SAHARA DESERT

DEFINITION

A desert is a large area of extremely dry land with sparse vegetation. It is

one of the Earth’s major types of ecosystems and is a very hostile
environment for plants and animals.

STRUCTURE AND CHARACTERISTICS

Bordered in the west by the

Atlantic Ocean
The north by the Atlas Mountains
and Mediterranean Sea
The east by the Red Sea
The south by Sahel
Shallow, inundated basins
Large Oasis depressions
Extensive gravel-covered plains
Rock-strewn plateaus
Abrupt mountains
Covered with sand sheets, dunes,
and sand seas

(dust storms)

DISTRUBITION

The Sahara desert is located in the Northern extends across the northern
part of Africa. The coordinates are 23.4162° N, 25.6628° E. The subtropical
desert biome can be found in 33% or one third of the planet Earth's total
landmass.

PRODUCTIVITY AND BIODIVERSITY

Deserts are areas with very low available water. The absence of water will
prevent most plants from surviving hence, productivity is negligible. It is also
not a very biodiverse biome, also due to the fact that there’s very low water
availability and the sun is scorching hot, deeming the lands uninhabitable to
most plants and animals.
