Dr Stella Pachidi from Cambridge Judge Business School believes that some of the most
fundamental changes are happening as a result of the 'algorithmication ' of jobs that are
dependent on data rather than on production the so-called knowledge economy. Algorithms are
capable of learning Rom data to undertake tasks that previously needed human judgement,
such as reading legal contracts, analysing medical scans and gathering market intelligence.
'In many cases, they can outperform humans,' says Pachidi. 'Organisations are attracted to
using algorithms because they want to make choices based on what they consider is "perfect
information", as well as to reduce costs and enhance productivity.'
'But these enhancements are not without consequences,' says Pachidi. 'If routine cognitive tasks
are taken over by AI, how do professions develop their future experts?' she asks. 'One way of
learning about a job is "legitimate peripheral participation" a novice stands next to experts and
learns by observation. If this isn't happening, then you need to find new ways to leam.'
Another issue is the extent to which the technology influences or even controls the workforce.
For over two years, Pachidi monitored a telecommunications company. 'The way telecoms
salespeople work is through personal and frequent contact with clients, using the benefit of
experience to assess a situation and reach a decision. However, the company had started using
a[n] … algorithm that defined when account managers should contact certain customers about
which kinds of campaigns and what to offer them.'
The algorithm - usually built by external designers - often becomes the keeper of knowledge,
she explains. In cases like this, Pachidi believes, a short-sighted view begins to creep into
working practices whereby workers learn through the 'algorithm's eyes' and become dependent
on its instructions. Alternative explorations - where experimentation and human instinct lead
to progress and new ideas are effectively discouraged.
Pachidi and colleagues even observed people developing strategies to make the algorithm work
to their own advantage. ‘We are seeing cases where workers feed the algorithm with false data
to reach their targets,’ she reports.
It's scenarios like these that many researchers are working to avoid. Their objective is to make
AI technologies more trustworthy and transparent, so that organisations and individuals
understand how AI decisions are made. In the meantime, says Pachidi, 'We need to make sure
we fully understand the dilemmas that this new world raises regarding expertise, occupational
boundaries and control.'
Economist Professor Hamish Low believes that the future of work will involve major transitions
across the whole life course for everyone: 'The traditional trajectory of full-time education
followed by full-time work followed by a pensioned retirement is a thing of the past,' says Low.
Instead, he envisages a multistage employment life: one where retraining happens across the
life course, and where multiple jobs and no job happen by choice at different stages.
On the subject of job losses, Low believes the predictions are founded on a fallacy: 'It assumes
that the number of jobs is fixed. In 30 years, half of 100 jobs are being carried out by robots,
that doesn't mean we are left with just 50 jobs for humans. The number of jobs will increase:
we would expect there to be 150 jobs.'
Dr Ewan McGaughey, at Cambridge's Centre for Business Research and King's College London,
agrees that 'apocalyptic' views about the future of work are misguided. 'It's the laws that
restrict the supply of capital to the job market, not the advent of new technologies that causes
unemployment.'
His recently published research answers the question of whether automation, AI and robotics
will mean a 'jobless future' by looking at the causes of unemployment. 'History is clear that
change can mean redundancies. But social policies can tackle this through retraining and
redeployment.'
He adds: 'If there is going to be change to jobs as a result of AI and robotics then I'd like to see
governments seizing the opportunity to improve policy to enforce good job security. We can
“reprogramme” the law to prepare for a fairer future of work and leisure.’ McGaughey’s
findings are a call to arms to leaders of organisations, governments and banks to pre-empt the
coming changes with bold new policies that guarantee full employment, fair incomes and a
thriving economic democracy.
'The promises of these new technologies are astounding. They deliver humankind the capacity
to live in a way that nobody could have once imagined,' he adds. 'Just as the industrial
revolution brought people past subsistence agriculture, and the corporate revolution enabled
mass production, a third revolution has been pronounced. But it will not only be one of
technology. The next revolution will be social.'

How to make wise decisions

Across cultures, wisdom has been considered one of the most revered human qualities. Although the
truly wise may seem few and far between, empirical research examining wisdom suggests that it isn't an
exceptional trait possessed by a small handful of bearded philosophers after all - in fact, the latest studies
suggest that most of us have the ability to make wise decisions, given the right context.

