slovin's Formula

24
IMPROVING THE SOCIALIZATION SKILLS OF GRADE 12 HUMSS STUDENTS THROUGH SOCIAL AWARENESS PROGRAM

LEMERY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

The technique used to calculate the sample size given the population

size and the margin of error. It is random sampling technique formula to

estimate the sampling size of a certain study.

n= N/1+Ne²

Where: N=Population

n=Sample

e=Margin of error

The method presented above is the slovin's formula where it is used

for studies involving large population to estimate sample size. The total

population of the study (N) is 316, the margin of error (e) used is 5% or 0.05

therefore, the sample size (n) is 177 respondents. From the 316 population of

Humanities and Social Sciences there are total of 177 respondents that will be

answer the survey questionnaires.

Data Gathering Procedure

This research started gathering data and information through various

written materials like books, journals, and unpublished materials that relevant

to the research topic. The researchers also prepared a survey questionnaire

to collect information from the repondents about the research topic. And a

letter was presented to the research adviser before gathering data to the

repondents. There was also a validator who validated the prepared survey

questionnaire.

25
IMPROVING THE SOCIALIZATION SKILLS OF GRADE 12 HUMSS STUDENTS THROUGH SOCIAL AWARENESS PROGRAM

LEMERY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

In the collection of data, the respondents were handed a self

administered questionnaire which they answer it honestly. After accomplishing

all the answers, the data gathered were tabulated and analyzed.

Statistical Treatment of Data

After collecting the data needed, the researchers carefully analyzed

the gathered information with the help of statistical tools. The researchers will

employ the following statistical treatment with their corresponding formula to

interpret efficiently.

1. To calculate the sample size given the population size which is needed for

the study. The slovin's formula was used.

2. In calculating the percentage to know the exact number of the random

respondents each section, the given formula was used.

As mentioned by Airth (2018), social awareness is the ability to

comprehend and appropriately react to both broad problems of society and

interpersonal struggles. This means that being socially aware relates to being

aware of your environment, what's around you, as well as being able to

accurately interpret the emotions of people with whom you interact. In the

Environment we live in, we really need to be aware in every events and

different situation around us. There is diversity on us but we should

understand and accept each other through our social awareness.

Lakhiani (2019) said that Humans are social beings. Without social

awareness, we simply won’t fit into any society. So, as we are living in a

society, we all must have a certain amount of knowledge on social awareness

definition. This states that we should really know what social awareness is for

us to have a good communication and social life with our friends. And

ofcourse this has something to do about being sensitive in our actions and

choice of words. We should always remember to be socially aware so that we

could fit in to the society we have.

Goleman (2015) stated that the competencies associated with being

socially aware are Empathy, Organizational Awareness and Service. He also

said that social awareness is the ability to understand and respond to the

needs of others. This is the third of the domains of emotional intelligence.

Awareness of social situations means you carefully consider what people

want, and plan to communicate with them in a way that is intended to meet

that need.

Bailey, Andrysczyk (2018) said that some people are socially

awkward. No matter what educational setting they choose. Just getting out of

the house can be exhausting. Some days are hard. Sometimes just getting

out of bed or getting dressed is all some of us can manage. Introverts,

Depression and Chronical Illness can be considered as the causes of these

difficulties. She also said the trust issues of students, maybe they have trust

issues. Maybe they’ve been hurt before. It’s hard to trust again. It’s hard to

give others the benefit of the doubt. Or give another chance after a conflict.

It’s easier and safer to close yourself off, she added.

Bailey (2015) stated that there are students might be distracted by

too much socializing, and there are children that mingle mostly in their age

group which is considered a drawback by some. Some fear a humanistic

agenda in public schools which conflicts with certain religious beliefs, bullying

during socialization can have a long term negative effect on children, student

silence for most of the day including lunch breaks and children spend too

much time online and not enough time with face-to-face contacts she added
