A Glimmer of love

(Persuasive Essay)

The very first factor is poverty. Since corruption is endemic in the Philippine political
system, this largely prevents progress and social growth. Wealth and power are concentrated
among prominent families, leaving the poor very little chance to improve themselves.

The second factor is the lack of education. There is a huge inequality among different
social groups in educational achievement. The well-heeled have better access to education than
the indigent. Although the Department of Education’s mission is to provide quality basic
education that is fairly accessible to all, the rate of out-of-school children and youth in the
Philippines is still growing. In fact, the Department of Education stated that this rate would reach
four million in number this 2021 due to the pandemic. And since many Filipinos live below the
poverty line, many of us find it hard to be successful in life, hence, contribute greatly to the
orphan crisis in the Philippines.

Since there is lack of education due to poverty, we will no longer be surprised that the
third factor is teenage pregnancy. According to the Philippine Statistical Authority, this affects
around 6% of Filipinas. An approximately 538 babies are born to teenage Filipina mothers every
single day, which means almost 200,000 teenagers get pregnant every year, and to fan the
flames, there are about 40 births each year by girls who have not reached the age of 13! And
since they are too young, most of them are not at all prepared for motherhood, and just decide
to give up the baby.

These three factors often give birth to orphans.

The population of the Philippines is more than 109 million, and there are only 139
Filipino orphans being adopted every year. That is only 0.0000695% of the orphan population
that finds a forever-home each year. We need to do something about this! No matter how
average our way of living is. It is high time for us to be part of something bigger than ourselves.
Number of orphans? 200,000,000. Number of caring individuals it takes to change the life of an
orphan? Just one! Visit www.orphansofthephilippines.com and rescue and transform the life of
an orphan. While all of us are facing a bleak and uncertain future, may the many children of the
Philippines give us many reasons to hope and to celebrate every day.

Has the Covid-19 pandemic made us, Filipinos, more or less giving? Has it changed the way we
help one another? While you’d expect opulent donors to give more during this crisis, you
wouldn’t necessarily expect similar action from average people hurting from an economic
depression. Does this mean that they have nothing to give, or just thinking that this pandemic
has given them the license not to give? As they say, a little goes a long way. I strongly believe
that we all have something to offer. Sure, according to Albert and Ramon, 20% of the population
only had a share of 4.45% of the national income. This shows that the distribution of wealth is
uneven in the Philippines, therefore, there are many average people, but what about the less
fortunate? The poorest of the poor? The orphans? What about these children who were
abandoned by their parents? As of today, the number of orphans in the Philippines is now
estimated to be over 2,000,000! How did this happen? There are three factors that will serve as
key to understanding this situation.