'It appears that experiential, situational, and cultural factors are even more powerful in shaping wisdom
than previously imagined ' says Associate Professor Igor Grossmann of the University of Waterloo in
Ontario, Canada. 'Recent empirical findings from cognitive, developmental, social, and personality
psychology cumulatively suggest that people's ability to reason wisely varies dramatically across
experiential and situational contexts. Understanding the role of such contextual factors overs unique
insights into understanding wisdom in daily life, as well as how it can be enhanced and taught.'

It seems that it's not so much that some people simply possess wisdom and others lack it, but
that our ability to reason wisely depends on a variety of external factors. 'It is impossible to
characterize thought processes attributed to wisdom without considering the role of contextual
factors,' explains Grossmann. 'In other words, wisdom is not solely an "inner quality" but rather
unfolds as a function of situations people happen to be in. Some situations are more likely to
promote wisdom than others.'

Coming up with a definition of wisdom is challenging, but Grossmann and his colleagues have
identified four key characteristics as part of a framework of wise reasoning. One is intellectual humility
or recognition of the limits of our own knowledge, and another is appreciation of perspectives wider
than the issue at hand. Sensitivity to the possibility of change in social relations is also key, along with
compromise or integration of different attitudes and beliefs.

Grossmann and his colleagues have also found that one of the most reliable ways to support
wisdom in our own day-to-day decisions is to look at scenarios from a third-party perspective, as
though giving advice to a fiend. Research suggests that when adopting a first-person viewpoint
we focus on 'the focal features of the environment' and when we adopt a third-person, 'observer '
viewpoint we reason more broadly and focus more on interpersonal and moral ideals such as
justice and impartiality. Looking at problems from this more expansive viewpoint appears to
foster cognitive processes related to wise decisions.

What are we to do, then, when confronted with situations like a disagreement with a spouse or
negotiating a contract at work, that require us to take a personal stake? Grossmann argues that
even when we aren't able to change the situation, we can still evaluate these experiences Rom
different perspectives.

For example, in one experiment that took place during the peak of a recent economic recession,
graduating college seniors were asked to reflect on their job prospects. The students were
instructed to imagine their career either 'as if you were a distant observer' or 'before your own
eyes as if you were right there’. Participants in the group assigned to the 'distant observer' role
displayed more wisdom-related reasoning (intellectual humility and recognition of change) than
did participants in the control group.

In another study, couples in long-term romantic relationships were instructed to visualize
an unresolved relationship conflict either through the eyes of an outsider or from their own
perspective. Participants then discussed the incident with their partner for 10 minutes, after which
they wrote down their thoughts about it. Couples in the 'other's eyes' condition were significantly
more likely to rely on wise reasoning - recognizing others' perspectives and searching for a
compromise- compared to the couples in the egocentric condition.
'Ego-decentering promotes greater focus on others and enables a bigger picture, conceptual view
of the experience, affording recognition of intellectual humility and change,' says Grossmann.

We might associate wisdom with intelligence or particular personality traits, but research shows
only a small positive relationship between wise thinking and crystallized intelligence and the
personality traits of openness and agreeableness. 'It is remarkable how much people can vary in
their wisdom from one situation to the next, and how much stronger such contextual effects are
far understanding the relationship between wise judgment and its social and a6bctive outcomes as
compared to the generalized "traits",' Grossmann explains. 'That is, knowing how wisely a person
behaves in a given situation is more informative for understanding their emotions or likelihood to
forgive [or] retaliate as compared to knowing whether the person may be wise "in general".'

Posted by John Titor on 27-01-2001 2.45 p.m.: ‘Greetings. I am a time traveller from the year
2036. I am on my way home after getting an IBM 5100 computer system from the year 1975.’
This is the message that appeared on an Internet forum in January 2001. Just a joke, you might
assume, or a hoax. But more posts followed, and there was something about John Titor and his
messages that made people sit up and take notice. Perhaps it was the amount of detail he went
into when describing where he had come from. Or maybe it was his apparent willingness to
answer questions about - and even post photographs of - his time-travelling equipment, the so-
called ‘temporal displacement unit.’

