Book Review of “THE GIVER”

Book Review: The Giver

Author: Lois Lowry
Genre: Children's Fiction
Winner Of Newbery Medal

“The Giver” is written by American writer Lois Lowry. She is one of the
world's most beloved and versatile authors for children and young
adults. She is the author of more than forty books. She has sold millions
of books worldwide and twice received the prestigious Newbery Medal,
for “Number the stars and The Giver”. “The Giver” is possibly the most
alarming story of Lois Lowry. In this novel, Jonas, the hero of The
Giver, lives a highly ordered life as a member of a group who describes
themselves as “the community”. Basically, this book is a children's
fiction book with a tragic story. The genre of this book is novel.

The leading character of this book is a 12-year-old boy named Jonas

who experiences shocking truths, revelations, and hidden philosophies
about the world around him as he navigates what was designed to serve
as a “utopian” society. While society has eliminated any sort of
emotional depth, color, memory, and individuality. At the age of 12,
children are assigned their jobs, which they will train for and do for the
rest of their lives. Everything is chosen; from your parents to your
partner.

Jonas stands apart from the community when he was chosen to become
the new "Memory Keeper". Jonas quickly learns, after being selected to
inherit the position as receiver of memory. The people of the community
have not known the colours, music and emotions.
We see the unique and profound relationship between The Giver and
Jonas. Eventually, Jonas happens to get a chance to experience all the
memories and feelings that none of the members of his community has
ever experienced. Society has been kept free of all the bad elements of
life because for as long as it has been formed, there has been a person
who holds all the bad and good memories of the past within him. This is
both good and bad for the people because, although they are protected
from bad aspects, they are also unaware of the wonderful aspects of life.

This novel is about the relationship between pain and pleasure, the
importance of an individual, freedom to choose what you want to be ,
rules and control, rituals and memory. Characters like Jonas, Nurturer,
Memory Giver, and Gabriel clearly show that everyone is fighting their
own battles.
Sometimes we don't know the purpose of our life and other times try to
convince people about their purposes. The story of different characters
depicts the different versions of life.

This novel contains every single thing that a book should have. This is a
great book, thoroughly emotional and downright deep and touching. This
novel completely deserves the title of being a classic. It makes you
think, and inspires a lot of questions on the world around us. Ultimately
the book leaves you with so many thoughts and questions.

I really like this book and enjoyed the dystopian society as well as the
main character, Jonas. I think this book is amazing. It teaches readers
about many things that are happening in our real life. Overall, This book
is written so well. All the feelings of the characters are deeply shown
and you can actually feel them. I recommend this book to everyone.
Also, I would rate this book 8 out of 10.
