I. Introduction

- Author

Douglas McGregor (1906-1964) pursued an academic career mainly teaching at

Harvard Universit, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Antioch College,
becoming the first Sloan Research Professor at MIT. Although he died early, he wrote
only a few publications, but they have had a huge impact. His writings have had a lot of
influence on current learning and practice, agreeing that much of modern management
thinking goes back to McGregor, especially his impact on leadership. (McGregor,1906)

- Theory X and Theory Y

 Theory X talks about people who don't want to work, avoid work. People need to
have hard measures to work. People like to be oriented, and avoid responsibility.
(McGregor,1906)

 Theory y is to say that people do not naturally hate work, just because they are not
motivated to do it. People are oriented to the results they are committed to. People
are committed to making efforts with ability. their own in return for a worthy
reward. Humans always seek and accept responsibilities if it's comfortable for
them. Humans are brave, but most of them don't have the conditions to prove their
strength. mine. (McGregor,1906)

II. Discuss and analyze practical experience

In the work Theory X management style has an important place in large-scale

production activities and unskilled production jobs. Besides that, many principles of
Theory Y are widely applied. by the kinds of organizations that value and encourage
participation. Theory Y management style is suitable for knowledge work and
professional services. Professional services organizations naturally develop Theory Y
according to the nature of their work; Even highly structured knowledge work, such as
call center operations, can benefit from its principles to encourage knowledge sharing and
continuous improvement.( Nhat.T.P,2021)

When I had just entered university, besides studying, I was looking for part-time
jobs. At that time, I found a job as an employee of a coffee shop. Since I am a newbie, the
work is not familiar to me, I do it very slowly and not quickly. The manager here is really
hard on new employees like us. He even threatened to deduct my salary if I kept being
lazy. Always supervise me whenever I make coffee for guests or bring coffee out to serve
customers. Actually, we are not used to work, not lazy. If he followed the theories of
3
management, he must have applied Theory X, which says that people don't like to work,
avoid responsibility and need guidance. Must be controlled, coerced and threatened to
work. Need to be supervised at every step. Needs to be manipulated to produce results;
otherwise, they have no ambition or motivation to work.

In my opinion, in the process of managing employees, the other manager was too
strict and only applied theory X to management, so it would cause great pressure on
employees. If the pressure is too great, employees will no longer be motivated to work
and will not complete their jobs well. Specifically, here is that if I put too much pressure
on me, I will not be able to fully focus on making coffee or serving the best customers so
I may end up quitting my job. If that's the case, the coffee shop has to find new
employees and start training again, which a new person cannot master. That affects
customers, they will give bad reviews about the cafe. Leads to an impact on the
restaurant's revenue.

Instead of just applying theory X, I think management should apply theory Y to

create the best working environment for employees as well as being effective for their
work. Theory Y a management style with little participatory. It assumes that employees
are happy to work, motivated and creative, and enjoy working with greater responsibility.
This type of management tends to be more widely adopted. In type Y organizations,
people at the lower levels are involved in decision making and more responsible.

From that management lesson learned for me is to use both Theory X and Theory
Y because using only One theory will not work because using only Theory X will either
of the things I mentioned above or it only works when applied to non-creative, repetitive,
or factory jobs. If only using theory Y will fail if employees have low intellectual level.
Many companies have failed to apply Theory Y management style because of the loose
management. Thus, depending on the workplace, the manager will apply the theory of X
and Y accordingly. But with increasingly modern life, people every day learn more for
themselves, but with new knowledge and understanding of everything, everyone wants to
work in a comfortable environment that does not carry too much pressure and challenges.
extreme slot. Combine the two for the best benefit.