Over the next few months, John Titor regularly joined internet discussions and answered
questions. The insights that he gave into the era he claimed to have come from were
tantalizing. He described a world in which globalization had been halted because of wars and
civil unrest. Now people lived in small, close-knit communities. Food was grown locally, and
people spent time reading and chatting face-to-face - although the internet still existed. He
even revealed how the people of 2001 would be judged by those living in 2036, and it wasn't
flattering. ‘This time period’; he wrote, referring to the year 2000, ‘is looked at as being full of
lazy, self-centred sheep.’

Even though Titor claimed not to care whether people believed his story or not, he started
to gather an increasing number of followers on the internet. At one point, he even suggested
that a few volunteers could go with him on his travels through time. The plan was first to go
back in time to 1975. The volunteers could either choose to stay in that year or accompany him
on the next leg of the journey - forwards to 2036. He warned that the physical experience of
time travel was not pleasant: travellers have to put up with hot, airless conditions and
uncomfortable G-forces.

One fascinating detail in John Titor's messages convinced many people that he was telling the
truth. When he was asked why he needed an IBM 5100 computed he explained that this
computer had a feature that few people knew about: the ability to run very old programming
languages. This feature would allow scientists in 2036 to 'clean up ' some very old computer
systems that modern programmers could no longer understand. Amazingly, an engineer who
helped design the IBM 5100 confirmed that the computer did indeed have this feature, and
that, for commercial reasons, it had not been made public. If John Titor was a hoaxer, he was
seemingly very well informed.

The messages continued to appear for several months and some of them purported to contain
information about what the near future held in They talked of a major civil war in the USA
which would lead to the 2004 Olympic Games being cancelled. They referred to a small-scale
nuclear conflict between Russia and the USA, as well as a serious epidemic that would spread
like wildfire across the Western world. And they described the American president in 2005 as
being like Abraham Lincoln.

But the trouble with predictions is that they have a habit of not coming true. The year 2004
came and went and the Olympic Games were not cancelled. Russia and the USA did not go to
war and George Bush did not seem much like Abraham Lincoln. The attention given to John
Titor and his messages began to wane, as did interest in the John Titor Foundation, a
commercial enterprise that sold books and merchandise related to the supposed time traveller.

A few years later, several attempts were made to find out who was behind the John Titor
messages. A website called Hoax Hunter carried out an investigation and named two brothers
as the likely culprits: Larry Haber and John Rick Haber. A separate investigation by a private
detective also identified John Rick Haber as the man behind the messages, claiming that his
knowledge of computer science would have allowed him to make them convincing. It was also
revealed that Larry Haber was the CEO of the John Timor Foundation, so on the face of it he
stood to make money out of the alleged hoax.

It seems like an open-and-shut case. However, for people who believe that John Titor truly is a
time traveller, there was a get-out clause. In some of his messages ,Titor explained that by
travelling back in time, he had altered the future. What is more, the longer he stayed in the
'wrong' time, the greater the divergence would become. So the reason why his predictions were
ostensibly incorrect was that our world was following a different 'timeline ' owing to his
interference. In other words, perhaps the fact that there was no Second Civil War in the USA in
2004 is mainly thanks to John Titor and his travels through time.

A. The Mountain
Just a stone's throw from New York City lies a former iron-ore mine which has been converted
into a heavily guarded storage facility known as The Mountain. Inside are the records of some
of the largest and most influential companies in the USA. Purchased originally for growing
mushrooms, the mine acquired its current function during the Cold War, when owner Herman
Knaust realised its potential for protecting corporate information from nuclear attack and
founded the company Iron Mountain Atomic Storage Inc. Apart from vital business records, The
Mountain has housed art collections, valuable antiques and celebrity memorabilia in its 225
individually locked vaults, and today it is the premium storage location for the company now
known as Iron Mountain Inc.
D Area 51
Just over 160 km north of Las Vegas is an air base in the middle of the desert whose existence
was not officially acknowledged until 2013. Known as Area 51, the facility is a top-secret US
military installation which remained hidden for decades thanks to map-makers leaving it out
and satellite imagery of the area being routinely deleted from government databases. It is
understood that the base is the site at which the latest spy planes are developed and tested,
giving rise to a number of reported sightings of UFOs over the years. These accounts have
generally been attributed to the fact that witnesses were unaccustomed to seeing the
lights of planes flying at such high altitudes as the ones being tested, but there are some who
would strongly contest this justification.

