PG NO 79 SHORT ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS

1.What is the importance of soil? Why is it considered an indispensable

part of our life?

Ans. Soil is one of the most important natural resources. It is the

uppermost layer of earth’s crust which is blackish-brown in colour. Major
functions of the soil are:

• It supports plant growth by holding the roots firmly and supplying

water and nutrients to the plants.
• It acts as a natural habitat for many organisms like earthworm, fungi,
bacteria, ants, etc.
• It is also essential for agriculture which provides us food, clothing
and shelter for all.
• It supplies water and nutrients to plants.

Therefore, we can say that the soil is inseparable part of our life.

2. What is the role of A-horizon?

Ans.The topmost layer is dark in color, and contains the remains of dead
plants and animals. This rotting matter is called humus.
This layer of soil is called topsoil or A-horizon.
It is made up of humus and minerals, and makes the soil fertile.
It is soft and porous, and can retain more water than the other layers.
Many tiny organisms, such as beetles, worms and rodents, live in the
topsoil. The roots of small plants do not go down very deep and can be
found in the topsoil.
PG NO 82 LONG ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS

1.(b) Different types of crops are grown in different types of soils. Justify
with suitable examples.
Ans. Clayey and loamy soils are both suitable for growing cereals like
wheat, and gram. Such soils are good at retaining water. For paddy,
soils rich in clay and organic matter and having a good capacity to retain
water are ideal. For lentils (masoor) and other pulses, loamy soils, which
drain water easily, are required. For cotton, sandy- loam or loam, which
drain water easily and can hold plenty of air, are more suitable.

2. State the various causes of soil erosion and their effects on

vegetation.

Ans.The removal of the fertile top layers of soil by running water or wind
is termed as soil erosion.

The main causes of soil erosion are:

1. Deforestation: Once trees are felled, the soil is left loose and can be
removed easily by running water or wind.
2. Overgrazing: The soil is then poorly bound and can be removed by
wind or water.
3. Floods and heavy rains: Floods and heavy rains wash away large
amounts of soil , particularly when there are no trees and the land is
barren.
4. Poor farming practises: Improper farming on hill sides makes soil
more vulnerable to erosion by wind or water.

Effects of soil erosion:

a) The topsoil is removed leaving the soil infertile.

b) As the land is not fertile, it can no longer support agriculture
resulting in the shortage of food grains.
c) It can cause floods as the rainwater is not stopped by the roots of
trees or plants near the river banks.

SHORT ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS

2. How is loamy soil very useful for the crops?

Ans. Loamy soil is best for growing crops because the contents
present in this soil like silt, sand and clay provide a better
characteristics. Water and minerals can easily penetrate in the soil due
to particle space between them.

PG NO 84 LONG ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS

1. Anjali took a handful of garden soil and put it in a glass. She then
added some water into it and mixed it well. Afterwards she allowed
it to settle. In what order, the soil components will get arranged in
this glass?
Draw the different layers of soil formed and also label them.
Ans.
The soil particles will get arranged in the following order:

Gravel, sand, clay, water, humus

(a) Gravel is the heaviest rock material.

(b) Humus is the lightest soil component which floats on the water
surface.
(c) The soil component forms various layer one above the other
according to the size of soil particle.
