1) The document describes an experiment to determine the unknown capacitance of a capacitor using De Sauty's Modified Bridge. 2) Key components of the circuit include a standard variable capacitor C1, the unknown capacitor C2, and resistances R1-R4 used to balance the bridge. 3) The relationship determined is C2/C1 = (R1+r1)/(R2+r2), where r1 and r2 are the internal resistances of C1 and C2. This allows calculating C2 if C1 and the resistances are known.

EXPERIMENT - 5
OBJECTIVE - To determine the unknown capacitance of a capacitor using De
Sauty's Modified Bridge.
CIRCUIT DIAGRAM-

Fig.(1) Circuit diagram for measurement of capacitance by De Sauty's Modified

Bridge
THEORY -
In this bridge, a capacitance is measured with a standard variable capacitance. The
connection is shown in the figure.
This bridge is a modification of De Sauty's bridge.
C 1 = A standard capacitor.
C2 = A capacitor whose capacitance has to be measured.
r1,r2 = Representing losses of their corresponding capacitors.
R4,R3 = Non-inductive resistances.
R1,R2 = They are connected in series with C1 and C2 respectively.
At balance condition,
(R1+r1+1/jωC1)⋅R4 = (R2+r2+1/jωC2)⋅R3
(r1+R1)⋅R4+R4/jωC1 = (r2+R2)⋅R3+R3/jωC2
Equating both the real and imaginary parts and separate them,
R4/R3 = (R2+r2)/(R1+r1)
C2 = (R3/R4)⋅C1
C2 = [(R1+r1)/(R2+r2)]C1
C2/C1 = (R1+r1)/(R2+r2) = R3/R4 ...........eq.(1)
The balance may be obtained by variation of resistances R1, R2, R3 and R4.
PHASOR DIAGRAM -

Fig. (2) Phasor diagram for measurement of capacitance by De Sauty's Modified

Bridge
The angles δ1 and δ2 are the phase angles of C1 and C2 respectively. The dissipation
factors for corresponding capacitors are
D1 = tan(δ1) = ωC1r1 and D2 = tan(δ2) = ωC2r2
From the eq.(1),
C2/C1 = (R1 + r1)/(R2 + r2)
C2R2 + C2r2 = C1R1 + C1r1
Multiplying both sides by ω,
ωC2R2 + ωC2r2 = ωC1R1 + ωC1r1
D2−D1 = ω⋅C2⋅(R1⋅R4/R3−R2)
Therefore, if the dissipation factor of one of the capacitors is known, the
dissipation factor for the other can be determined .
PROCEDURE -
1. Set the voltage (V=3V) and Frequency (50Hz) and set the unknown
capacitance value from 'Set Capacitor Value' tab by clicking on 'Set' button.
2. Then switch on the supply to get millivoltmeter deflection.
3. Now vary the values of R1, R2, R3, R4 and C1 from the control box below or
directly put the values in the boxes of respective elements.
4. Observe the millivoltmeter pointer to achieve "NULL".
5. If "NULL" is achieved, switch to 'Measure Capacitor Value' tab and click on
'Simulate'. Observe calculated values of unknown capacitance (C2) and
unknown internal resistance (r2) of the capacitor. Also observe the
Dissipation factor of the unknown capacitor, which is defined as w⋅C⋅r.
where, w=2⋅π⋅f.
Range of C1=100pF to 11.111uF (in steps of 100 pF).
Range of R1, R2, R3 and R4= 1 Ω to 11111110 Ω (in steps of 1 Ω)
OBSERVATION TABLE -
S. No. R1 R2 (ohm) R3 R4 C1 r2 C2
(ohm) (ohm) (ohm) (µF)
(µF) (Ohm)
1 7595907 7595899 1 1 0.053 13 0.053
2 1 1 1 1 0.053 5 0.053
3 7042708 7942700 1 1 0.053 12 0.053

CALCULATION -
C2(mean) = (0.053 + 0.053 + 0.053)/3 = 0.053 µF
r2(mean) = (13+5+12)/3 = 10 ohm
RESULTS -
C2(standard) = 0.052 µF
C2(calculated) = 0.053 µF
r2(calculated) = 10 ohm
