The procedure describes the steps to delete old backup archives from an Acronis storage gateway when the backed up device is offline or deleted.

The purpose of the procedure is to obtain an agent certificate to communicate with the Acronis gateway for storage of a particular customer when the original backed up device is no longer available.

The steps involved in installing and registering the agent on a dummy device are to download the agent, generate a registration token, install and register the agent, and run a backup plan to obtain the certificate.

Overview
That procedure can be used when there is more than one device under the customer tenant, and the backup archives cannot be deleted because
the related device is offline or even deleted

Procedure

Installation and registration of agent on the dummy device

The procedure describes how to obtain the agent certificate to communicate with Acronis gateway for storage of the particular customer

Go to the dummy device (you can use one of our testing devices 01-Test Environment)
Log in to the Acronis portal (based on the Acronis instance you can go to eu8-cloud.acronis.com or us-cloud.acronis.com) with the customer
administrator account

Customer administrator credentials for eu8-cloud.acronis.com you can find in Vault

Click on the +Add button and download the agent based on the OS

Then scroll down and generate a registration token

Install and register the agent

Obtaining a certificate
The certificate is generated once the Acronis gateway is contacted by the agent for the first time, during backuping

Create and configure a simple backup plan

Run the backup plan

On the dummy device find the certificate located in %allusersprofile%\Acronis\BackupAndRecovery\OnlineBackup\Default
If there are more than one certificate file, collect the certificate without additional numbers in name (e.g. <account>.crt not <account>(2).crt)

Connection to Acronis storage gateway

Log in to the Acronis eu8-cloud.acronis.com or us-cloud.acronis.com with your user account
Find out the cloud storage address from the Management Portal web GUI
Download archive_tool from Acronis KB, unpack and place it on the dummy device
Copy obtained the certificate and rename the file into cert.ctr

Open command line as administrator

Navigate to the directory where you saved archive_io_ctl
To connect to cloud storage execute archive_io_ctl --astor <storage_address> --cert cert.crt where <storage_address> is cloud storage
address
Deleting of the affected archive files from the Acronis storage gateway
In the Acronis, management service check the backup file name which should be deleted

Navigate to the folder where the archives are located by cd 1 and list the contents of this folder ls

Remove the specific file by rm command

The file is not presented on the cloud storage anymore and occupied space is released even the file is still visible in the BACKUP STORAGE

After the usage of the archive tool in the EU instance of Acronis eu8-cloud.acronis.com, there will be a new P1 incident created in New
Radek Ops Dash DCC, so do not forget to handle it based on the procedure described here
Once the operation is done, do not forget to do a cleanup of the environment
Delete backup plan and the customer device for which the Archive tool was used
Delete backup plan and backup data in the Acronis management portal for the dummy device
Uninstall the agent from the dummy device
