The passage discusses using social media cartoons to analyze societal addiction to social media and technology. It provides suggestions for finding, sharing, and analyzing cartoons on this theme in the classroom.

The cartoons are intended to comment on and bring awareness to society's increasing addiction to social media and technology. They are analyzed by students to understand the message and perspective of the artist.

Students are given a cartoon and analysis worksheet. They describe the cartoon's message, intended audience, symbols, and whether they agree with the message. Then they share their analysis with another group.

Social media addiction

Cartoon Analysis
Due to copyright I am unable to provide copies of the social media
cartoons I have used in my classroom. However, a quick Google search
using the term “social media addiction cartoon” will yield some fantastic
results. Another helpful platform to search on is Pinterest.

Here’s a website I like to use - https://www.boredpanda.com/satirical-

illustrations-addiction-technology/ Be sure to preview all cartoons before
sharing with students as some may not be appropriate for all grades.

Lesson Ideas
I selected 30 different cartoons all on the theme of “social media addiction”. I printed
out the cartoons and then laminated them. (I managed to print the cartoons four to a
page.) I showed several to the students on the classroom projector and we discussed
at length the message of each cartoon using the graphic organizer as a basis for our
discussion.

After showing the class an example, I gave pairs of students a cartoon and a copy of
the graphic organizer. With their partner they each completed a graphic organizer.
Each partner group then had to share their cartoon and analysis with another partner
group.

As an extension you could ask students to create their own cartoon to comment on
our society’s addiction to social media. Students could also find their own examples
online – there are so many to choose from!
