Determine the estimated regression equation between the lengths (cm), , of newborn kittens
and their weights (g), . Data from a sample of 30 kittens are shown below. Interpret the results.

Sum ∑𝑋 =225.1 ∑𝑌 =9,789 ∑𝑋2=1,722.79 ∑𝑌2=3,418,775 ∑𝑋𝑌 =75,942.8

The values of 𝑏 and 𝑎 are obtained by substituting the sums obtained above. Thus,

225.1
𝑥̅ =
30 = 7.5033 = mean of x
9,789 = 326.3 = mean of y
𝑦̅ =30
30(75,942.8) – (225.1) (9,789)
b= = 73.7702
30 (1,722.79) – (225.1)2
a= 326.3 – 73.7702 (7.5033) = -227.2198

Thus the estimated regression equation is:

𝒚̂ = -227.2198 + 73.7702𝒙
Interpretation:
The coefficient 73.7702 is the slope of the regression line and is positive. It only means there is
a positive correlation between the length and weight. As length increases by 1 unit, weight
increases 73.7702. The coefficient -227.2198 is the y intercept. It is a value of y when x= 0.
However in this problem, a weight of -227.2198 g is meaningless.

The predicted value of y when x= 8.6 can be solved by substituting x= 8.6 in the estimated
regression, Thus, when x= 8.6.

𝒚̂ = -227.2198 + 73.7702 = -227.219 + 73.7702 (8.6) = 407.20472.