Back at the reef, there is a rigid hierarchy among the half dozen or so clownfish that occupy
each host anemone. At the top of the group is the largest fish, the dominant female, and next in
line is the dominant male. When the female dies, a startling transformation takes place: the
dominant male gets larger and changes sex, replacing its deceased partner as the dominant
female.

However, finding a home on the reef is easier said than done. Not only do the larvae have to
dodge predatory fish in search of their next meal, but they also face rejection from their own
kind if they approach the wrong anemone. Clownfish are extremely protective of their group
and will chase off other clownfish that don’t fit into their hierarchy.

Although highly poisonous, these waving arms that move with the ocean currents do not seem
to affect the clownfish. Apparently, the fish manage to avoid the toxin by rubbing against the
anemone, covering themselves in its mucus. This coating seems to trick the anemone into
thinking the fish is part of the anemone, allowing the clownfish to shelter inside.

But this is not the only service they provide. Scientists have recently found that the clownfish is
much more valuable to the anemone than it was previously thought.

To understand this phenomenon, the team decided to film the behaviour of the clownfish
within the anemone. What they witnessed left them stunned. At regular intervals, the clownfish
would perform what appeared to be a kind of dance, flapping its fins while darting from one
side to another. This caused the anemone to fill out and increase in size.

These findings highlight the profound importance of this symbiotic relationship for the sea
anemone as well as for the clownfish. It has long been known that the clownfish would be lost
without its anemone home, but now we are also aware that the anemone would be doomed
without the clownfish.
Paragraph A:
In exchange for this protection, the clownfish performs a series of functions beneficial to the
anemone. The first of these is to scare off its greatest predator: the butterfly fish, which eats sea
anemones. The clownfish does this by emitting a high-pitched sound that deters the butterfly
fish from approaching.
Paragraph B:
This movement up the hierarchical ladder affects every member of the group. A fish only gets
bigger when a larger fish above it dies. When the dominant male replaces the female, the next-
largest fish grows larger to occupy its place, and so on, until there is a vacancy at the bottom of
the ladder for a tiny post-larva returning from the ocean surface.

The researchers concluded that through its ‘dance’, the clownfish was helping the anemone to
breathe. The fish's frenetic movements move the water around the stationary anemone,
providing it with more oxygen, helping to speed up its metabolism, and enabling it to grow
faster.
Paragraph D:
Scientists have found sea anemones in all of the world's oceans. Related closely to coral and
jellyfish, their bodies are hollow columns with a mouth and stinging tentacles at the top. They
mostly live attached to rocks on the sea bed or on coral reefs, waiting for small fish and other
prey to swim close enough to become trapped.
Paragraph E:
Those larvae that fail to find a place in a host anemone will not survive. Clownfish need the
anemone's protection because, although they are quite small, their neon colours make them
highly conspicuous. Moreover, they cannot swim very fast, so they are easy prey for larger
predators, such as grouper or barracuda. Among the tentacles or the anemone, they find refuge.

The discovery was made by a team of marine biologists from Auburn University, Alabama, who
were studying the amount of oxygen the clownfish and the anemone used, both individually
and together. In the course of their research, they found that the two species used up far more
oxygen when they were in contact with each other than either could use on its own.

The fish's life begins when it hatches from the miniscule egg laid by its mother on the coral
near the anemone she inhabits with her group. Remarkably, all clownfish larvae are male. As
soon as a batch of larvae hatches, they all leave the reef and head for the ocean surface, where

anemones.

