LEVELS OF SALINITY

Prepared by Anoop Randhawa

THE HIGHEST-SALINITY BODIES OF WATER

(Descending Order)

Don Juan Pond

Location: McMurdo Dry Valleys in Antarctica
44% salinity
Its salinity level allows it to remain liquid even at temperatures below
-50℃
It is a closed basin (no water flowing in or out)
So, water can either freeze or evaporate
Salinity level makes it difficult for water to freeze, so water
evaporates - leaving the salt behind with some water
This is how it gets so concentrated

Lake Retba

Located near the village of Sangalkam (Senegal)

Also known as Pink Lake
40% salinity (one of the most salty lakes in the world)
Lake Retba was originally a freshwater lake
But in 1980s, a drought caused a change in the
composition of the water

Lake Vanda

Location: McMurdo Dry Valleys in Antarctica

35% salinity (approx.)
More saline than the Dead Sea
Its bottom waters remain stratified all year‐round
because of a strong salinity‐driven density gradient

THE LOWEST-SALINITY BODIES OF WATER

(Ascending Order)
“Chilika Lake - The Largest Brackish Water Lake In Asia.” Odisha Rajya, 16 Aug. 2020, www.odisharajya.com/tourism/chilika-lake-the-queen-of-natural-beauty/.
Chilika Lake

Location: Odisha, India (eastern)

It is connected to the Bay of Bengal through a
narrow mouth
A shallow brackish-water lake
0.013–3.173% salinity
This is due to the weak circulation of the water
and poor tidal influx

Baltic Sea

It is enclosed by the Scandinavian Peninsula, the

mainland of Northern Europe, Eastern Europe and
Central Europe, and the Danish islands
1.0% salinity (even less in some parts)
This is mainly due to the colder water and huge
amount of freshwater added from hundreds of rivers
Its salinity is much lower than that of ocean water

Caspian Sea
[email protected]. “The Caspian Sea Is a One of the Largest...” The Consulate in Gothenburg of the Republic of Kazakhstan, 14 Jan. 2020, www.kzconsulate.se/the-caspian-sea-is-a-one-of-the-largest/.

It is located at the junction of Europe and Asia

The Caucasus Mountains to the west and the
steppes of Central Asia to the east
Bordered by Russia to the northwest,
Azerbaijan to the west, Iran to the south,
Turkmenistan to the southeast and Kazakhstan
to the northeast
The Earth's largest inland body of water
1.25% salinity (approx.)
This is due to the amount of freshwater added

(more than 130 rivers flow into the Caspian Sea)
