including the engine’s power density and efficiency. Dual fuel Direct injection diesel
hydrogen Compressed Ignition, Positive ignition or jet ignition show better efficiencies. This
shows how changes made in the fuel and altering or combining several ideas works wonders
and in our case of opposed two piston stroke engines, gives a heads up on the choices
available.
So now comes the evolution of opposed two piston strokes engine. Car companies or
corporate Indian manufacturers for example are instructed to meet Corporate Average Fuel
Consumption standards to legally stay in the market. For light duty vehicles like cars for
commercial purposes or bikes etc have to have an improvement in efficiency without
increasing the cost to make profit and also to abide by the regulation norms. This paper also
throws light upon how Achates Power, a commercial Opp 2 piston stroke engine
manufacturing company came up with the idea of clean, efficient, less expensive opposed 2
piston stroke engine with CAD software and state of the art engineering practices. This was
the part of the paper concerned with our field of study.
The third paper tells us how the product development by Achates Power reduced the number
of parts and cost when compared to the conventional 4 stroke engine. The oil consumption
over majority operation range of the engine was found to be very less. The improved engine
also demonstrated a lesser fuel consumption compared to the 2010 medium duty diesel
engines for similar emission levels.
This paper gives the results of Opposed Piston Engine and their transient capabilities. The
nitrous oxide and soot emissions can be controlled with minimum torque lag. The exhaust
temperature can also be managed by the Engine. The air system control flexibility and robust
combustion system developed by the company has the potential to achieve high exhaust gas
temperature for a diesel engine at idle like speeds and loads
The main technical characteristics of engine models are given. It is shown that computer
modelling makes it possible to scale the technology for creating two-stroke engines with
opposite pistons in a wide power range. The article analyses the research activities of the
Achates Power company, which is engaged in the design and creation of two-stroke engines
with opposite pistons. A step-by-step technology for creating engines is presented.