Paragraph 1:
As our species evolved, parts of our brain expanded, resulting in more computing power for
language. It's what makes us hard-wired for communication. What is perhaps more surprising is
how language can shape our brains throughout our lives. Most of the evidence for this comes
from studies of people who are bilingual. Brain scan studies show that switching between two
languages triggers different patterns of brain activity compared with speaking in one language,
particularly in the prefrontal cortex. That part of the brain, at the very front of our skulls, is
involved in organising and acting on information, including using memory, reasoning and
planning. Other studies show that people who are bilingual are faster at getting to grips with a
new language.
Paragraph 2:
It may also make the brain more resilient. Ellen Bialystok at York University in Toronto,
Canada, has found that lifelong bilinguals tend to be diagnosed with dementia on average 4.5
years later than monolinguals, and have more cerebral white matter, including in their
prefrontal cortex. White matter is made of nerve fibres that connect different brain regions,
shuttling information back and forth between them. So boosting language skills appears to
build more connected brains - although Bialystok cautions that this still needs to be confirmed.
More evidence for the benefits of speaking a second language came last year from a study of
608 people who had had a stroke. Thomas Bak of the University of Edinburgh found that of the
bilinguals among them, 40% recovered fully, compared with only 20% of monolinguals. Bak
conjectures that the mental gymnastics involved in speaking several languages could build
extra connections that improve function and help cope with damage. 'The idea is that if you
have a lot of mental exercise, your brain is trained and can compensate better,' says Bak.

Time flows from back to front for English speakers: we 'cast our minds back ' to the 1990s, and
‘hope for good times ahead’. It's an example of a cultural concept encoded in language, but can
language in turn influence how we think? Maria Sera is a native Spanish speaker who grew up
believing all squirrels were female. The Spanish word for squirrel, ‘ardilla’, is feminine. As a
linguist at the University of Minnesota, she has found some substance for her childhood belief.
Studies of French anti Spanish speakers, whose languages attribute genders to objects, suggest
they associate those objects with masculine or feminine properties.
Paragraph 4:
The idea that the language you speak could influence how you think dates back to 1940, when
linguist Benjamin Lee Whorf proposed that people whose languages lack words for a concept
would not understand it. It was relegated to fringe science until the early 2000s, when a few
people began probing a related but more nuanced idea: that language can influence perception.
Greek, for instance, has two words for blue – ‘galázio’ for light blue and ‘ble’ for a darker
shade. A study found that Greek speakers could discriminate shades of blue faster and better
than native English speakers.
Paragraph 5:
Language even seems to affect our sense of space and time. For example, one Aboriginal tribe
in the north of Australia doesn't have words for relative space, like left and right, but does have
terms for north, south, east and west. Studies have shown that they tend to be unusually skilled
at keeping track of where they are in unfamiliar places. There is also some evidence that the
direction in which your first language is written can influence your sense of time, with speakers
of Mandarin more likely to think of time running from top to bottom (with earlier events at
the top) than English speakers. More generally, language helps us understand the world by
allowing us to categorise things. Children are better at grouping objects if they have already
learned the names of the categories they belong to. Conversely, after a stroke, people who have
lost language skills can have trouble grouping objects. ‘It's not that language just affects the
high-level reasoning part of the brain,’ says Gary Lupyan of the University of Wisconsin-
Madison. ‘It's changing our basic perceptual representations.’

Money can't buy happiness, or so the saying goes, and there are certainly pros and cons to
being rich. But by and large, people from wealthy backgrounds have easier lives than
people who are born and bred in poverty. For example, Haruki (not his real name) enjoyed the
benefit of private tutors and a university education, all part and parcel of growing up in
an affluent family. Now, at the age of sixty, he is head of a successful property company. In
contrast, Katashi (also a pseudonym) experienced far more ups and downs during his early
years. His father died when he was two, and although his mother supported Katashi and his
brothers through thick and thin, they had very little money. Katashi was obliged to do shift
work here and there in order to pay for night school, eventually finding a job as a driver.
Neither Haruki nor Katashi knew the shocking truth: that they had been swapped at birth in a
hospital mix-up. Sooner or later, however, it was bound to emerge. It was Haruki's brothers
who first requested a DNA test, but Katashi who sued the hospital for damages. The ins and
outs of the case are complex, but basically, once the DNA evidence was available, the result

