I. Mini Lesson, DAY 1

Natural sciences
Natural sciences are defined as disciplines that deal only with
natural events using scientific methods. These disciplines always
exclude non–natural events from their considerations.
Historically, the natural sciences arose out of mystical
origins. Early investigators focused on various facets of “nature”
and, in doing so, developed what came to be known as scientific
methods. The phrase natural science initially referred to the
various subject matters to which such attentions were being
directed.

The historical element as distinguished from the mainly

empirical approaches of the natural sciences, yet, unlike the
sciences, it has no central discipline. The humanities include the
study of ancient and modern languages, literature, philosophy,
history, archaeology, anthropology, human geography, law,
politics, religion, and art.

Humanities

Humanities are academic disciplines that

study the aspects of human society and culture. In
the Renaissance, the term contrasted with divinity
and referred to what is now called classics, the
main area of secular study in universities at the
time.

The humanities use methods that are

primarily critical, or speculative, and have a
significant historical element as distinguished from
the mainly empirical approaches of the natural
sciences, yet, unlike the sciences, it has no central
discipline. The humanities include the study of
ancient and modern languages, literature,
philosophy, history, archaeology, anthropology,
human geography, law, politics, religion, and art.

1
Scholars in the humanities are "humanity scholars" or humanists.
The term "humanist" also describes the philosophical position of
humanism, which some "anti-humanist" scholars in the
humanities reject. The Renaissance scholars and artists were
also called humanists. Some secondary schools offer humanities
classes usually consisting of literature, global studies and art.

Humanities is concerned with the study

of human society and culture. It is very
important for us individuals to know this
because we will be dealing with
everyone in the society and in our
community. Through this, we will know
our differences specially in our culture
and where we came from. We need to
respect our differences to achieve
peace and harmony. That is part of
humanities and it is very important.

Social Science is a discipline concerned with the systematic

study of social phenomena. Basically, the term “social science” is
defined as the study of human society; that particular area of
study that relates to human behavior and society. In a broader
sense, it is a branch of science that deals with the institutions,
the functioning of human society, and with the interpersonal
relationships of dealing with a particular phase or aspect of
human society as socio-cultural aspects of human behavior.

2
History of Social Sciences
The origins of social sciences can be traced back to the
ancient Greeks. The lives they led, and their early studies
into human nature, the state, and mortality, helped to shape
Western civilization.

The beginning of the social sciences in the 18th

century is reflected in the grand encyclopedia of
Diderot, with articles from Jean-Jacques
Rousseau and other pioneers. The growth of the
social sciences is also reflected in other
specialized encyclopedias. The modern period
saw "social science" first used as a distinct
conceptual field. Social science was influenced
by positivism, focusing on knowledge based on
actual positive sense experience and avoiding
the negative; metaphysical speculation was
avoided. Auguste Comte used the term "science
sociale" to describe the field, taken from the
ideas of Charles Fourier; Comte also referred to
the field as social physics. Social science as an
academic field of study developed out of the
Age of Enlightenment (or the Age of Reason),
which flourished through much of the 18th
century in Europe.

3
These are the intellectuals who laid the foundations
for the study of social sciences in the Western
World.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau Denis Diderot

Adam Smith Immanuel Kant

Voltaire David Hume

4
There are 11 social science
disciplines, these are the following:
1. Anthropology
2. Communication Studies
3. Economics
4. Education
5. Geography
6. History
7. Law
8. Linguistics
9. Political Science
10. Psychology
11. Sociology

The first discipline of Social Science is Anthropology.

Anthropology is the holistic "science of man", a science of the

totality of human existence. The discipline deals with the
integration of different aspects of the social sciences, human
picture shown below is an example of Anthropology. This
picture is showing us the changes that the human body has
undergo as time passes and as well as their behavior. Through
time, our body evolved and as well as our mental capabilities.

