Students learn to work together and see the results of their
hard work and efforts. Their current project is remodeling
Kobe Court, a recreational area within the campus
named after Kobe, the school’s long-time mascot and
tortoise-in-residence!

Well Informed Counselors

The Burbank Adult School (BAS)
is a member of the Los Angeles
Regional Adult Education Consortium
(LARAEC). As a part of the LARAEC
Regional Plan for 2016-17 the BAS
counselors will be meeting individually
Emilio Urioste with students to draft an Individual
Director Learning Plan (ILP). The purpose of
the ILP is to better serve the academic
and career goals of students and to be able to
generate a road map towards fulfilling those goals.
BAS counselors will thus assist students who seek to colleges in the surrounding area. BAS counselors meet
earn a high school diploma or an equivalency. Additionally, each month with the community colleges regarding
counselors are well versed about the Career Technical programs and services provided so that they are current
Education programs offered at BAS and at the community and well informed.

Expanding and Evolving

The Independent Learning Academy (ILA) is now in
its third year of operation and has an enrollment of 30
students. The ILA is expanding and evolving to better
meet the needs of the students in the Burbank Unified
School District (BUSD). This year we began to admit
seventh- and eighth-grade students. The admission of
these students is on a case-by-case basis to determine if
independent learning best suits the needs of the student.
Additionally, we have students who are dual-enrolled at
the ILA and at their original high school of residence.
These dual-enrollments, which must be approved by
the District’s Instructional Services Department, are
primarily focused on allowing ILA students to access
programs not offered at the ILA, such as visual and

Professional Development Activities

The Horace Mann Children’s Center enjoyed a great
start to the school year. Teachers and administration
have been busy preparing for the many wonderful
activities and events we have planned. Our staff
members are participating in professional development
activities to improve the instructional opportunities of
all students. Horace Mann teachers work to provide our
students with engaging and developmentally appropriate
learning experiences that will promote their growth and
development.
This year the goal is to improve student learning.
With effective curriculum planning all children will be
offered learning opportunities that are attuned to their
developing abilities while connecting experiences to
their home and community. Our teachers focus on the
development of the whole child.