A. Walt Disney
There are few people who have had as enormous an impact on our culture and
entertainment as Walt Disney. As the founder of Walt Disney Studios, he was an artist who
changed animation and film-making for ever. But the road to this kind of success and influence
wasn’t easy. At the age of ten, Walt had to help at his father’s business before and after school;
that meant getting up at 4.30 a.m. and working until the school bell rang. After school, he
worked until dinner time. As a result, his school work suffered and he often fell asleep at his
desk. A high school drop-out at sixteen, he attempted to join the army but they turned him
down. So he focused on developing his artistic talents and learning about a new art form called
animation. He moved to Hollywood and, unable to find work, decided to found his own studio.
Success followed.
Despite, or because of, his lack of formal education, Disney never stopped learning. He
showed that it’s possible to be successful despite following a different path. He even came to
regard his many setbacks in a positive light by saying: “All the adversity I’ve had in my life, all
my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me … You may not realise it when it happens,
but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you.’
B. Oprah Winfrey
Oprah Winfrey was born to a single teenage mother who was working as a housemaid
in rural Mississippi. She lived in poverty and suffered abuse for years. This does not sound like
the beginnings of a media mogul who would go on to own a cable TV network and become one
of America’s most influential people and the first African-American billionaire, and yet it is.
In fact, Oprah had to overcome many obstacles before achieving the success she enjoys
today. Her upbringing was on a small farm in Mississippi where she was regularly beaten by
her strict grandmother. At six years old, Oprah went to live with her mother in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin. Since her mother worked long hours as a maid, Oprah was neglected. She suffered
so much abuse at the hands of various relatives that at the age of thirteen she became a
runaway. By fourteen, she was pregnant; the baby died shortly after birth.
The turnaround came when she moved in with her father in Tennessee. He set her on
the right track by making education a high priority. She began attending Nashville East High
School, where she took public speaking and drama classes. She received a full scholarship to
Tennessee State University after winning a public-speaking contest. A few years after
graduating, she took the job as host of A.M Chicago, which became the highest-rated talk show
in Chicago and was renamed ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’.
C. Stephen Hawking
Stephen Hawking was 21 years old and just embarking upon his career as a researcher
in cosmology at the University of Cambridge when his father noticed he was tripping and
falling frequently. After a series of tests, Hawking was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic
Lateral Sclerosis) and doctors estimated he had two and a half years left to live. The news was,
of course, devastating, but Hawking avoided an emotional breakdown by taking new interest in
his studies and his research. ‘In fact,’ Hawking has said, ‘although there was a cloud hanging
over my future, I found, to my surprise, that I was enjoying life in the present more than
before.’
His disease continued to progress, however, and by the mid-190s he needed more care
and his speech was so slurred only his family could understand him. In 1985, Hawking came
down with pneumonia and needed a tracheotomy, which left him without the ability to speak
at all. He did make a full recovery, however, allowing him to finish writing ‘A Brief History of
Time’, which sold 10 million copies around the world.
Although it would be easy to dwell on what ALS has cost him, Hawking has chosen to
focus on all that he still has in life. His brilliant mind remains unaffected by the disease and as
a result Hawking has made significant breakthroughs in his field and has received twelve
honorary degrees, as well as multiple awards, medals and prizes. He has even appeared on a
number of television shows, including ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’, ‘The Simpsons’ and ‘The
Big Bang Theory’.
D. Jay Z
The American rapper Jay Z, whose real name is Shawn Corey Carter, is one of the
richest and most successful entrepreneurs in the entertainment industry. He and his wife,
Beyonce, are one of the world’s most instantly recognisable celebrity couples. But like many
other hip-hop stars, he had an inauspicious start in life. Born in New Work, he was raised in a
publicly owned housing estate called Marcy Houses in a poor neighbourhood of Brooklyn. His
father walked out on the family when Jay Z was a young child.
The details of Jay Z’s early life have emerged partly through his own lyrics, so they
should perhaps be taken with a pinch of salt. Did he really shoot his own brother in the
shoulder after a stand-off over some jewellery? Was he really really involved in drug-dealing?
Whether or not all the details of his childhood are accurate, gun crime and drug-dealing were
certainly both endemic in Marcy Houses and it would have been easy for a young man in that
environment to go off the rails. But despite all the hardships, Jay Z’s mother did her best to
provide for the family, even buying Jay Z a radio-cassette player so he could practice rapping.
Although Jay Z attended high school, he never graduated as it was clear by that stage
that his future lay in the music business. However, he struggled at the start of his career and
was unable to persuade any of the existing record labels to give him a contract. So he and a
couple of friends started their own label, Roc-A-Fella Records, and sold CDs from the back of a
car. Soon his career took off and his small, independent record label grew into a massive
business empire.