5
There are two kinds of Anthropology.
1. Physical Anthropology
2. Cultural Anthropology

The second discipline of Social Science is

Communication Studies. Communication studies deals
with processes of human communication, commonly
defined as the sharing of symbols to create meaning.
Communication studies also examines how messages
are interpreted through the political, cultural, economic,
and social dimensions of their contexts.

6
The third discipline is Economics.
Economics is a social science that seeks to
analyze and describe the production,
distribution, and consumption of wealth. The
word "economics" is from the Ancient Greek
οἶκος oikos, "family, household, estate", and
νόμος nomos, "custom, law", and hence
means "household management" or
"management of the state".

Economics has two broad branches:

1. Microeconomics - where the unit of analysis is

the individual agent, such as a household or firm.

2. Macroeconomics - where the unit of analysis

is an economy as a whole.

Based on the picture, it simply tells us that Macro

Economics is the consumption, distribution and
production of resources with in a nation, or country while
Micro Economics is the consumption, distribution and
production of resources within a household or a company.

7
The fourth Social Science discipline is Education.
Education encompasses teaching and learning specific skills, and
also something less tangible but more profound. It is the imparting
of knowledge, positive judgement and well-developed wisdom.
Education has as one of its fundamental aspects the imparting of
culture from generation to generation. To educate means 'to draw
out', from the Latin educare, or to facilitate the realization of an
individual's potential and talents.

The fifth Social science discipline is

Geography.

Geography as a discipline can be split

broadly into two main sub fields:
1.Human geography – deals with how
human activity affects or is influenced by
earth’s surface.
2.Physical geography- examines phenomena
related to the measurement of earth.
The former focuses largely on the built
environment and how space is created,
viewed and managed by humans as well as
the influence humans have on the space
they occupy.

8
The sixth social science discipline is History.
History is the continuous, systematic narrative and research
into past human events as interpreted through
historiographical paradigms or theories.

History has a base in both the social sciences and the

humanities. The historical method comprises the techniques
and guidelines by which historians use primary sources and
other evidence to research and then to write history.

The Social Science History

Association, formed in 1976,
brings together scholars from
numerous disciplines interested in
social history.
In Philippine History. The
Philippines were claimed in the
name of Spain in 1521 by
Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese
explorer sailing for Spain, who
named the islands after King Philip
II of Spain. They were then called
Las Felipinas.

The seventh discipline of Social Science is Law.

The social science of law, jurisprudence, in common
parlance, means a rule that (unlike a rule of ethics) is
capable of enforcement through institutions. However, many
laws are based on norms accepted by a community and
thus have an ethical foundation.

9
The 8th discipline of social science is
Linguistics. Linguistics investigates the
cognitive and social aspects of human
language.

The field is divided into areas that focus

on aspects of the linguistic signal:

1. Syntax (the study of the rules that

govern the structure of sentences)

2. Semantics (the study of meaning),

morphology (the study of the structure of
words)

3. Phonetics (the study of speech

sounds)

4. Phonology (the study of the abstract

sound system of a particular language).

The 9th Social Science is Political Science. Political

science is an academic and research discipline that deals
with the theory and practice of politics and the description
and analysis of political systems and political behavior.
Political science also studies power in international
relations and the theory of great powers and superpowers.

10
The 10th discipline of social science is Psychology.
Psychology is an academic and applied field
involving the study of behaviour and mental
processes. Psychology also refers to the application
of such knowledge to various spheres of human
activity, including problems of individuals' daily lives
and the treatment of mental illness.

The 11th discipline of social science is

Sociology.
Sociology is the systematic study of society,
individuals' relationship to their societies, the
consequences of difference, and other aspects
of human social action.[31] The meaning of the
word comes from the suffix "-logy", which means
"study of", derived from Ancient Greek, and the
stem "soci-", which is from the Latin word
socius, meaning "companion", or society in
general.
Auguste Comte (1798–1857) regarded as the
"Father of Sociology" coined the term,
Sociology, as a way to apply natural science
principles and techniques to the social world in
1838.
