Task 3
COMPUTER DESCRIPTION OF THE FUNCTIONS OF EACH COMPONENT
COMPONENT
MOTHER BOARD  The motherboard serves as a single platform to connect all of the parts
of a computer together.
 It connects the CPU, memory, hard drives, optical drives, video card,
sound card, and other ports and expansion cards directly or via cables.
 It can be considered as the backbone of a computer.
CPU  CPU is considered as the brain of the computer.
 CPU performs all types of data processing operations.
 It stores data, intermediate results, and instructions (program).
 It controls the operation of all parts of the computer.
RAM  Random Access Memory (RAM) is one of the most important
components in determining your system's performance.
 RAM gives applications a place to store and access data on a short-term
basis. It stores the information your computer is actively using so that it
can be accessed quickly.
Explain what “Volatile” means:
Volatile memory, in contrast to non-volatile memory, is computer
memory that requires power to maintain the stored information; it
retains its contents while powered on but when the power is interrupted,
the stored data is quickly lost.
ROM  Read-only memory (ROM) is a type of storage medium that
permanently stores data on personal computers (PCs) and other
electronic devices.
 It contains the programming needed to start a PC, which is essential for
boot-up; it performs major input/output tasks and holds programs or
software instructions.
Explain what “Non-Volatile” means:
Non-volatile memory (NVM) or non-volatile storage is a type of computer
memory that can retain stored information even after power is removed.
In contrast, volatile memory needs constant power in order to retain data.
STORAGE  A storage device is a piece of computer hardware used for saving,
DEVICES carrying and pulling out data. It can keep and retain information short-
term or long-term.
GRAPHICS CARD  A video card (also called a graphics card, display card, graphics adapter,
or display adapter) is an expansion card which generates a feed of
output images to a display device (such as a computer monitor).
PERIPHERALS A peripheral device is generally defined as any auxiliary device such as a
computer mouse or keyboard, that connects to and works with the
computer in some way. Other examples of peripherals are expansion cards,
graphics cards, image scanners, tape drives, microphones, loudspeakers,
webcams, and digital cameras.
