General Physics 2

Performance Task
(3rd Quarter)

PT 1 – ELECTROSCOPE
Instruction: Create your DIY electroscope.
Materials: from the video you can see the materials used (better watch the video first)
electrical wire (spare or used) or (12 or 14 Gauge copper wire)
glass jar, plastic cup, aluminum foil, glue gun, pen, scissor, pliers
woolen sock or any woolen cloth these two objects will be used to test your electroscope
PVC pipe if working properly (see video)

Procedure: open this link below to see on how to make an electroscope: https://youtu.be/61gr7vAkVAA

Note:
You have the option to create your own DIY
Finished Product
Electroscope and use different materials, as
long as it is working properly when applied.

From the video:

 the author demonstrate on how to use the electroscope and static electricity
 the author displays the type of materials used and how to charge an object
(see Triboelectric Series in module 1)
 the author used the following objects:
woolen sock – made of wool
PVC pipe - made of polyvinyl chloride
1) after rubbing these two materials; (charging by FRICTION METHOD)
woolen sock - losses electron (become positively charged)
PVC pipe - gain electron (become negatively charged)

note: only electrons transfer from one object to another object, protons remain at the nucleus of the atom
of that specific object
2) putting the PVC pipe near the electrical wire of the electroscope (charging by INDUCTION METHOD)

Static Electricity effect:

 the foils inside the bottle repelled (both foils become positively charged)
 this shows that the PVC pipe is charged (after rubbing with woolen sock)
 electrical wire is experiencing POLARIZATION
3) putting the PVC pipe near the soda can (INDUCTION METHOD)
 the can is also moving following the direction of the PVC pipe
 this shows that the PVC pipe is charged, and the can is experiencing POLARIZATION
Kindly take a picture of your created electroscope, then send to my messenger account. Note that this is your
PT 1 in Physics 2, so this will be graded.
Please keep it. You will use your electroscope on your Worksheet 1 activity.
