I. Mini Lesson, DAY 1
Natural sciences
Natural sciences are defined as disciplines that deal only with
natural events using scientific methods. These disciplines always
exclude non–natural events from their considerations.
Historically, the natural sciences arose out of mystical
origins. Early investigators focused on various facets of “nature”
and, in doing so, developed what came to be known as scientific
methods. The phrase natural science initially referred to the
various subject matters to which such attentions were being
directed.
Humanities
1
Scholars in the humanities are "humanity scholars" or humanists.
The term "humanist" also describes the philosophical position of
humanism, which some "anti-humanist" scholars in the
humanities reject. The Renaissance scholars and artists were
also called humanists. Some secondary schools offer humanities
classes usually consisting of literature, global studies and art.
2
History of Social Sciences
The origins of social sciences can be traced back to the
ancient Greeks. The lives they led, and their early studies
into human nature, the state, and mortality, helped to shape
Western civilization.
3
These are the intellectuals who laid the foundations
for the study of social sciences in the Western
World.
4
There are 11 social science
disciplines, these are the following:
1. Anthropology
2. Communication Studies
3. Economics
4. Education
5. Geography
6. History
7. Law
8. Linguistics
9. Political Science
10. Psychology
11. Sociology
5
There are two kinds of Anthropology.
1. Physical Anthropology
2. Cultural Anthropology
6
The third discipline is Economics.
Economics is a social science that seeks to
analyze and describe the production,
distribution, and consumption of wealth. The
word "economics" is from the Ancient Greek
οἶκος oikos, "family, household, estate", and
νόμος nomos, "custom, law", and hence
means "household management" or
"management of the state".
7
The fourth Social Science discipline is Education.
Education encompasses teaching and learning specific skills, and
also something less tangible but more profound. It is the imparting
of knowledge, positive judgement and well-developed wisdom.
Education has as one of its fundamental aspects the imparting of
culture from generation to generation. To educate means 'to draw
out', from the Latin educare, or to facilitate the realization of an
individual's potential and talents.
8
The sixth social science discipline is History.
History is the continuous, systematic narrative and research
into past human events as interpreted through
historiographical paradigms or theories.
9
The 8th discipline of social science is
Linguistics. Linguistics investigates the
cognitive and social aspects of human
language.
10
The 10th discipline of social science is Psychology.
Psychology is an academic and applied field
involving the study of behaviour and mental
processes. Psychology also refers to the application
of such knowledge to various spheres of human
activity, including problems of individuals' daily lives
and the treatment of mental illness.
